  • Online Security: Ensuring your security and safety on webpages you visit

Online Security: Ensuring your security and safety on webpages you visit

Have you ever wondered why a lock sign appears on some web pages? Also if you pay more attention to the URL (Uniform Resource Locator) of a website, you might have come across an extra “s” after the “http”. So, for instance, you see https://www.mfidie.com instead of the normal http://www.mfidie.com. This is widely and mostly seen on sites that require sensitive information from its users.

What does the “s” represent? How does it work? How do you get it on your webpage?

Worry no more. This short write up seeks to answer the questions above. Without halting my typing let’s get into it.

The additional “s” simply means that the website is secured and any data that is passed on it is encrypted on the web from the server side. An unsecured webpage is equivalent to non-encrypted data or plain-text sent back and forth. Plain-text data opens up for interceptions, eavesdropping and even stealing from unauthorized persons. The technology that powers this is called SSL, which stands for Secure Sockets Layer.

SSL is a security protocol for creating a secure link between a web server and a web browser. This link ensures that all data passing through is private and remains private. This is done in that websites which has obtained an SSL certificate from reseller of trusted Certified Authorities or directly from CA (Certificate Authority). Browsers, Operating Systems and Mobile Devices also maintain a list of CA (Certified Authority) root certificates.

The certificate uses public key cryptography and this makes use of two randomly generate keys – Public and Private to lock and unlock information on both ends of the communication. Some of these trusted Certified Authorities include Comodo, GlobalSign, GoDaddy, DigiCert and many others.

Data like bank transaction or high-level information is encrypted, making it difficult for hackers who prey on web servers to get anything useful from your inputs. You are rest assured that hitting “submit” on a website is safe.

Now here are a few tips to know if the website you are visiting is secure or otherwise.

    • Within the URL of your browser you will see https:// instead of http://
    • You will also notice a padlock icon and some browsers write “Secure” in addition. This can be found on the left or right side of the URL bar.
    • Some websites also go an extra mile to add a badge to the webpage to indicate a secure connection.

In addition, some websites would have secured their webpages but the certificate might be expired. Therefore, when you realize that a webpage is requiring too many information you can go further to check the status of their certificate.

This differs from browser to browser. A simple process for Google Chrome is to go the developer tools and navigate to security and holla you will see if the certificate is valid or expired. Let’s take extra precautions on the internet and happy browser to you.

  • Cancer Alert? Check Out The Radiation Coming From your Android Device

Cancer Alert? Check Out The Radiation Coming From your Android Device

Do you think Smartphones can cause cancer? Well, although phone do emit radiations because of the radio waves, these radiations are not strong enough to cause a change in DNA, according to research that has been carried out.

    Well, don’t rejoice yet.

So far, no direct link has been established between cancer and smartphones. However, the fact still remains that smartphones are carcinogenic (having the potential to cause cancer). It’s just that radiation from them is not strong enough to fry DNA.

The key question, however, now becomes just how strong is the radiation coming from your phone. Every electronic device emits a small amount of non-ionizing radiation measuring around few REMS and the amount absorbed by the body between a specific time period is known as SAR value i.e Specific absorption rate (SAR). In simple words, if you want to know how much radiation your phone is putting out, you need to figure out its SAR value.

How to check your phone’s Radiation (SAR value)?

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the US has set a SAR level of 1.6 W/Kg for phones. This means phone below 1.6W/kg is considered good.

In order to measure the SAR value, one should look behind the packaging of their cell phone. It is mentioned there. You can also find it on the website of your phone maker.

There is another way, a much easier way. Although this seemingly works only on Android phones.

To check your Android Phone’s Radiation:

    1. On your Phone, open the dialer or phone app.
    2. Now dial *#07# on your phone.
    3. This will show you the SAR measurement of your device as specified by the manufacturer.
    4. If the above code doesn’t work, go to Settings > About Phone > regulatory Information.

So how much SAR is better?

Lower is better, although as noted earlier FCC in the US considers SAR level of 1.6W/kg good enough. So don’t worry if your phone has a SAR value of 1.2 or something like that even though most phones are nowadays in the range of 0.5 to 0.6.

At the same time, you can limit the exposure phone radiation by using earphones with mobile when you are talking and limiting the usage of mobile devices.

Also, usually bigger phone brands tend to have phones with lower SAR value.

  • Uber and Traditional Taxi: Ensuring a Level Playing Field

Uber and Traditional Taxi: Ensuring a Level Playing Field

Sabena steps out the house dressed up for an event. She stands at the edge of the street and points her folded hands down with her thumb or index finger out. This is done to alert a taxi driver of her readiness to board. Sabena makes her destination known to the driver and that is followed by a bargain of the fare. A smooth but sometimes rough ride to the destination and then a drop-off to search for the next passenger while burning fuel/gas.

That was the only narrative on the streets of Accra before the introduction of the world’s biggest taxi company that owns no vehicles somewhere in June 2016. This company uses technology to easily connect passenger to private drivers excluding the hustle of getting private transport. The technology does not give room for bargaining as it quantifies the cost of the journey using distance, time and others parameters.

Uber we all know gains much attraction within a short period after commencement as most of the cars that registered offered more comfort and “swag” than the traditional taxis. Uber with over 2 million drivers globally and valued at $70 billion has had a fair share of technology mishaps this year. From many court cases mostly filed by drivers and unhappy customers to the cyber attack of company data back in 2014 but was exposed this year. Espionage offences levelled against them and most recently, determining whether or not Uber is a transport firm or tech company.

The writer has some many thoughts to share regarding the above cases but the purpose of this write-up is to draw the attention of the particular problems Uber faces in our particular environment, the Uber-Taxi comparison and the way forward.

The issues particularly stem from two sentiments. First, the fact that Uber drivers are perceived to have taken customers from traditional taxis and secondly, the upfront of drivers associations seeking to point out the illegal operations of Uber. The first case of “customers transfer” does not really hold water from my point of view as competitions are bound to happen and thus the preparedness to counter the competitors marketing strategy.

The second which I feel must be addressed by removing all ambiguity is the concern of commercial drivers that Uber is using private cars for commercial purposes and as such the drivers do not pay income tax, commercial driver’s license and the roadworthy fee which is paid quarterly.

Looking forward, what can be done to ensure the smooth running of Uber alongside traditional taxis as they both of have their merits and demerits?

Tell me if you have not sat in an Uber in which the driver has no clue of the destination and is completely oblivious to using the Google map that comes with the application. It is annoying, right? You are expecting to have a quiet ride and concentrate on other matters but rather the driver keeps bordering you about the next route to take. And, some drivers can be so fraudulent that they intentionally take a longer route to increase the fare. This actually pisses me in all seriousness.

Uber should be mindful of the drivers they register on board to avoid scenarios above as well, also, the commercial drivers should make it point to better their services and put a stop to the Ghanaian lackadaisical attitude towards work.

If I can get an Uber to come pick me up at 1 am in the night at a very far and less busy town where I can’t in any way get a Taxi. Also, if I can bargain my way into paying less for a Taxi when I don’t have enough on me as compared to Uber where the price is fixed. Then these two entities must find a common ground to operate before the technologically advantaged Uber spreads its wings to the other major cities in the country.
