    University of Ghana Students Win Green Development Award with AI-Powered “Climate Sentinel”

    A team from the University of Ghana took home the Green Development Award at the Huawei Global ICT Competition by creating an AI-powered system to fight deforestation in Ghana’s forests.

    Meet the Team
    The winning group included Wisdom Nana-Abena Ogbonna, Ryan Nii Akwei Brown, and Jehoaddan Ebrah Andoh. Under the guidance of their lecturer, Mr. Julius Ludu, they built “Climate Sentinel,” an AI and Internet of Things system designed to monitor forest reserves in real time.

    Why “Climate Sentinel” Matters
    After reading that nine of Ghana’s forty-four forest reserves have been overtaken by illegal miners, the students decided to tackle the problem with technology. Their system uses:

    • IoT Sensors placed throughout forest areas to collect data on sound, motion, and environmental changes
    • AI Algorithms that analyse sensor data in the cloud to spot signs of tree cutting or encroachment
    • Real-Time Alerts to notify rangers and local authorities when potential deforestation activity is detected

    By combining cloud computing, big data, and AI, the team built a monitoring network that can cover large areas and send instant warnings, giving forest managers the chance to respond before damage spreads.

    A Global Stage for Innovation

    This year’s Huawei ICT Competition saw a record 210,000 participants from over 2,000 universities in more than 100 countries.

    • Teams first qualified at national and regional levels across three tracks: Practice, Innovation, and Programming
    • The Ghanaian group placed second in the Innovation track regionally, earning a spot in the Global Finals in China
    • In the finals, they stood out for their green development focus and won the Green Development Award

    Professor Ebenezer Owusu, Head of the Computer Science Department at the University of Ghana, praised Huawei for giving students a platform to apply ICT skills in real-world problems. He said the competition helps students build teamwork, problem-solving abilities, and hands-on expertise.

    Ritchie Peng, Director of ICT Strategy and Business Development at Huawei, noted that the Innovation track aims to drive green development and digital inclusion. He explained that topics evolve each year to match emerging needs in areas like agriculture, healthcare, and education.

    Are you considering opening a position in forex? A unique asset, forex is very different from other trades. One element you must understand before investing is the spread, which describes the difference in currency pairs. Below, we discuss the spread, how it is worked out, and the many factors that can influence it.

    What is the spread in forex?

    Forex is traded in currency pairs. When investing, you will notice a difference between the buy and sell prices. This difference between them is the spread. Also known as the bid/ask spread, it is a way for the broker to make money on a trade.

    Ask price 1.3094 – Bid price 1.3092  = Spread 0.0002. In this case, the spread is 2 pips.  

    It is worth noting that spreads can change. Spreads that are close together are described as tight spreads. Many investors prefer these as trades are more affordable. They are a sign that markets are stable.  

    When markets become volatile, then spreads will get bigger. These are described as wide. Generally, more stable world currency pairs will have tighter spreads as they have stronger relationships. Lesser known ones will have wider spreads, as they can be more volatile. 

    What is the difference between variable and fixed spreads?

    When you sign up with a forex broker, they will offer either fixed or variable spreads. Both have advantages and disadvantages. 

    A fixed spread stays the same, whatever the ask or bid values. The advantage of this is that it remains constant and is not subject to market volatility. The downside is that generally, a fixed spread is slightly higher than that which you would find with variable spreads. It is best if you want to hold long positions or you are new to trading.
     
    A variable spread will change. As the ask and bid values move, then the spread will change from tight to wide spreads. This tends to allow people to capitalize on market volatility and big changes.

    A yield spread is the same as a bid and ask spread. However, they are more commonly used for assets other than forex.

    These spreads only apply to brokers, so as a trader you are unlikely to encounter them. They happen when the bid is higher than the asking price. As an investor, with negative spreads, you get to trade without having to pay a broker anything. 

    It usually happens when currencies have a high interest rate. A broker makes a profit from holding or trading the government’s currency, so they essentially finance customers for using this pair.

    Numerous different factors can change a spread. As the market runs 24 hours a day, it is different from other assets and this poses a unique set of circumstances. The time of trade is one of the key factors in the changes. When currency trades are made in a different trading session, so if GBP was booked when its exchange was closed but the Asian market was open, the spread would be wider.  

    Other factors are global events and economics. Anything that can impact the rise and fall of a currency will influence forex spread. For example, a war in Europe could impact currencies, introduce volatility, and widen the spread. Even GDP and employment figures can do this.

    The Computerized School Selection & Placement System aims to place BECE candidates who have chosen schools into their choice of Senior High Schools.

    Whenever school placements are released, some unfortunate students have to go through a manual process to place themselves in vacant schools.

    How the Computerized School Selection & Placement System (CSSPS) Works

    The CSSPS works based on data collected from JHS students who have registered for the BECE. The students are allowed to choose 5 different schools that they will like to be placed in.

    The Schools are grouped based on categories that have been set by the Ghana Education Service (GES). This is to enable an even distribution of choices and to give “smaller schools” the chance to be selected.

    Once the system has this data (selection of schools), the system now uses the BECE results of the candidates to place them.

    This is done by using the candidate’s aggregate score from 6 subjects for the selection process. These subjects are the 4 Core
    (English Language, Mathematics Social Studies, Integrated Science) and the best two elective subjects.

    Students are then automatically placed in an SHS on merit, based on their aggregate results, the programmes they chose, vacancies in the chosen SHS, and availability of boarding facilities for those who chose it.

    However, oftentimes, some students are not placed at all and this leads to the need for them to do self-placement.

    What is Self Placement by CSSPS?

    The CSSPS Self Placement Module is a manual method by which BECE Graduates who could not be automatically placed in any of the Senior High Schools of their choice get to choose a school of their own.

    Self Placement is very easy and fast once you have the right steps to follow. In this article, we have detailed all steps that all qualified Junior High School (JHS) students who didn’t get any of their 5 chosen schools should follow to get a school.
