Biometric Ghanaian Passport Online: 4 things to know before applying

Getting a Biometric Ghanaian Passport Online has never been easy. Starting from January 2017, applications were opened to apply for legal biometric passports online. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration launched the online passport application service for Ghanaians to ease the mode of the application while ensuring maximum security for applicants.

Since then, there has been a lot of talk about the process, with some Ghanaian been sceptical about the whole “online application” process. We wrote a long post explaining every detail of the application process. You can read that in full here.

However, in this post, we look at some basic information we think you should know before you start the whole application process. If the information on this page is not enough, you can read a chunk of questions our readers have posted (with answers) about the application of the Biometric Ghanaian Passport online here. You can also ask your own questions on that same page.

Let us now look at the 4 important things you should know as a Ghanaian before you attempt the online application.

Is the whole online Biometric Ghanaian Passport Real?

Probably the most common question we are expected to answer each day. The answer still remains what it has been since day one. Yes! You can apply for your Biometric Ghanaian Passport online, and receive your genuine passport.

Yes, the application is real. Yes, there are testimonies of people who have filled the form and have received their passport.

Perhaps, the biggest yes would be that I personally renewed my passport through the process. Just like applying for Business Registration Online is real, so is the passport application.

What is the difference between an Expedited Application and a Standard Application?

As with almost any other service, some people may need it more than others. The Biometric Passport Application is no different in this regard. There are two types of Application.

The first one is the Expedited Application which is popularly known as “Express Passport”, and the Standard Application, which we could just refer to as the normal application.

The Express Passport application form costs GHS 100, while the Standard Passport Application costs GHS 50, here in Ghana. The reason the express application costs more is that you get your passport in 15 days using that method. The Standard Application averagely takes a month.

Note that a passport that was delivered via the Express Application looks no different from one that passed through the Standard Application.

Do I have to still go to the Passport Application Centre after filling my Ghanaian Passport Form Online and what will I be going to do there?

Yes, you need to go to the Accra Passport Application Centre (PAC) to complete your online application. One may ask: If the application is online, then why go to the Accra PAC to complete it?

Well, the PAC needs to take your biometric data and photograph with their own systems. Also, you will be vetted by up to 4 Vetting Officers at the PAC to determine that your application is genuine, you are a Ghanaian, among other things.

The PAC is located just around the Department of Urban Roads in Accra, near the popular Tema Station (Tema Station is ironically not in Tema). You can follow directions to the Accra Passport Application Centre here.

  • Finally! Google Maps Now Shows Live Traffic for Ghana

Finally! Google Maps Now Shows Live Traffic for Ghana

Google Maps is one of the most useful smartphone apps for the everyday person.

Staring this Month, one of the great features of Google Maps will be the ability to warn users in Ghana in real-time if there’s any traffic on their route and suggest alternative options so they don’t get stuck in traffic.

How does Google Know What’s Happening on the roads in Ghana?

Every time we use Google Maps and allow it to access our location, the app will also send location data back to its servers. That way, when our location is on a roadway, Google is able to analyze in real-time whether we’re actually moving or if we’re stuck in traffic.

By pooling data from millions of users around the clock in Ghana, and matching them with days, time, season, etc  Google is also able to see and also predict when and where you can expect heavy traffic.

Live traffic information for a place changes with day and time.
Live traffic information for a place changes with day and time.

What do the different colors like orange, red, and blue mean?

The colors indicate the speed of traffic on the road.

    • Green means there are no traffic delays.
    • Orange means there’s a medium amount of traffic.
    • Red means there are traffic delays. Generally, the more red, the slower the speed of traffic on the road.

How to use the Google Live Traffic in Ghana

To use the feature, just open your Google Maps on Android or iOS. If you are on PC, just search “{Your location} + ‘Live Traffic’” on Google.

Example: Search “East Legon Live Traffic” on Google

As an Existing subscriber of either Airtel or Tigo, you may have a lot of questions on your mind. Today, we look at some of these questions and give your verified answers to them.

Is the Airtel-Tigo Merger a "marriage of convenience'?

  • MTN Ghana Introducing “Allow Cash Out” Feature again to curb fraud

MTN Ghana Introducing “Allow Cash Out” Feature again to curb fraud

MTN Ghana has announced the comeback of the ‘Allow Cash Out’ feature which is to be launched on November 4, 2017. The feature enables mobile money customers to select ‘allow cash out’ before an agent can initiate a transaction.

A Grand Plan to curb Mobile Money Fraud

Speaking at the press briefing, Business Development Manager, MTN, Abdul-Majeed Rufai indicated that mobile money agents should not record subscribers’ numbers in the transaction sheets as they have issued new transaction booklets so as not to disclose numbers of the subscribers.

“We are bringing back that feature that will allow the customer first and foremost select allow cash out, turn it on before an agent can issue the transaction,” he said.

“Henceforth, agents should not disclose subscriber’s number on the transaction sheets. We have issued them transaction booklets not to disclose the number of the person who is loading so that once you go to an agent point, you can’t even get the number, let alone call the number” he added.

Meanwhile, MTN Ghana says sanctions given to some agents caught in mobile money fraud is the decommissioning of their stalls but so far, none has been sent to court.

MTN is also introducing an Agent Registry which is to sanitize agents’ network in the country. Other telcos will have access and contribute to the Agent Registry to prevent agents whose stalls are decommissioned from shifting to another network to operate.

Analytics, Budget & Reporting Manager, MTN, Solomon Hayford mentioned that ‘’Once an agent is blacklisted from MTN or any of the other telcos that information will be on that agent registry and will prevent that agent from coming on board on any other mobile money service providers network, once you are blacklisted you are blacklisted for the whole industry you cannot operate mobile money anywhere else in Ghana any other service provider and that initiative is been ran by the central bank’’.

He, however, added that there are systems been used to monitor and track the activities of fraudsters as well as locate their whereabouts within the country.

How to Activate the Allow Cash-Out Functionality to Enable You Withdraw Money

    • Dial *170# on your MTN handset
    • Select option 4 to turn on “allow cash-out”
    • Confirm “allow Cash-out” with your pin

We hope the introduction of the functionality along with other security measures by MTN will help curb the current #MTNMoMo fraud in the country as well as create more secure transactions on MTN Mobile Money.

  • Importance of Ghana’s Digital Addressing System to Governance

Importance of Ghana’s Digital Addressing System to Governance

Digital Addressing is a modern and revolutionary approach to allocating addresses within a defined space with the aid of the latest geocoding technology available. This type of addressing is very robust as it stands the test of time irrespective of changes in borders and environments.

GhanaPostGPS is playing a major role in its collection of data that has been compiled and formatted into a virtual map and image. GhanaPostGPS embarks on an exercise that makes it possible to identify the location of a plot or dwelling on the ground by assigning an address using a system of maps and signs that gives the numbers or names of streets and buildings.

GhanaPostGPS is Ghana’s official digital property addressing system which ensures that all locations in the country are addressed. With GhanaPostGPS, every location has a unique digital address.

    GhanaPost will be revived

The Minister for Communications, Ursula Owusu, believes that the launch of Ghana’s Digital Property Addressing System will boost the operations of the Ghana Post.

According to her, Ghana Post, which has in the last several years struggled with numerous challenges despite its prospects, will now play a key role in the roll-out of the addressing system.

“The inability to keep up with technological advances in the past bedeviled Ghana Post and almost killed it. Ironically, the technological advances of today have become the salvation and rejuvenation of Ghana Post, and this is what we are about to witness today [Wednesday],” she said at the launch of the system in Accra on Wednesday.

The launch of the digital addressing system is part of government’s grand plan of promoting effective governance through the adoption of modern technology.

Ursula Owusu remarked that the digital addressing system will unlock a new window into the area of modern technology for the country.

She added that the launch of the system will also help the country in the identification and registration of lands in the country, while banks will find it easier to locate their clients and borrowers.

Ursula, who had indicated at her ministerial vetting that her outfit will make the Ghana Post a profitable business, expressed her delight that the system, known as the Ghana Post GPS, is a partnership between a Ghanaian firm Vokacom, and the Ghana Post.

Ghana Post is a national communication and financial agency with nationwide coverage that has served its purpose for more than 5 decades.

In spite of its previous successes and dominance in the communication sector in the past, the company is currently struggling for relevance due to competition from private telecom companies, courier agencies and internet service providers.

Ghana’s Economy is on a way to be fully formalized

Processes to formalize Ghana’s economy have been given a great boost following the launch of the digital property addressing system in Accra on Wednesday.

This is the belief of the management of Ghana Post, who are partnering a Ghanaian company, Vodakom, and the Ministry of Communications to roll out the system, known as Ghana Post GPS.

The new Digital Address System, which generates unique postcodes to identify various locations in the country, gives the “business [Ghana Post] the opportunity to easily reach all Ghanaians and connect with all government agencies and other corporate networks.”

Ghana Post in a statement copied to citifmonline.com said the development will “transform and formalize the economy.”

“The National Identification Project is the second most important process of formalizing the economy. The digital address is a key requirement for registration of citizens and residents. Digital Addressing will now be the single most important tool for all citizens to locate government departments, business partners, friends, and relatives accurately and quickly. This new addressing system will change the way we do things forever, and will, therefore, lead to a formalized economy as well as change the entire business landscape,” Ghana Post said.

President Akufo-Addo at the launch said the government is committed to ensuring that the system is sustained and serves its purpose in enhancing business operations and facilitating the delivery of essential health and security services across the country.

The management of Ghana Post said every location in the country had been addressed digitally with unique codes.

“The Addressing system is nationally integrated, and it will house a comprehensive database of all properties in the country.”

“The new Post Code Range is based on the regional telephone codes used by the erstwhile Post & Telecommunications, where 02 was for Greater Accra, 05 for Ashanti and 09 for Volta, etc. Ghana Post by this has set the stage for commercial focus for the country.”

“The location system comes with all the necessary security protections including but not limited to a privacy policy protected by the Data Protection Act 843, fortified architecture, various access level controls, and an inter-ministerial data privacy committee that will monitor and ensure the security of the entire system,” it said.

The management of Ghana Post further urged the public to patronize its services as it works to bring “efficient product and services to the doorstep of Ghanaians through the digital addressing system.”
