Top 10 Most Popular Smartphone Brands in Ghana

Do you remember the last time you didn’t see a smartphone in Ghana? There’s no way you would unless you live in the most rural area in the country and even that, I doubt that you’ve not seen a smartphone in a very long time.

According to a study conducted by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) and the National Communications Authority (NCA) in March 2020, out of a sample number of houses chosen at random from across the 16 regions of Ghana, over 46.1% were smartphone owners as compared to 12.8% of people using feature phones, a.k.a. “yam”. This shows that the number of people using smartphones in Ghana keeps increasing every year.

One reason why most people use smartphones is their relatively cheaper price as compared to other technological gadgets on the market like tablets, laptops, and desktop computers. Among these percentage of smartphone users, there are several brands that can be said to be the most popular smartphone brands in Ghana.

Therefore, this article is going to show you the top 10 most popular smartphone brands in Ghana. These smartphones were selected based on their popularity on social media, and by observations, we have made on the average Ghanaian smartphone user, thus, you can trust that these are exactly the top smartphone brands in Ghana.

Top 10 Most Popular Smartphone Brands in Ghana

Smartphones have taken over the world in the past few years and as time progresses the number of users just keeps increasing. In Ghana also, the number of people using smartphones is many and each of them has specific brands they use. In no particular order, below are the top 10 most popular smartphone brands in Ghana.

    Samsung

Samsung, although not established in Ghana, is one of the most popular smartphone brands in the country. We can never list popular smartphone brands in Ghana without mentioning Samsung after the devices they have made for us over the years.

The series of Samsung phones that made them popular in Ghana was the Galaxy S Series. This series dominated and is dominating the smartphones market in almost every part of Ghana. Apart from the Galaxy S series, they also have the Galaxy A, Galaxy J, and Galaxy Note series.

Among these series, the Galaxy S3, Galaxy S4, Galaxy S5, through to the Galaxy S6, and S7 Edges were among some of the popular brands. Now, the Samsung Z fold, Galaxy J, and Galaxy A series are also household names in Ghana.

    Apple iPhone

On the global scale, Apple is one of (if not) the most popular smartphone brands in the world. Likewise, in Ghana Apple iPhones are one of the most popular smartphone brands not only in Accra but all the other parts of the country.

Since the first release of the iPhone 3G some years back, Apple has constantly lived up to expectations in the delivery of nice smartphones for their clientele. This is what has kept the brand on the lips of Ghanaians and among the most popular smartphone brands in the country.

The smartphones under this brand are the iPhone 3G, iPhone 4, iPhone 5, 5C, and 5S, iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6S, and 6Splus, iPhone 7 and 7Plus, iPhone 8 and 8Plus, iPhone X, XR, XS, and XSMax, iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max, iPhone 12 Mini, 12, 12 Pro, and 12 Pro Max and the iPhone 13, 13 Pro, and 13 Pro Max.

    Nokia

If you ask 10 people in Ghana the first mobile phone (not a smartphone) they used, you will likely get more than 5 of them saying Nokia. Unlike some of the other smartphone brands on the list, Nokia started by manufacturing feature phones (“yam” phones) like the ever-famous Nokia 3310, Nokia X4, etc.

Through that, they were able to build their customer base in Ghana and once they started manufacturing their smartphones, their customers already knew what they were going to spend their money on. Some of the smartphones they have manufactured are the Nokia Lumia series, Nokia G50, Nokia XR20, Nokia 8, and Nokia X100.

    TECNO

TECNO Mobility is the official smartphone sponsor of English-based football club Manchester City and also one of the most popular smartphone brands in Ghana. Over the years, TECNO has kept on producing quality, affordable, and durable smartphones for Ghanaians and the world at large.

Due to the price tag on their smartphones and what they provide their customers, it is not a surprise that they have a huge share of the Ghanaian smartphone market. The popular smartphones series produced by TECNO include the TECNO Phantom Series, TECNO Camon series, TECNO Spark series, and the TECNO Pop series.

    Infinix

The name Infinix became popular on the Ghanaian market some few years ago after they began releasing affordable smartphones in Ghana. Owned by a Chinese company by the name Transsion Holdings, Infinix has been able to rise through the ranks to become one of the most popular smartphone brands in Ghana.

The Infinix Hot series, Infinix S series, Infinix Zero series, and the Infinix Note series are some of the main flagships that are available on the Ghanaian market. All these smartphones are not only affordable but also provide users with value for their money.

    iTel

Whenever we mention affordable smartphones in Ghana, the first brand that comes to mind is iTel. It looks as if they make their smartphones specifically for the average Ghanaian and as such are among one of the most popular smartphone brands in the country.

It is fair to say that iTel smartphones are the most affordable smartphones in Ghana now. The iTel S17, P37, P37 Pro, A37, S16 Pro, A36, and a list of other devices are some of the smartphones that have been manufactured by iTel for their customers.

    Huawei

Huawei is the largest Chinese mobile phone manufacturing company in the world. Not only do they operate in China, but Huawei also has a massive clientele in Ghana which makes it a popular smartphone brand here.

They have over the years made some positive contributions to the Ghanaian mobile phone market by producing quality smartphones. Some of which include the Huawei Y5, Huawei Y6p, Huawei nova 7i, Huawei Y9a, Huawei P40 Pro, Huawei Y8p, etc.

    Xiaomi (Redmi)

Xiaomi just as the name suggests is a Chinese mobile phone manufacturing company that started in 2010, making it one of the youngest smartphone brands in the world. Nevertheless, Xiaomi has been able to gain a name for itself as one of the most popular smartphone brands in Ghana.

The Redmi Note 11 Pro, Redmi Note 10 Pro, Xiaomi Mi 10, Poco X3 Pro, Redmi Note 11T 5G, Redmi Note 11 Pro+ are some of the smartphones they have produced so far. All these devices have amazing features which are giving some of the big brands a competition.

    TCL

TCL just like Infinix and Xiaomi is a Chinese company that produces smart devices for which smartphones are included. TCL despite having a massive market on the global scale is now finding its way in the Ghanaian market and makes it one of the popular smartphone brands in Ghana.

They have the TCL 20A 5G, TCL X20 SE, 20Y, TCL 20L+, TCL Pro 5G smartphones under the brand. Their smartphones are affordable and have some cool specs which makes them a good choice to go for.

    LG

LG is the last but not least popular smartphone brand in Ghana. LG has been there for over a decade now and has contributed its quota to the smartphone market in Ghana. Not only do they make smartphones, but they also provide laptops and other electronic gadgets.

Some of the LG smartphones on the market are LG V60 ThinQ 5G, LG G8X ThinQ, LG Velvet, LG V50 ThinQ, etc. Similar to some of the brands mentioned earlier, LG smartphones are affordable and when taken care of can last for a long time.

  • Things To Look Out For When Buying A New TECNO, Infinix or itel Phone

Things To Look Out For When Buying A New TECNO, Infinix or itel Phone

Phones have become part of our everyday life. We use phones in talking to our relatives, chatting with friends, capturing memories, making transactions and many more.

You might be using a phone that has been troubling you or you are currently planning on getting a new phone and wondering the best phone to buy

In finding the best phone to use, it requires a lot of patience and comparisons. Well in this article I am not going to tell you the phone to buy as I don’t know your budget but I am going to take you through things to look out for when buying a new phone in Ghana.

    The Operating System

When you are thinking of buying a new phone, what you first need to think of is the type of operating system to use, you can go for iPhone with an iOS or a smartphone with Android Operating System.

There has been a lot of debates on which one of them being the best phone to use, the truth is it all depends on you the user and what you prefer.

iPhone has made their phone super cool to use with its simple operating system with providing the best apps, software and system updates and the one thing that makes the phone popular is its tight security.

Android on the other hand also has its own unique features such as you can customize and change everything you want on the app. With android, you can even choose where to place the battery icon and a whole lot. So choosing the best one depends on you as stated earlier.

    The Camera

You might be a photo genetic and there can not be a single day or occasion that you will attend without taking pictures.

Maybe you are also not that type but taking pictures is very necessary, you might be like me whose works involve taking pictures and showing it to customers for them to choose the one they love.

    Shot on TECNO Spark 5

When buying a new phone you need to check the camera specs, which is the megapixels, the higher the mp, the better quality your pictures will be.

    The RAM

RAM stands for Random Access Memory and your phone speed depends on your RAM, that is why it is important to check on the type of RAM.

A phone with good RAM makes your phone super fast and also flexible to use. Phones with 2GB of RAM and above performs faster as compared to the ones that are below 2GB.

But if your budget can not get you a phone with a RAM that is from 2GB above then what you need to do to your phone to make it run smoothly is to limit installing too many apps on your phone because apps installed on your phone runs on your phones RAM.

    Battery Life

We can’t talk about the phone without talking about the battery, there are a lot of phones on the market, but what most people also look for in phones is how long the battery will last.

When buying a new phone you need to go for phones with 3000 mAh battery and above. I will advise you not to go for the ones that are lower than 2000 mAh.

    Phone Storage

Storage is also important as that is where you will store all your memories into, be it a picture, videos, music and many more.

When buying a new phone what you need to check is the storage size, most phones nowadays comes with a 32GB memory capacity however there are phones that also comes with a 16GB and 8GB capacity.

Depending on your budget you have to buy the one that suits your but its recommended to buy the ones that are above 16GB but If your budget is low, then you can buy the lower storage phone and later buy yourself a new SD card.

    Final Words

When buying a new phone, you really need to look into somethings before making your choice, everyone has its own way of using a smartphone some use it for only calls, some use it for games, some use it to work and many more.

So in this article, we went through the things to look out for before buying a new phone and why it is important to consider them before going for your next new phone.

Tecno Camon 18 Premier: Price, Specs, Features Review And Best Deals

Many fans of the TECNO Brand will be excited to know that the Camon Series is back with the new TECNO Camon 18 Premeir. The TECNO Camon series are generally a heavy camera-focused line from the rising Chinese phone maker.

However, in recent times, the devices have not just been your typical “master of the camera game”, they have added a lot of performance improvements as evident in the TECNO Camon 16 Premier which was released and accepted widely in spite of the pandemic last year.

What’s facsinating about the Camon 18 Premier is the Ultra-steady Gimbal Camera technology that TECNO has introduced into it.

According to TECNO, the 12MP Stabilized Gimbal Camera (part of a 3 camera rear camera set-up on the device) can take care of all “strong video shake and blurred images” so you can enjoy shooting ultra clear and stable videos.

Before looking at all the features that the device brings forward, let’s look at the specifications of the device.

Features of Tecno Camon 18 Premier

    Camera

As with any of the older Camon series, the camera is the main talking point of this device. The device itself comes with 4 cameras in total.

    These are:

    • Front: a 32MP Front Camera with Dual Flash
    • Rear: a 64 MP main sensor + a 12 MP Stabilized Gimbal Camera + a 8 MP Periscope Telephoto

This setup gives the device the chance to do amazing stuff. First is what TECNO calls a 60X Hyper Zoom. This is actually a 5X optical zoom and 12X digital zoom. This zoom zoom is complemented with TECNO’s own proprietary AI TAIVOS technology. You should expect a little blur when you zoom in on photos taken past the 5X zoom but that should not be much of an issue.

Also, the camera has some wonderful night mode, especially for videos taken in the portrait mode. The general night mode of the camera also utilises algorithms to automatically activate when the night is detected.

And when it’s night, TECNO says the device can help you capture images of the moon, which is referred to as the “Super Moon”. Here, the Camon 18 Premier is utilising mother company – Transsion’s own Galileo algorithm engine.

    Battery

Who wouldn’t want to keep using their phone without worrying about loss of juice, especially when elecricity is sometimes unpredictable? Well, the TECNO Camon 18 Premier makes an improvement over the 16 Premier in the battery department with it’s 4750 mAh battery.

The Camon 18 Premier is also capable of 33W Flash charge (fast charging) which means you don’t have to worry much to charge it overnight, and should you forget it charge it, you only need a few minutes to get it back on track. According to TECNO’s marketing, you can get the device charged to 64% in just 30 minutes. This is an improvement from earlier devices.

    Performance

Earlier, I wrote about how TECNO’s Camon series have been taking performance serious in recent releases. The Camon 18 Premier is not exception in this case, shipping with Mediatek’s latest Helio G96 chip with an Octa core CPU.

This chip ensures that performance-wise, the TECNO Camon 18 should not fail you in your day to day activities.

You should also be able to run a lot of your games at performance level settings. Moreover, the G96 has very good 4G even for your dual sim setup. You should be able to enjoy fast internet too whether you are on SIM 1 or SIM 2.

    Design and Display

Design-wise, the TECNO Camon 18 looks flat and because of it’s thinner form, is easy to hold up in the hands. I am perosnally not a fan of branding at the back of devices, however, TECNO has kept the branding minimalistic this time, maybe adding up to the design.

The Camon 18 Premier comes in 3 colours:

    • Dusk Gray
    • Ceramic White
    • Iris Purple

The dot-in display also does well to give the user a lot of screen real estate so videos and other full screen apps can be enjoyed very well.

The screen itself supports 120hz, thanks to the G96 chipset. The 120hz support means gaming will be much smoother and scrolling will feel seamless. However, TECNO gives the option to turn of 120hz if you feel you don’t need it, giving you bigger gains in the battery field. This, I feel is very good.

    Software

Android 11 is what the TECNO Camon 18 ships with, and TECNO is promising an upgrade to Android 12 soon. However, the big part of the software will be TECNO’s own HiOS.

With HiOS 8 on the Camon 18 Premier, there are more software features like real-time weather, added data security, smart card, phone cloner and a voice changer. Lots of fun.

Tecno Phantom X (2021): Prices, Specs, Features & Best Deals

Tecno has once again added a new baby to their Phantom series called the Tecno Phantom X. The Tecno Phantom X is the direct successor to the Phantom 9 which was released in July 2019.

That sounds a little bit weird to the normal frequency new phones in a series are released right? Normally, new smartphones are released just a year after their predecessor. But you and I can agree that the COVID-19 pandemic did its worse last year and that might have caused an interruption in the normal release frequency.

None of that matters at the moment since the Tecno Phantom X has finally arrived after much anticipation from the Phantom 9 users and lovers of the Phantom series.

This year, although Phantom X’s design cues are not new to the system, it is undoubtedly one of the best designs we have seen so far in the Phantom series of smartphones. The curved edges are one of the main things that will draw your attention if you ever used the Phantom 9.

The camera arrangement has a triple layout with the main camera having a 50MP camera, and the remaining cameras having a 13MP telephoto camera and 8MP ultrawide camera. Enough of the plenty talk, let’s jump right into the details.

Features of the Tecno Phantom X

    Android 11, HIOS 7.6

Since the first release of the HIOS some few years ago, Tecno has gradually been upgrading it and now we are in the 7th generation. As a result, the Tecno Phantom X runs Android 11 and the latest HIOS version, 7.6. With this collaboration, the uses of the new Phantom X are assured of nothing but the best in their device’s Operating System (OS).

The new HIOS 7.6 has an all-new design that comes with a Cosmos Blue structured with some ocean elements giving you the feeling of the breeze right on your phone. Also, you can set the dark mode on your phone to a preferred time. This means whenever the time is up your device will automatically switch from light to dark mode.

    Fingerprint Sensor for Strong Security

Whenever we buy a new smartphone, the first setting we do is to place a security lock on it. Gone were the days where we had to go through the hassle of inputting passwords or PIN codes whenever we wanted to open our phones. The fingerprint provided by Tecno on the Phantom X is very secured making sure only you have access to your device. You can also set it up in other apps as well to enhance your security.

    6.7″ OLED Display

Apart from the sensors and the Operating System, the Phantom X can also boast of a big 6.7 inch curved OLED screen. With this size, you can enjoy your game and videos in high quality. With the 1080×2340 pixel resolution, you are assured of nothing but the best colours and display.

    Triple Layout Camera

We can never talk about the Tecno Phantom X without talking about the camera. At the back of the Phantom X you will see a vertical triple camera layout with 50 MP, f/1.9, (wide), 1/1.3″, 13 MP, f/2.4, 50mm (telephoto), 8 MP, f/2.3, (ultrawide). With this, you rest assured that you can capture all your moments in clear pictures. If you are the night outing type, you are still sorted because you can still capture your amazing moments at night in clear pixels.

    4700 mAh Li-Po Battery

Finally, the Tecno Phantom X is powered by a 4700 mAh Li-Po battery. This is a very huge upgrade as compared to the 3500mAh battery of the Phantom 9. With this capacity, you can use your device to the fullest without worrying about having to charge your phone. For game lovers, you can also enjoy your game without having problems with a low battery.

  • Why TECNO and INFINIX have a strong market presence in Ghana

Why TECNO and INFINIX have a strong market presence in Ghana

Mobile phones can be said to be the most possessed devices worldwide. Most users look to specific specs and features when buying them. Some also buy them according to their budget.

In this article, I’ll discuss why Ghanaians prefer Tecno and Infinix phones, and as a result, both companies have established a strong market in the country.

    They’re relatively cheap

As compared to Samsung and iPhones, Infinix and Tecno are very cheap. Ghana is a developing country with more than half of the population making minimum wage.

Wages that pay bills at their homes and sometimes not even enough cannot afford expensive, flashy phones. Some of the Samsung and iPhones even cost more than what most Ghanaians make monthly. Whereas with the Infinix and Tecno, they’re very affordable to the average Ghanaian.

Some cost as low as GHS 300, which is one of the main reasons they have a massive market in ghana.

    They’re simple to use

These two phones don’t have a complex nature as to their use. For example, downloading music offline on your phone to listen to is very simple with Infinix and Tecno.

But compare it to an iPhone, where you have to subscribe to a monthly subscription to stream music on the phone, which also means additional cost. Or sometimes download an additional application to listen to music, which means it’s going to occupy more space on your phone.

The average Ghanaian likes simplicity and doesn’t love paying bills that will tend to Infinix or Tecno option.

They have very lasting battery health

One of the most notable features of these two phones is their battery health. According to research made by experts on Google, an Infinix phone’s battery (5000mAh)can last up to four(4)days after being for up to three(3) hours. It takes (3) hours to be fully charged, and when it does, it lasts for four days.

Tecno Spark 4 has also had a battery of 4000mAh which lasts for up to (3) days after fully charging.

    They have good camera quality

Camera quality is one of the essential features most users look for in a phone. Both mobile phones have had good camera quality since being introduced years ago.

According to mobile phone experts, the Tecno Camon 17 Pro has a quality of 64MP ultra-clear quad-camera, which is by far better than any other phone camera. A recent comparison was made between the Tecno Camon 15 pro and iPhone 11, and it came out that the Tecno phone had the best camera quality.

    They are very durable

Like I said earlier, the average Ghanaian makes minimum wage and wouldn’t love to spend their money on products that won’t last long. The Tecno and Infinix phones aside, their unique features are known for their durability irrespective of Tecno or Infinix phone type.

A Tecno phone which is handled with care, can be lost for up to over four years. A friend’s mom has been using her Tecno Camon 8 since 2016 and still doesn’t give her any problems whatsoever.

    Conclusion

Sometimes it’s not because of the country’s economy, but taste and preference make people choose Tecno or Infinix.

Most Ghanaians don’t earn much to take care of their families and themselves to even think of affording the luxury of using the latest iPhone or Samsung flagship phone.

Our electricity problems in Ghana also come as a factor when most Ghanaians are shopping for their mobile phones because they need phones with long-lasting and strong batteries that can sustain them when they don’t have electrical power at home.

I also talked about the durability of these two brands. They have a long lifespan if nothing damaging happens to them. They can last for over four years with good battery health too.
