3 reasons why I’m buying the new Huawei Y7 Prime 2018

The Huawei Y7 Prime has a 5.99-inch 1440 x 720 FullView display with 269 PPI pixel density and 18:9 aspect ratio. The device is powered by a 1.4GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor and comes with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage with the option of an expandable memory of up to 256Gigs. Y7 Prime has a 3,000mAh Li-ion battery.

Yeah, that’s all just specs. Last week. while at the Accra Mall. I happened to pass by the Huawei Shop there and spent a few minutes with the device. Well, the time spent was enough to convince me to get one.

Here are the top reasons why I will be getting the Huawei Y7 Prime 2018.

    Camera

Dual Cameras have become the norm, almost a convention and Huawei is already on that ship. Huawei Y7 Prime 2018 comes equipped with 13MP + 2 MP rear cameras. The wide-aperture feature gives DSLR like depth to your photos (those photos with a very blurred background; the ones you see off professional DSLR cameras).

I spent a great deal of time testing the front camera. I mostly find myself taking selfies always and for me, the front camera is very important in making a buying decision. The 8-Megapixel front camera was awesome. It also has a LED flashlight – which I never used, but the quality of the photos it gave out was amazing. Lots of details and great colour.

    Performance

I never had the chance to use last years Y7. However, what I do know is that it was powered by the Snapdragon 435, higher than the Snapdragon 430 processor in the 2018 model. That notwithstanding, the current 2018 model was so smooth to use. Juggling between the already installed applications, the camera, recording videos and playing them back all went well. There was no lagging or freezing.

    General Design and FullView Display

The device that I got my hands on was in Huawei’s signature blue colour. Bear in mind that the Y7 Prime 2018 comes in 3 solid colours: Black, Blue and Gold. Although the rear cover of the phone felt like it was made of plastic, the finishing and colour gave it a design, while mastering a premium look.

Then comes the 18:9 screen ration, what Huawei calls the FullView Display. 18:9 displays are perfect for multitasking using multi-window where each app is rendered in neat squares of 720 x 720 pixels each. The FullView Display, together with the bezel-less design affords the phone a modern 2018 design.

Other Great Features of the Huawei Y7 Prime 2018

    Extended Finger Print Functionality

On the Huawei Y7 Prime 2018, the fingerprint is not used to just lock or unlock the phone. It can also be used to answer calls, capture videos and photos, stop the alarm as well as browse photos.

Selfie Toning Flash, even in low light

Price of the Huawei Y7 Prime 2018 in Ghana

For all of the great features and functionalities, you would think the Y7 Prime 2018 will cost a fortune. Well, the good news is Huawei is making it possible for everyone to use this wonderful phone. With only GHS 859, you can get yourself a brand new Y7 Prime 2018 at any phone retail shop in Ghana.

In addition, you get free MTN Data – 2GB every month for the next 6 months and a gift box from Huawei.

  • Nokia X: New Smartphone set to be launched on April 27, 2018

Nokia X: New Smartphone set to be launched on April 27, 2018

After unveiling a few new smartphones at MWC 2018 – including the Nokia 6 (2018) and the Nokia 8 (pictured above)- HMD Global is now getting ready to announce yet another handset, this time called Nokia X.

Advertisements for the new Nokia X were found inside a movie theatre in China, proving their authenticity. In the posters, two Nokia smartphones could be seen placed in an X-shape. A report mentions that as per the advertisement, the Nokia X could make its way to the Chinese market on April 27.

As you can notice below, the ads seemingly show renders of the new phone forming an X. Unfortunately, that doesn’t reveal much about the device.

Rumour has it that the Nokia X will have variants with 4 GB and 6 GB of RAM, and either Qualcomm Snapdragon or MediaTek processors. It’s also said that this could be a mid-range smartphone, though that’s far from being confirmed.

At the moment, it’s not clear if this new Nokia X is a handset made for the global market (and maybe Ghana, too), or just for Asia. In any case, what’s really interesting is that, back in 2014, after Microsoft purchased Nokia’s phone division, the company released several Android-based handsets called Nokia X, although all were low-end models that failed to impress and attract customers.

Most probably, the new Nokia X has nothing to do with the old handsets. Also likely is that the X in the smartphone’s name stands for ex [exceptonal], not for ten, as it does in the name of Apple’s iPhone X. But we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

We haven’t heard anything official from the HMD Global, so the appearance of the ad is totally surprising. Maybe they want to release the phone as a surprise.

Furthermore, it is rumoured that the Nokia X might not even be a single flagship, but the new X series from Nokia. There are still some days left until the expected release date comes. Let’s see if HMD Global confirms if the phone actually exists or not.

Tecno Camon X and X Pro: Prices, Specs, Features & All you should know

The Tecno Camon X and Tecno Camon X Pro have been unveiled in Lagos Nigeria at the Tecno 2018 Global Spring Launch.

The two phones are successors to the Tecno Camon CX which was released last year.

The Tecno Camon Series is a family of camera-focused phones, but in recent times, they have also been upped to offer better productivity and the Camon X and Camon X Pro look to be towing the same line.

The main differences between the Camon X and the Camon X Pro are the display and the megapixels for the front camera.

The Camon X has a 6-inch Full Display and the Camon X Pro has a 6-inch FHD Display. Also, the front camera of the X is 20MP whereas the X Pro has 24MP, both of which take “clear selfie”.

The front camera also features an Intelligent adjustable flashlight and 3-HDR modes for portrait and group selfies.

And the very surprising one: “AI-powered” selfie beautification. Tecno is taking things to a whole new “intelligent level” with AI beautification for selfies. With this, artificial intelligence will beautify your selfies.

  • A Flagship Comeback: 4 Reasons why I’m in love with the Nokia 8

A Flagship Comeback: 4 Reasons why I’m in love with the Nokia 8

    It’s been a long while!

What we’ve all been waiting for has finally come; what Nokia fans in Ghana and around the world have been clamouring for has come. Yes! A proper flagship from arguably the most iconic mobile phone brand – Nokia!

My first phone was a Nokia, and among my friends, it’s difficult to find anyone who has not had a Nokia experience. For the past few weeks, I have had the Nokia 8 – a GHS 2,200 flagship from Nokia.

In my last post, I went hands-on with the Nokia 8. The device features an aluminium unibody design with tapered edges, giving it the looks of a flagship. The polished look matches the device’s overall smooth feel.

After 3 weeks of using the phone, here are 3 reasons why I’m totally in love with it.

    Nostalgia and the “Nokia Promise”

For a Nokia phone, one would expect nothing less than durability and ease of use.

The Nokia 8 delivers on both. during the time I’ve had it, it has dropped more than 5 times (I think it is a bit too slippery). Well, never once on those occasions did it restart, go off or hang. The screen is still intact and in very good condition.

Also, it is very easy to adjust to this phone if you are coming from another android phone or from iOS. The back, home and menu keys are lined right below the screen respectively.

Oh yeah, and did I forget to mention the startup tone? that good old Nokia tone. Still refreshing and satisfying.

Wonderful integration with the Google Assistant

I have been using the Google Pixel 2 for a while before the Nokia 8. Before then, I’ve had other phones with the Google Assistant installed on them but none of them was as smooth as the Pixel 2.

The Google Assistant is a virtual personal assistant developed by Google that is primarily available on mobile and smart home devices. It’s the equivalent of Siri on Apple Devices or Cortana on Windows Devices.

Well with the Nokia 8, the integration with the Google Assistant is wonderful. On the same level with the Pixel 2. I have had a lot of fun using the Google Assistant on the Nokia 8.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BgbDctjlirv/?taken-by=mfidie

What’s more, some very great productivity too. With the Google Assistant, you can unlock your phone (although I prefer passwords).

    A Flagship-esque Performance

When it comes to performance, you really see why the Nokia 8 is a flagship. The phone pulls off a 1440 x 2560 resolution on a 5.3-inch screen – a very sharp screen.

The Nokia 8 is powered by a Snapdragon 835 and has 4GB of RAM, which provides enough power for even graphics and memory-intensive games and apps. Day to day use of the phone is no problem with the device opening and running all the numerous apps I had installed on it with ease.

There is also the 64GB of storage and a microSD slot so you can add up to 256GB more storage if needed. Space, sorted!

Battery. On paper, the battery of the Nokia 8 doesn’t seem interesting – a mere 3,090mAh. However, in use, it is a superpower.. With moderate use, the Nokia 8 easily lasted through until the next day (always connected to wifi). Heavy users needn’t worry about charging in the middle of the day, too, as the battery has proven that it can last throughout the day.

The presence of the 3.5mm jack also meant that there were premium headsets in the box. I listened to couple of albums on Deezer and the audio was great.

Pure Android, Latest Android versions, Latest Security Updates

One thing that is taken for granted by some Android users and OEMs is security and latest software. Well, HMD Global’s Nokia 8 runs on Pure Android. No skins.

This means that you will have the latest version of Android as and when Google Makes them available. When I had the phone, it was on Android 7.1.1. in just a few minutes, it seamlessly updated to Android 8.1.0 Oreo.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/Bg3VFm7n-k-/?taken-by=mfidie

Considering the fact that big names like Samsung are just about now getting Android Oreo for the Galaxy 8, Nokia has done very well; an advantage pure android presents.

To wrap it up, the Nokia 8 feels great and provides a sweet android experience. However, I would have wished it had the ability for fast charging and the back didn’t feel so slippery (I keep dropping it). Maybe soon, HMD Global will have some cases for it.

Overall, it is good value for money, and a good comeback to begin with.

The Nokia 8 is currently selling in Ghana for GHS 2,200. It’s truly a flagship

  • On the way: Expected Specs of TECNO Camon X and X Pro

On the way: Expected Specs of TECNO Camon X and X Pro

The Camon series, TECNO’s’s camera-centric phones will see 2 new addition when the TECNO Camon X and TECNO Camon X Pro are launched in Lagos, Nigeria during the Tecno 2018 Global Spring Launch, scheduled to come off on April 5, 2018. The two phones are successors to the very popular TECNO Camon CX.

TECNO has been teasing these new devices on social media for a while now, and it is now official that it is launching on April 5th.

Expected Specs and Features of the TECNO Camon X and X Pro

    Software

We expect both devices to run the latest version of Android – Android 8.0 or Android 8.1 (Oreo) with security patches up to at least February 2018. The HiOS 3.3 UI skin should be present on the two phones as well.

    Display

Both devices are expected to be 6 inches and as shown on teaser images, we expect to see a Full-HD+ IPS Display. Oh, and don’t forget the Camon CM ushered in the 18:9 screen ratio for Tecno phones and the X and X Pro are not expected to be any different in that regard.

    Performance

The TECNO Camon X and X Pro are expected to pack in them either an Helio P23 or a Snapdragon 430. However, the Helio seems more certain. When it comes to RAM and Storage, the Camon X will have a combination of 3GB Ram + 32GB Storage space while the Camon X Pro will be slightly higher with 4GB of RAM plus a whopping 128 GB of storage.

    Camera

Oh yes, remember we said the Camon Series is a camera focused series? This means we expect a lot from the camera of the phone.

Judging from other online publications, there has been a mention of a 60 MP Camera. I don’t see how that’s possible without a major redesign of the rear of the phone unless TECNO is using technology like that of the Pure View from Nokia.

However, we expect that the rear camera of both phones will at least have a 12 + 20 MP Dual Rear Camera setup with quad-LED flash, interpolated. Another surprise will be with the front, where we expect to see a 8 MP Dual front Camera with dual LED flash.

It is expected to have some more fancy stuff with the camera, like the Blink Tech, which allows photos to be taken once a person blinks at the camera.

    Other Specs

The battery is expected to have an improvement with 4000mAh and fast charging compatible on both devices but you shouldn’t be surprised to see the usual 3000mAh as has been the case with earlier TECNO Camon phones.

    Other expected features

60MP Camera? Well, that’s what is to be expected from a few sources, but I think the basic hardware will make that very difficult for now. However, April 5 is not so far away.

Yes, there will be Facial Recognition for unlocking the phones.

I have also heard talks about a built-in liquid cooling system for the TECNO Camon X and TECNO Camon X Pro. This is something I think is unlikely. TECNO, in my opinion, will focus on devices that don’t heat up too much than one that heats up so much that it needs a cooling system. However, the feature could be introduced also for marketing gains.

Are you excited about the TECNO Camon X and X Pro? What will you like to see them offer? Leave a comment below.

Nokia 8: Hands on and First Impressions; #NokiaLovesAndroid

HMD Global’s flagship phone – the Nokia 8 was announced a few months ago. The phone has an all-aluminum body, made with the known durability and quality of the Nokia Brand in manifestation, with all the love from Android.

The Nokia 8 also has an IP54 rating which means it is dust and water resistant therefore you feel safe handling it in dusty or wet areas, including in the rain. The phone also has a 5.3” Quad HD IPS display with a 2560 x 1440 resolution, for a pixel density of approximately at 554ppi and not an 18:9 ratio like is becoming increasingly common nowadays.

The Nokia 8 will be officially available for sale on the Ghanaian market soon. Luckily for all of you Mfidie.com readers, we got our hands on the device early and we will be sharing with you hands-on and first impressions. Gear up! There will be a lot of photos.

    Design

The 13 MP Camera on the Nokia 8 is very noticeable on the front panel.

The most noticeable feature of the front panel is the 13MP selfie camera which is located at the top. There is also the speaker for calls. About the front camera, it uses a display flash for taking selfies in dark environments.

There are also very well lit Capacitive navigation buttons which are located on the lower side of the front panel, Between them is the home button that doubles as the fingerprint scanner.

At the top of the Nokia 8, there is the good old and forever satisfying 3.5mm audio jack. No need for extra apparatus to listen to your music. Very satisfying!

On the right side of the phone, there are the volume keys and the power button. The power button is conveniently placed below the volume button to allow easy access.

On the left side, there is the SIM Card slot. You can use the sim card slot in 2 ways:

    • 2 Nano Sim Cards
    • 1 Nano Sim Card and 1 SD Card

However, with 64 GB of memory and unlimited storage of your photos on Google, the first option is most appealing.

The bottom of the phone houses the Nokia OZO speakers, a USB Type-C port, and a microphone.

At the rear of the phone, there is one of the greatest features of the phone – the Carl Zeiss 13MP (color + OIS) + 13MP (Mono) dual rear cameras with dual-tone flash.

    General Usage

For the most part of today, I have been using the Nokia 8. It’s wonderful how a new phone in my hands does not feel alien to me. Like the Nokia we have known, the phone is built with the user in mind.

Maybe I would have loved for the fingerprint sensor to be at the back of the phone, but it only took a few tries for me to get used to having it on the home button.

The phone weighs just 160g and coupled with its design, it doesn’t feel like there is a 5.3″ screen sized phone in your hands. Every time I held the phone, it felt light, yet sturdy and smooth, therefore providing me with an easy to use experience.

HMD Global has given us the Nokia we know in the form of the Nokia 8 – a solid, quality user-friendly phone.

    More about the Nokia 8

The Nokia 8 is powered by Qualcomm’s flagship chipset, the Snapdragon 835, which carries the Adreno 540 GPU. What this means is that the phone will be able to run any applications, multitask and accomplish a lot of your tasks with ease.

It has 64GB of internal storage with 4GB of RAM. With these specs, it is fair to state that HMD Global is on the right track with the Flagship.

A 3,090mAh non-removable battery seems like not much on paper but with the software and my personal usage since having it, it has been good. Oh, Software! The Nokia 8 runs on Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box, but since it runs on pure Android, you should be able to upgrade yours too to Android 8.1.

The Nokia 8 will be available in two colors Ghana: Steel, and Blue.

Nokia 1 Design and Build Quality

With the price range of this phone, it is fair not to expect very stylish design. What the Nokia 1 misses in design, it makes up for in Build Quality. The Nokia 1 has a removable polycarbonate back. Behind it is the removable battery as well as the SIM and memory card slots. HMD Globa has said that Nokia offers replacement covers that come in different colours.

    Nokia 1 Software

As I mentioned earlier, the Nokia 1 runs on the latest version of Android -Android 8 (Go Edition). This especially optimized version of Android runs even on the slimmest hardware and is so whipped down that the system uses less memory. In addition, there are some Google apps in a special Go version that are also optimized for reduced resource consumption.

The phone is optimised to be smooth and fast, and comes with the app Google Go – a web search app, as well as Google Maps™, Go, YouTube™ Go and Google Assistant for Android (Go edition), to quickly send messages, make calls, set alarms and do more, simply by using voice.

Why you Should get the Nokia 1

    The Quality of Nokia Smartphones

The Nokia 1 is the champion of giving more people access to technology. With the reassuring quality and design expected of a Nokia smartphone, it keeps users connected to all their smartphone essentials and apps. With a quad-core processor, front and rear cameras, 4G connectivity and dual SIM, the Nokia 1 elevates everything Ghanaians love about feature phones in an accessible smartphone package.

Combining a removable 2150 mah battery and power-efficient IPS display, its hardware works with the optimised apps so users can make the most out of each charge.

The Nokia 1 brings back personalised style

The Nokia 1 brings a refreshingly familiar Nokia phone design featuring the iconic ‘Nokia smile’ in a fresh new package. Available globally in Warm Red and Dark Blue, users can also give their Nokia 1 a makeover thanks to the Xpress-on covers which come in a range of vibrant colours. Designed with the same attention to detail as the phone’s original cover, users can simply click on and off in seconds to express their personal style with these exchangeable covers.

All Nokia smartphones come with no bloatware, skins, UI changes or unnecessary apps pre-loaded onto the Nokia 1 phone, giving them a pure Android experience.

Android Oreo™ (Go edition) offers a smooth and responsive experience while making sure the device gets the latest security updates and features, including Google Play Protect, which continuously works to keep the Nokia 1 device, data and apps safe.

5 reasons why Samsung’s new Galaxy S9 is better than the iPhone X

During this year’s MWC, Samsung unveiled its new Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ flagship phones. The new S9 and S9+ flagship phones are not just better than their predecessors, the S8 and S8+, but they’re also better than every other handset on the planet, including the iPhone X.

So the guys at BGR have this to share:

We’ll pit the iPhone X against Samsung’s latest and greatest in a number of different ways once we get our hands on review units. Of course, we’ve already spent plenty of time with the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+, so in this post, we’ll take a look at five ways these hot new Android phones are better than Apple’s iPhone X.

    Camera

Apple’s iPhone X has one of the best cameras currently available on any smartphone. When photographing well-lit scenes, the iPhone X is capable of producing truly incredible results. It also has the best low-light performance of any iPhone Apple has ever released.

We’ve only spent a few hours with the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ at this point, but we can already safely say it’s one of the best camera phones the world has ever seen. We’ll reserve our final judgement for our review, but it’s quite possibly the best, period.

Early results from our testing suggest that photos captured on the Galaxy S9 are substantially better than similar photos captured on the iPhone X. This is true of images shot in good lighting conditions, but even more so of photos captured in low light. The Galaxy S9’s dual apertures make a huge difference in both scenarios, as does the dedicated DRAM chip. We found that noise at full zoom was substantially reduced in photos taken on the Galaxy S9 compared to iPhone X photos.

We’re definitely looking forward to spending time with this camera.

    Display

This is another area where we’ll need to spend more time with the Galaxy S9 before we declare it the outright winner over Apple’s iPhone X. As a reminder, the iPhone X features an OLED display manufactured by Samsung and tuned by Apple. Thanks to that tuning, experts have said that the iPhone X’s display is even better than any screen found on a Samsung phone.

While the overall winner remains to be named, there are two areas where we can already say Samsung has the edge over Apple.

The first is a matter of opinion: the Galaxy S9 has no notch. Some people, myself included, like the cutout at the top of Apple’s iPhone X display. It adds a unique design

    https://twitter.com/zacharye/status/907962442692440071?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&ref_url=http%3A%2F%2Fbgr.com%2F2018%2F02%2F27%2Fgalaxy-s9-vs-iphone-x-specs-top-5-features%2F

That said, there’s no question that the notch disrupts the user experience in several scenarios. Viewing photos and videos is particularly bad — you can either view them with a big chunk taken out of the size, or you can reduce the size so you’re no longer taking advantage of the phone’s entire display. The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ have no notch, of course, so this isn’t an issue.

The second area where the Galaxy S9 is a clear winner over the iPhone X is the screen-to-body ratio. Smartphone makers are battling to be the first to produce an all-screen smartphone. In fact, some companies like Apple already claim to have an all-screen smartphone. Of course, that’s a flat-out lie.

    The screen-to-body ratio on Apple’s iPhone X is about 82.9%. That means Apple’s “all-screen” iPhone is 17.1% not-screen. The screen-to-body ratio on Samsung’s Galaxy S9 is 84.2%, which means it’s more all-screen than Apple’s all-screen iPhone.

    AR Emoji

Samsung’s new AR Emoji feature is a blatant rip-off of Apple’s Animojis, which were introduced last year on the iPhone X. But there’s one feature that Samsung added to its offering that Apple hasn’t yet managed, and it’s actually pretty needed. Hilariously enough, it’s also something that was rumoured to be coming to the iPhone X ahead of its launch last year, and that might be why Samsung added it to AR Emoji.

Animoji and AR Emoji are features that let you select a character from a stable of options, and then send animations as that character. The user looks at the phone and speaks his or her message, and the character acts it out, mirroring things like facial expressions and mouth movements.

Apple’s Animoji feature is much, much better at tracking the user. There’s also far less lag with Apple’s solution. But Samsung’s AR Emoji feature includes a cool option you won’t find on any iPhone: you can make a 3D character out of yourself. Simply scan your face and the S9 creates a digital character with your likeness. Then you can send animations of yourself in more than a dozen different scenes.

    Plus

At 5.8 inches, Apple’s iPhone X display is fairly large on paper. But because the phone has a narrow aspect ratio of 19.5:9, and because of the notch, the screen doesn’t actually have as much surface as its diagonal measurement suggests. In fact, the 5.5-inch iPhone 8 Plus actually has more screen surface than the 5.8-inch iPhone X.

Samsung’s 5.8-inch Galaxy S9 has an 18.5:9 aspect ratio, so it already has more surface than the iPhone X. But some people want and even larger display, and that’s where the 6.2-inch Galaxy S9+ comes in. There is no iPhone X Plus, unfortunately, though Apple will reportedly release a plus-sized iPhone X successor later this year.

    Headphone jack

This is one of those areas where some people care and some people don’t. I, for one, don’t care. I cut the cord and switched to Bluetooth headphones years ago, long before Apple ditched the headphone jack on the iPhone 7. Many, many other people have done the same. But there are still plenty of people out there who prefer to use wired headphones, perhaps so they don’t have to worry about charging yet another device.

There’s certainly nothing wrong with that… unless you’re an iPhone user. If that’s the case, then you’ll have to use the 3.5mm to Lightning adapter Apple includes in the box with each iPhone. Or, if you want to listen and charge at the same time without using a wireless charger, you’ll need a third-party splitter.

Samsung’s Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ have dedicated 3.5mm headphone jacks, so none of this is an issue.
