  • #GH4STEM TOP 100 Teacher: Gifty Tabuaa – Bess M.A. Basic School

#GH4STEM TOP 100 Teacher: Gifty Tabuaa – Bess M.A. Basic School

The first born of six children, leadership and responsibility both came naturally to Gifty Tabuaa. While growing up, Gifty didn’t have a specific career in mind. She just wanted to become a responsible woman when she reached adulthood. She says, “Even though I found myself doing most household chores, as part of my responsibilities as the first child of the family,  and also assisting my mum in trading, my studies were never interrupted.’”

Gifty Tabuaa has been an active teacher since 2006, and is married with two daughters. Currently, her students number over one hundred and thirty.

Gifty attended Berekum Senior High School, where she studied science. At a point, after completing school, she applied to work with the Ministry of Health, in particular, the Kintampo Disease Control Unit. Unfortunately, she didn’t make the shortlist so she opted to go to St. Louis College of Education in Kumasi. After a year in school, she realized that she had made a very good choice: teaching was perfect for her. Later she was posted to an Islamic school where she taught Science and Ghanaian language.

Gifty has always loved science, and in order to improve herself, she attends workshops to enhance her knowledge. After attending a workshop on STEM, she managed to secure laboratory  equipment which has made teaching and learning of science in her school much easier. She describes this as a very motivational.

Gifty Tabuaa is currently a member of BSTEM. She joined the organisation in order to “market Science and Math to others and to train students  in Science and Maths.” She expects that this will help them realize that Science and Mathematics are not really difficult courses.

She finds teaching STEM interesting because of the real life application of scientific principles. The availability of Teaching Learning Materials also make STEM lessons practical and facilitates student learning, making the students participate actively during lessons.

When she was told of the JUNEOS challenge, she decided to focus on an experiment that would be beneficial to most residents of the town who were mainly farmers. “We chose to conduct the experiment on the water holding capacity of the three soil types in order to understand which types of crops to grow in which type of soil,” she says. She and her students selected the appropriate materials and practiced the experiment. According to Gifty, the most important lesson she has learnt from her participation in the JUNEOS Challenge is that it is very important to allow students to do practical experiments by themselves, while supervising. This unearths their hidden talents and potentials.

Gifty is also grateful to have received the right tools from JUNEOS which she is using to teach effectively. She thinks that every school should participate in the challenge because it motivates students and teachers.

In the future, Gifty Tabuaa hopes to teach at a higher level of education.

  • #GH4STEM TOP 100 Teacher: Edem Komla Dotse – Nsuta St. Paul’s R.C. JHS

#GH4STEM TOP 100 Teacher: Edem Komla Dotse – Nsuta St. Paul’s R.C. JHS

Mr. Dotse firmly  believes that STEM is interesting involves lots of practical demonstrations which makes it enjoyable for students. There was a time when, after a class using cylindrical objects to construct building foundation, some of his students approached him to get materials so they could carry on with some experiments themselves. He also recalls a practical session he had on electrical motors with his students. The next day, one student came to school with a small miniature electric motor he had made based on what he had learnt in class. Mr. Dotse describes these two events as the most inspiring experiences he has had as an educator. It’s no coincidence that during the JUNEOS challenge his students’ experiment involved electrical motor.

But how did Mr Dotse become a teacher? Initially, he had wanted to be a pharmacist. His desire to become a teacher came later, but not without some resistance from his family, who did not agree with his career choice. In order to please his family, he studied Telecommunications Engineering at a polytechnic. However, he didn’t let his dream of becoming a teacher escape. He eventually persuaded his entire family of the benefits of being a teacher and then went ahead to pursue a degree in Education at the University of Education, Winneba. He has since been teaching for the past nine years, and this is the work he intends doing for the rest of his life. Currently, he has about 150 students. His efforts have been recognized in his district, and in 2013 and 2017, he won an award as the best ICT teacher runner up and winner respectively. Speaking about his profession, Mr Dotse has this to say: “What really motivates me is seeing the students I have taught becoming great and successful people in the society.”

Edem’s main aim as a STEM educator is to impart knowledge to his students and help them progress in all aspects of their science education. In his teaching model, he achieves this aim by drawing on past learning experiences and knowledge he has acquired from the various workshops he has attended. He is therefore able to give his students the foundation they require so they can build on it when they reach Senior High School.

Mr. Dotse learnt about the JUNEOS challenge from the Regional Science Coordinator. His immediate thought was to figure out an experiment which was not only unique and captivating but would also reflect what they learnt in class. Eventually, he settled on the transformation of energy. The experiment conducted by his students involved using electrical motors to demonstrate this concept. The JUNEOS challenge has generated a lot of interest among the students and the school science club membership has increased since then.

As a child, Edem admired Professor Miriam Ewurama Addy, former host of the National Maths and Science Quiz, which was and remains his favorite TV show. When it comes to music, which he enjoys, Mr. Dotse names Stonebwoy as a favourite due to his versatility.

  • #GH4STEM TOP 100 Teacher: Mohammed Mahama – Tamale International School

#GH4STEM TOP 100 Teacher: Mohammed Mahama – Tamale International School

Meet Mohammed Mahama from Tamale International School, who has been teaching for the past twenty years and handles about one hundred and twenty students. Mr. Mahama’s childhood hero was Amitach Bachchan, an Indian actor, whose films he really enjoyed. Mohammed also loves football. His favourite celebrity player is Lionel Messi.

When Mr. Mahama was younger he wanted to become a businessman. As he grew this changed, and he hoped to be a scientist. What happened in the end, however, was that he studied Agricultural Science in secondary school, after which he enrolled in teacher training college and subsequently became a professional teacher.

Mr. Mahama draws inspiration from the fact that his students achieve greater heights by learning STEM, and he is encouraged when his students get good results in their examinations. Mr. Mahama explains that one of the benefits of being a STEM educator is that it makes him feel important in the society especially because he identifies each student and guides them through the learning process. Being a STEM educator also makes him keep abreast with new developments in the field. Mr. Mahama is currently a member of the Ghana Association of Science Teachers (GAST). He explains that being with people in the same profession educates and motivates him.

Mr. Mahama was told about the JUNEOS Challenge by his colleague. He then acquired the apparatus he needed and proceeded to prepare his students for the challenge. Their experiment involved the inflation of a balloon using carbon dioxide produced from a reaction of caustic soda. Mr. Mahama describes his participation in the challenge as a beneficial one. It has given him new teaching methods he can apply to ensure that his lessons are practicals-oriented.

He hopes that the JUNEOS Challenge will be held annually because it is interesting and educative, and hopes that the JUNEOS Team are able to continue in their endeavor to grow the interest of students in science.

  • How to Make Money online In Ghana as a student

How to Make Money online In Ghana as a student

The internet is the ultimate place that every student can take the opportunity of and make some cash whiles on studies. Today, almost all business opportunities are online.

Being a student in Ghana is not easy especially with the rise in the unemployment rate in the country which seems not to be curb anytime soon. Many successful online entrepreneurs in Ghana and the world at large started their journey during their university level. I can relate.

Somewhere in 2014, when I was in university, I faced some challenges with regards to tuition and other expenses. During that time, I was not all that acquainted with the internet money making stuff. even though I was somehow good in the tech niche by then, but I didn’t know how to use these skills to make some cash.

There comes someday when I happen to attend a seminar. This seminar was the first eye-opener to my online presence. during the seminar, I got to know there are many ways to make genuine money on the internet. After the seminar, I began to make more search and here I come today to show you some of the ways I use to make money online at that time.

These ways have proven to be my best ways and I believe you will also end up loving them whiles making the cash. But wait. I must be honest with you, your journey to making money online as a student in Ghana will require putting in extra effort otherwise, forget. If you are not going to think beyond the box and put in some dedication to the things we are going to discuss here, then just close this page and go look for other things to do. So with that being said, below are some of the ways you can make money online as a student in Ghana.

    • Creating a YouTube channel
    • Starting a blog
    • Freelancing
    • Surveys
    • Crating a course/eBook

    Creating a YouTube channel

I have always said this, YouTube is not only an entertainment site, neither is it only for information seeking. YouTube is also a money-making platform for video creators. If you should ask me today what’s my number one source of income online, I will tell you YouTube revenue. Somewhere last year, I’ve written a post on how to make money online by operating a YouTube channel. This post has gotten a lot of attention. Some of the readers do confess that they never knew one can make money on YouTube until the saw the article. You can check the article here, if you’ve not seen it before. To tell you what? YouTube was once the underrated money-making platform until recently. Many people consider the platform as their last resort. But those who already have the best idea of the platform took their chance and today they have become the top earners on YouTube.

I started my channel during my second year at university. Way back 2014, I created my channel and never even uploaded a single video. I was busy looking for other ways of making money online and never consider YouTube. Somewhere 2016, I then decided to create a video about WordPress theme. These videos turn out to be something else. The video got close to 20k within two months.

From this single video, I make the most money online. This money was what even helped me started my second source of income and that is starting a blog. So if you’re a student in the university, you can also start a channel today and who knows what the future hold for you. If you want to know more about the YouTube platform, then I recommend you to read this article.

    Starting a blog

You have found yourself on this page, reading this article free of charge. But have you wondered how this information reaches you? or do you ask yourself why on earth will someone sit and write this whole article if that person will not gain from the write-up? This I think should draw your mind back to the fact that there is a monetary gain in writing. Blogging is a life-changing venture to many students in Ghana, myself included. Today, I eat from my blog, cloth and entertainment myself through blogging. Many students are good at writing and storytelling. This should be a perfect time they should start a blog. A blog is a webpage that an individual creates and write all his personal experience or story about something for people to read. Bloggers inform, educate and entertain their readers. As a student, you can start a blog on whatever passions you. There are a lot of things to blog on in Ghana.

You can start a blog and add your voice to the already existing blogs. The only thing you must consider is the value. You must make sure you add more value to what is already out there. The good thing is that today with the availability of numerous blogging platform, anyone can start a blog within no time and begin to write on the topic of his choice. We will not look at how to create a blog here but will like to refer you to this article for that.

    Freelancing

Freelancing is now the order of the day. Previously, people didn’t understand this type of online money making job until recently. As I said earlier, I got to know about online making opportunities after attending a seminar. In that same seminar, I had a fair idea of what freelancing was. If you’re here and don’t know what freelancing is then I will take this opportunity to explain to you what is freelancing.

Freelancing has to do with doing someone’s job on his or her behalf for a reward. A freelancer is a person who does freelancing. For example, you can be a graphic designer who is been hired by a media house to design a program banner or flyer for them. A freelancer has no permeant employer. I have been doing the freelancing job for 5 years now and have gathered a lot of experience from this type of job. People all over the world contact me for the service I offer.

Today there are quite a number of freelancing sites in Ghana and the world at large. All these sites are what helps many people to get involved in freelancing jobs. As a student, using your extra time on this website will be of help to you. Even though is now difficult to break through and win a gig on most of the freelancing sites, starting a freelancing business at the university level will prepare you to a future online job.

    Surveys

Surveys have been an integral part of every organization. Companies pay people to give feedback on their products or other services they offer. Today, a lot of people earn some decent amount of money through an online survey. As a student, you can start making some cash online by taking simple surveys. There are many online surveys out there that you can sign up and start earning. we have gotten some concern from many people especially students that they have tried some of the sites and didn’t get lucky. That’s, either they reach the minimum withdrawal threshold and the providers failed to pay or they hit the threshold and they are required to do other tasks to complete the process. If you are one of those victims, then maybe the survey was never genuine from the onset. To get the best-paying survey, you can read this article.

    Create a course/eBook

When you are a student, you are endowed with nice ideas and knowledge. Instead of you using all the idea for passing an exam, you can take part of your time to write a book or create a course for your fellow students to learn. I can remember when I used to create Microsoft access templates and sell them online using some third-party websites.

Yeah, I used to be good in Microsoft access. I create database templates using this program and then sell it to final year computer students who are in need of templates to help save them time and money in creating the database a fresh. This helps me in my course of studies and you can also do that.

Look at what you are good at, draw a “To-do list”, then make some search on the idea to get more insight into what you are intending creating a course on. This I think will be a great start to you and if you take that seriously, you will end up being the ultimate winner.

    Wrapping up

Making money online as a student today needs a lot for efforts and dedication. If you’re a student looking to make money online, then I hope this article will be of help. There are many other ways to make money online as a student in Ghana but what I used and will recommend for all are the above-listed points. I’m done.

Now you have two choices, you can decide to take action by starting any of the above-listed points, or close the browser, fold your hands and wait for fortunes to locate you. The choice is yours. Thank you for your time and please help us share this article on all the social media platform you may find yourself. • Specs Comparison – Infinix S4 vs Huawei Y7 Prime (2019) vs Samsung Galaxy A20

Specs Comparison – Infinix S4 vs Huawei Y7 Prime (2019) vs Samsung Galaxy A20

Admittedly, I have not had any hands-on experience with either of the devices whose specs we’re going to be comparing today. However, that won’t stop us from tearing down the specifications of each device side by side in a bid to try and demystify which one deserves your hard-earned cash.

Like every other specs comparison, we miss out on the actual experience of the device as some might feel better than others, be heavier than others and maybe one doesn’t look as good in person as in pictures but all in all.

Here is a specs comparison of the Infinix S4, Huawei Y7 Prime (2019) and the Samsung Galaxy A20:

    Infinix Hot S4 Huawei Y7 Prime (2019)
    Samsung Galaxy A50
    Display 6.2″ 720P 6.26″ 720P 6.4″ 720P
Software Android 9.0 Pie Android 8.1 Oreo Android 9.0 Pie
    Processor Octa-core Octa-core Octa-core
    RAM 3GB 3GB 3GB
    Internal Storage 32GB 32GB 32GB
    Main Camera Triple 13MP (standard) + 8MP (ultra-wide) + 2MP (depth sensor) Dual 13MP (standard) + 2MP (depth sensor)
    Dual 13MP (standard) + 5MP (ultra-wide)
    Selfie Camera 32MP 16MP 8MP
    Battery 4000mAh 4000mAh 4000mAh
Price TBD GHS 829 GHS 1599

    Verdict

The truth is, the Infinix S4 is the clear overall winner especially when it comes to the cameras and price – which undercuts the competition in this segment. However, as good as things look, Infinix user experience has proven to be a pain in the past with the company introducing ads within its home screen in the form of app suggestions, something that has not pleased a lot of users.

If you are looking for a better software experience with a little sacrifice on the camera performance, the Samsung Galaxy A20 should be your choice. Samsung’s new UI is really intuitive and the company has made the right steps into improving their user experience. As mentioned, the only problem will be the cameras, to be specific, the selfie camera.

As for the Huawei Y7 Prime (2019), there’s really nothing good going for it compared to the two. Actually, the device seems to be lagging behind thanks to its outdated software and on top of that, it commands the highest price. Unfortunate for the Huawei device, even its beautiful design that we would have praised as a selling point, has been replicated on the Infinix S4.

Huawei Y7 2019: Review, Price, Specs, Features and Best Deals

China’s smartphone giant is trying to capture each specific payscale in regards to Ghana’s smartphone market. Their flagship the Mate 20 Pro received a great deal of praise Internationally and domestically.

The Y7 Prime 2019 is another attempt to stay in touch with the mid-tier smartphone market. Whether the phone has the capability to do that, we shall see but first, let’s take a look at the device.

With a 4,000 mAh battery, 6.26 inch LCD display, the device is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 chip, 3 GB RAM, 13MP dual camera and a 16MP selfie camera.

    Huawei Y7 2019 Specs Highlight

    • Resolution: 720×1520 pixels
    • Chipset: Qualcomm SDM450 Snapdragon 450 (14 nm)
    • RAM: 3GB
    • OS: Android 8.1(Oreo) with EMUI 8.2
    • Storage: 32GB
    • Front Camera: 16 MP; HDR,
    • Rear Camera: 13-megapixel + 2-megapixel
    • Battery Capacity: 4000mAh
    • Price Range: $150

    Design

With rounded edges on the backside of the device, the 6.26-inch display seems surprisingly bigger than it actually is. The width of the device wider than most screen examples out there.

The display could have been even larger if the full-screen model was applied but with the way the width is extended, it doesn’t seem like a miss. The screen is also always slightly bigger than that of the Y7 Prime 2018. (5.99-inch)

The LCD display, of course, doesn’t have the resolution of an OLED display but that’s not something we expected.

A downside of the design includes the lack of a USB-C port. Fast charging is slowly becoming a necessity for most smartphone users. Other competitors for devices of this price range have not yet taken the USB-C step so far so the company doesn’t lose much in this regard but users would ideally want the fast charging option.

The Aurora blue colour is a delight to see. The shine and gloss on the backside of the smartphone make it an aesthetically attractive smartphone. It may be a little susceptible to a few smudges given the shine but that’s just something that cant be avoided. Huawei has always experimented with visually attractive colours that are different from the more commonly applied colours.

    Performance

With 3GB of RAM and the Snapdragon 450 chipset, the device boasts a good performance level. We would have liked to have a 4GB RAM in the device but 3GB seems to be the norm given the price range.

The EMUI 8.2 skin certainly supplements the Android Oreo software pretty well.

One interesting feature includes the Face recognition software installed. Usually, you wouldn’t expect Face ID for a device of this price range, however, Huawei has managed to get some of more high-end features into mid-tier devices. Performance as a whole remains decent although we expected a few more changes to the usual norm set recently.

    Camera

With a 16MP + 2MP AI camera with f/1.8 aperture, the device boasts a decent photo output. With an AI impact, the picture quality improves based on the subject. Of course, the camera isn’t as good as some of Huawei’s high-end models but for its tier, the quality is decent.

There is a certain emphasis on low-light and HDR performance in line with the general direction Huawei has taken towards its Camera quality. The camera keeps that trend intact with the pictures that were taken in low light standing out.

Pricing and Availability of the Huawei Y7 2019

The Huawei Y7 2019 is available to pre-order in Ghana at GHS 829 from now till the 28th of February 2019.

    Conclusion

The device checks most of the right boxes for its price. the problem for us is the change in perception.

A year ago, we would be satisfied with this device but for anyone who has used the Mate 20 Pro or the P20 Pro will struggle to understand Huawei’s mid-range devices and will always find faults just because they’ve been exposed to something better. It simply means Huawei can’t be classified as a mid-tier expert anymore with the company seriously improving their high-end game.

All in all, for the Y7 Prime 2019, the price definitely helps the company stay in touch with the mid-tier smartphone market.
