  • How to Calculate The Duty On Your Vehicle Using The Ghana Trade Hub Mobile App

How to Calculate The Duty On Your Vehicle Using The Ghana Trade Hub Mobile App

Buying a brand new vehicle in Ghana or from abroad could cost you a very huge amount of money. The reason being that most of the workers in Ghana are either low or middle-income earners.

As a result, the best option is to import a used vehicle from abroad at a relatively cheaper cost.

But buying a new vehicle from abroad, you need to pay for duty before your vehicle will be released for you. Most often, people are not able to pay for their duty leading to auctioning off the vehicle you imported from abroad.

Therefore it is important to check the duty of your vehicle to see whether you can afford it or not before you proceed with any other decision.

How to calculate your Vehicle Duty online in Ghana

There is a way you can follow to calculate your duty online without having to leave your home. Continue reading to know the procedure.

Download the Ghana Trade Hub Mobile App

First of all, you need to download the official Ghana Trade Hub mobile app from the Google play store or the Apple app store.

    Click on duty calculator

This option just like the name sounds it’s going to calculate the duty amount payable in Ghana cedis.

    Select Used vehicle

After clicking on duty calculator, there will be two tabs, you need to click on ‘used vehicle’. There is a second option which we are going to cover later in a separate article. But using this method you need to select a used vehicle.

Select the Make of the vehicle

We mostly confuse the make of a vehicle to its model. The make of the vehicle is the brand name of the vehicle. Examples, Toyota, Honda, Chevrolet, or Hyundai. Therefore you need to select the brand name of the vehicle you have imported or importing.

Select the model of the vehicle

The model of a vehicle is the name of the vehicle you have purchased or are purchasing. It’s the name of the vehicle you will hear on radio, TV or in a video commercial.

The model is the name that is attached to the Make of the vehicle. In the case of Toyota RAV 4, the model name is RAV 4.

In some cases where the model has different configurations, you need to select the one that fits well. For example, Toyota Corolla has over four (4) configurations (L, LE, S, SE), so in this case, you need to specify the letter attached to the model, for example, the model name for Toyota Corolla SE is Corolla SE.

Specify the Year the vehicle was manufactured

Under this section, you need to specifically choose the year the vehicle was manufactured by the company. In some situations, a model of a vehicle might have several manufacturing years, you need to select the one that fits your vehicle.

A slight mistake in the manufacture year will change the amount you are supposed to pay. Thus, if you are not certain about the manufacturing year, you need to contact the agency you bought the vehicle from or search online.

    Press on the ‘Find’ button

After pressing on the find button, a table with several results will be shown. This is where you need to check whether the details provided match the one you inputted. If the details do not correspond to the one you inputted, you need to go back and input the correct details.

    Select View Duty

When you’re done inputting the correct info, you will then press on the view duty button to view the total duty amount payable. You can then screenshot it or write it down somewhere for future reference.

NOTE: The Ghana import duty is assessed based on several criteria including volume, weight, or the value of the item (vehicle in this situation).

    Conclusion

The introduction of this platform is to help eradicate the action of “connection men” who take a huge amount of money that does not correspond to the official amount. Therefore, you can make use of this article to check your duty at your own convenience.

  • Car Manufacturing & Assembling Plants and Companies in Ghana

Car Manufacturing & Assembling Plants and Companies in Ghana

Ghana is one of the countries with the largest number of imported cars in the world. Though the duty on some of the cars is expensive, the importers find it very cheap comparing it to the new ones they will buy here in Ghana.

The main reason is that there are a few manufacturing and assembling plants. This has led to the establishment of several car manufacturing & assembling plants and companies in Ghana.

These car manufacturing & assembling plants and companies were established to produce their cars locally and therefore provide employment and also reduce the price of the cars. This will lead to reduced numbers of imports in Ghana.

All of the companies on our list today are foreign companies that have decided to establish their branches in Ghana to help grow the local automobile industry.

Except for one, Kantanka Automobile Company & Assembly Plant which is owned by the renowned Apostle Kwadwo Safo.

This article is focused on only three (3) of the car manufacturing & assembling plants and companies in Ghana whether it is owned by a foreign or local company.

    Mahindra Assembly Plant

This assembly plant is owned by an Indian company Mahindra & Mahindra Limited and their local partner Mahindra & Mahindra Ghana Limited; manufacturers of all Mahindra cars in Ghana and abroad.

The Mahindra Assembly plant was set up in Ghana to serve people in West Africa and the Africa continent at large and also explore the investment opportunities. The plant is close to 9.5 acres in size and is located at the Southern Part of Accra.

The cars produced from this assembly plant is sold to the Government of Ghana, state institutions, private institutions, United Nations officials in Ghana, Africa and across the globe.

Currently, the company has collaborated with Fidelity Bank Ghana to assist customers through their hire purchase and lease scheme.

Under this policy, customers can acquire a Mahindra car and pay later according to the agreed terms and conditions.

Kantanka Automobile Company Limited & Manufacturing Plant

This is the only car manufacturing & assembling plant and company in Ghana that is owned solely by a Ghanaian, Apostle Dr. Kwadwo Safo. He is also the leader and founder of the Kristo Asafo Mission in Ghana.

Before setting up his own company, he worked at the popular Suame Magazine in Kumasi in the early 1970s. Now enough of the history stuff.

This plant was established to provide cars that were meant for the normal Ghanaian person and road.

After a car is manufactured by Kantanka Automobile LTD, it is tested on almost all the types of roads across the country.

As a result, all the vehicles that come out perfectly fits the Ghanaian road and can last longer. Some of which are the Kantanka Saloon, Onantefo, and Omama.

The plant has in the past years produced vehicles that use solar, electricity, clapping, handkerchief, ring, and even a walking stick to function and is located at Gomoa Mpota.

    Volkswagen Ghana Assembly Plant

This is the latest car manufacturing & assembling plant and company in Ghana. The first vehicle assembled in Ghana was unveiled in August 2020 and it is located at Accra North Industrial Area.

The Volkswagen assembly plant is aimed at providing quality cars for Ghanaians and people from outside Ghana alongside employing Ghanaians.

Volkswagen’s assembly plant in Ghana will initially focus on new passenger cars, SUVs, and light commercial vehicles including pickups and minibusses which are some of the most used cars in Ghana.

The target is to produce 5,000 brand new cars in the first year as a result of the high demand in these cars around the world.

    Conclusion

Most of the wealthy countries are mainly wealthy because of the automobile industry. For example, Ferrari has a major influence on Italy’s economy and when they seized production because of the COVID-19 it affected the economy.

Therefore, these car manufacturing & assembling plant and companies in Ghana play a major role in the country and should be encouraged to work harder.

Other companies have also shown interest in establishing their assembly plants in Ghana. For example, Toyota, Sinotruk, etc.; and are expected to begin production by the end of the year.

Do you know of other car manufacturing & assembling plants and companies in Ghana? Please comment in the comments section below and we will put it in our subsequent articles.

  • Will Electric Cars Be Widely Available in Ghana Anytime soon?

Will Electric Cars Be Widely Available in Ghana Anytime soon?

Electric cars are becoming more and more popular, but will they ever become widely available in Ghana? The government has been putting some measures in place to try and increase the availability of electric cars, including a massive $60 million factory that’s currently being built.

But will this be enough to make them widely available? The answer isn’t clear yet, but there are many different perspectives on this issue here.

    About electric cars

Electric cars are becoming more popular as the technology improves and becomes more affordable. Some major car manufacturers are investing in electric car production, and it is expected that the number of electric car models will increase in the next few years.

However, it is still unclear if electric cars will be widely available in Ghana anytime soon. The current infrastructure and lack of charging stations are major obstacles to widespread adoption of electric cars in Ghana. Additionally, the high cost of electric cars is another barrier to entry for many consumers.

How well will electric cars help Ghana’s economy?

The benefits of electric cars are many and varied, but they’re especially well-suited to countries like Ghana that are aiming to improve their environmental credentials and reduce their dependence on imported oil.

Electric cars emit no pollutants and very little noise, so they can help reduce both local air pollution and noise pollution. They’re also much more efficient than gasoline or diesel-powered vehicles, so they can save you money on fuel costs.

Is there any electric car brands available in Ghana?

Yes, there are a few electric car brands available in Ghana. However, they are not as widely available as they are in other countries. The main reason for this is that the infrastructure needed to support electric cars is not yet in place.

There are only a few charging stations and they are not located in all parts of the country. Additionally, the cost of electric cars is still quite high compared to traditional gasoline cars.

Nevertheless, some people are still interested in purchasing electric cars and there is a growing market for them.

    Electric car brands in Ghana

There are a few electric car brands available in Ghana, but they are not widely available. The most popular brand is Tesla, but there are also a few other options including BMW, Nissan, Volvo and our very own Kantanka Automobiles.

Electric cars are becoming more popular in Ghana, but they are still not as common as traditional gasoline-powered cars. It is unclear if electric cars will become more widely available in Ghana anytime soon, but it is certainly possible.

Will electric cars last in Ghana?

    Kantanka Amoanimah electric vehicle

It’s no secret that electric cars are becoming more popular each year. In countries like the United States and China, sales of electric vehicles are increasing rapidly. But what about Ghana?

Will electric cars last in Ghana? A few months ago a team of students from Michigan Technological University discovered that when people learned how to maintain their own vehicles they drove fewer miles.

The thought behind this is if people know how to take care of their vehicle they will not have to buy new ones as often which could help the environment.

If it’s true then maybe we can expect an increase in electric cars in Ghana at some point but for now we’ll just have to wait and see.

    Conclusion

In conclusion, the lack of infrastructure and the high cost of electric vehicles are the main barriers to widespread adoption of electric vehicles in Ghana.

However, with the right policies in place, and with continued improvements in technology, it is possible that electric vehicles could become more widely available in Ghana in the future.

  • Short Code To Check Vehicle Registration and Insurance Details in Ghana

Short Code To Check Vehicle Registration and Insurance Details in Ghana

The dream of every person in this world is to own a house, have a family, and buy a car (please note that the order is different for each person). Owning a car is seen as an achievement by many people in Ghana because once you buy a car it is assumed that you have money.

Whether or not this is true or not, that is a discussion for another time, but one thing that we can all agree on is that when you buy a car, you must register it and then purchase an insurance policy for it. This way, whenever you are involved in an accident or your car gets stolen, you have money somewhere to buy a new one.

In Ghana, the main agency in charge of vehicle registration is the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) which has its headquarters in Accra. Also, the authorized agency for vehicle insurance is the National Insurance Commission (NIC) whose headquarters is also located in Accra.

According to the laws and constitution of Ghana, these are the two (2) main agencies in charge of vehicle registration and insurance respectively. But that does not mean you will not be allowed to buy a private insurance policy for your car.

Apart from the insurance package from the National Insurance Commission, you can also purchase personal insurance from any of the insurance companies in Ghana for your vehicle. This article is going to show you the shortcode you can use to check your vehicle registration and insurance details in Ghana.

Short Code To Check Vehicle Registration and Insurance Details in Ghana

In our everyday lives, one thing we do very often is board a car or motor. Whether it is an Uber, Bolt, trotro, Taxi, Yango, Shaxi, VVIP, VIP, OA, STC, boarding such buses always comes with a risk.

One risk most people do not seem to be concerned about more is their security and safety. It is assumed that once the driver is able to drive on the road, your security and safety are assured. Even people who are more educated are often blind-sighted by fake insurance stickers in front of vehicles and some don’t even check at all.

To combat this risk of impostor drivers and unauthorized vehicles using the road, the National Insurance Commission (NIC) launched a comprehensive electronic database. This was done by introducing a shortcode you can use to check the vehicle registration and insurance details on your phone (either feature “yam” or smartphone) in Ghana.

The shortcode for checking vehicle registration and insurance details in Ghana is *920*57#. To use this shortcode to check the vehicle registration and insurance details on any vehicle in Ghana, follow the steps below.

    1. Dial *920*57# on your feature “yam” phone or smartphone
    2. Enter the vehicle registration (this is simply whatever you see on the number plate of the vehicle). For example, GE-3454-21.
    3. If the insurance is active, you will see ACTIVE POLICY next to the vehicle registration
    4. The make and colour of the car, period the insurance is valid for, the insurer, and then from which is usually NIC will all be listed for you.
    5. Cross-check these details with the car and if they match, then the vehicle has been duly registered with the DVLA and has an active insurance policy. Otherwise, the vehicle is not worthy to be on the road.

    Conclusion

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and the National Insurance Commission (NIC) with the introduction of this system have helped many people to be vigilant when it comes to picking cars. Not only has it helped civilians, but it has also helped law enforcement officers like policemen to catch people who use unregistered and uninsured vehicles on our roads.

This article has clearly explained everything you need to know about the shortcode and how to check vehicle registration and insurance details in Ghana. The steps are straightforward, but they can be difficult for some people.

If you find this difficult, you ask for assistance from any young person around you or you can equally write it in the comments section below and I will be glad to help you out. Lastly, share this article with your friends and loved ones as you might be helping someone in need.

How can I check if my car is insured in Ghana?

Dial *920*57# on your phone and then enter the vehicle registration of your car (your number plate details). If your car is insured, the details about your car and the insurance will be shown.

How can I check if my car insurance is still valid?

Dial *920*57# on your phone and then enter the vehicle registration of your car (your number plate details). If your car insurance is still valid, ACTIVE POLICY will be displayed next to your vehicle registration and you can also find the period of validity.

What do we mean by insurance?

Insurance is an agreement, which is represented by a policy, in which an individual or an entity receives financial protection or reimbursement against losses from an insurance company.

How to Clear a Car at the Tema Port

Getting a confirmation from your shipping agency that your car is arriving anytime soon is one of the happiest moment that everyone experiences when they ship car (s) from abroad.

But the fact that your car is arriving at the port is not a guarantee that you will get your car easily. You can ship your car, but if you don’t know how to clear your car from the port, it’s a total waste of time and money.

Clearing your car from the port is one of the major problems many people face when they import car (s) from abroad.

Due that we are writing this article to guide you through the process of clearing your car from the port.

The process of clearing your car from the port is a very tedious process but after following this article, you’re going to find it easier because this article is going to cover all the aspects of the clearing your car from the port.

How to Clear A Car at the Tema Port

The clearing of the car from the Tema port involves three (3) major stages and these are:

    • Pre-vessel arrival
    • Post-vessel arrival and
    • Final clearance and delivery.

Under each stage, there’re some processes that need to be followed and now let’s take each stage one after the other and discuss the processes under each stage.

    Pre-vessel arrival

The pre-vessel arrival is the stage where you are allowed to begin the process of clearing your car even before the car actually arrives at the port.

This makes shipment to be processed faster when the car arrives at the Tema Port.

Also under this stage, there are some certain processes and these are:

Submit car clearance documents to the clearing agent

The first process is to submit your clearance documents to the clearing agent who will be doing the clearing of the vehicle for you. These include a bill of lading, commercial invoice, packing and other shipment documents.

    Clearing agent reviews documents

After you submit the documents to the clearing agent, he/she will read through the documents to check for errors or missing documents.

Clearing agent creates UCR for you

Once all the errors have been corrected or all missing documents have been submitted, the agent will use the shipment documents to create a Unique Consignment Reference (UCR) on the GCNet platform.

Clearing agent proceeds to the Pre-Clearance Assessment Report System (PARS)

The clearing agent will then proceed to the PARS to send a request to the Ministry of Trade and Industry for them to issue you an Import Declaration Form (IDF) using the UCR he created on the GCNet platform.

Clearing agent applies for Customs Classification and Valuation Report (CCVR)

When the IDF is received, the agent will apply for the Customs Classification and Valuation Report (CCVR), which will be issued on the WEST BLUE IT platform.

The CCVR will give an assessment of duties due and will also show the risk level assigned to the cargo containing the car. Green represents a low risk, Yellow represents medium risk and Red represents a high risk.

    Post vessel arrival

The post vessel arrival stage is where the car arrives at the port and the last but one stage. This stage involves two main processes.

Submit Bill of Entry and make payments

Once the cargo containing the car arrives at the port, the agent will obtain rotation number, location of the container and all information related to the cargo from the shipping line.

The information together with the CCVR and IDF will be used to prepare a Bill of Entry (Customs Declaration which will be sent to the Customs Management System.

The declaration will be validated and a unique reference number will be assigned. After that, you will be required to pay the assessed duty and taxes on the declaration at the assigned Bank.

    Review of all submitted documents

When the payment is confirmed, the Customs Compliance Officer assigned to the Declaration will start verification of the Declaration with the supporting documents.

Depending on the risk level of the container, additional tests will be done before a “Delivery Allowed Message” will be issued for the car to be released. You might also pay some terminal charges.

    Final clearance and delivery

This is the final stage of the clearing process of your car. This stage involves one main process.

    Exit verification

The driver of the vehicle conveying the car out of the port will report to the Customs Preventive Section for Exit Verification before the car will exit the port.

After the Customs Preventive Section performs their review, and it’s safe for the car to exit the port, the car will be approved for exit through the gate.

The Customs gate will also check whether the Customs Preventive Section has performed their review and then update the status of the container containing your car as “Exited Port”.

Finally, your car will be delivered to you.

    Conclusion

In summary, the clearing of a car from the Tema port is a little bit complicated but this article has simplified the process for you to understand it clearly.

Due to the fact that most of the clearing process involves a clearing agent, make sure that the agent you select is trusted and genuine.
