  • What exactly are the cores of a Computer?

What exactly are the cores of a Computer?

I remember when I wanted to get a new laptop, all I was concerned about was the “core number” i.e.core i3 vs core i5 because the more cores I got the faster I thought the laptop would be and so I bought a core i7.

However, there’s more to a computer’s performance than the number of cores or the clock speed as used some years ago and this article serves to demystify all questions and doubts.

What is the core in the CPU? Simply put, it is the basic unit of the CPU that runs the programs. The more CPUs or cores a computer has, the more things it can do at once, helping improve performance on most tasks. Most computers now have CPUs with multiple cores (core i5 = 5 cores) which makes the computer even faster.

(Hyperthreading is a technique used to double the number of cores by creating virtual cores to boost CPU performance. It makes a dual-core CPU with hyperthreading faster than its counterpart but still less than a quadcore CPU )

So does that mean that core i7 machine is faster than a core i5, most of the time, yes but here are a few other determining features for computer performance example the ram size, hard drive type and size?

Basically, Random access memory, or RAM, is the temporary holding spot for data. Thus the higher the RAM the more stuff you can process without having to go to the much slower hard drive. This means multitasking would be smoother and the overall user experience more enjoyable.

RAM specs are listed in terms such as DDR3-1600. The number after the dash refers to the number of transfers the chip can handle ( 16 GB for the example given). The higher the number, the faster the memory is, and the more memory you have installed, the more transfers it can handle.

The hard drive size used to be the defining factor in the performance of the laptop but with the emergence of the Solid-state Drives (SSD), this changes the game. SSD’s are 8 times faster than the old hard disk drive so the choice of drive also matters. Also the larger the hard disk size, the faster the PC.

With all that said, the ultimate PC would be a 9th Generation core i9, 32 Gb of RAM and 1 TB of SSD which costs $4,499 or 23,847 cedis ( MSI GT75 Titan 4K-071 ).

In reality, not everyone can but even if everyone could, not everyone can use it to its maximum capacity. If you hardly do anything strenous like gaming or video editing then a 9th generation core i3 would be enough. Also older older generation flagships can aslo do the same (7th gen core i7) and you can get 12-15 hours of video playback time.

The core i5 set of laptops are for main stream users. Those who go everywhere with their laptops with some light gaming. The high end gamers can settle with the core i7. (There is a core ix for the very extreme gamers. )

Inevitably, people who want to own a core i7 pc are concerned about the graphics card and we can’t talk about graphics card without talking about GPU. A graphics processing unit (GPU) is a computer chip thatis used primarily for the purpose of rendering images.

GPU is able to render images more quickly than a central processing unit because of its parallel processing architecture, which allows it to perform multiple calculations at the same time. It is mostly used to enhance gaming. A GPU of 520 and above is great to run fifa 18 and other demanding games. You can always buy an additional GPU to better your gaming.

The performance of a PC really goes beyond just the number of cores and for an optimum experience, the RAM, Hard disk size and GPU all factor in.

  • What we learnt from the Galaxy Unpacked 2019 event

What we learnt from the Galaxy Unpacked 2019 event

Ladies and Gentlemen, tech enthusiasts, the most anticipated smartphone of the year have been revealed and it was definitely worth the wait. A broader look at the event, makes the Samsung event look like a direct response to Apple with the release of three new phones, earbuds with wireless charging and the new galaxy watches. Here are the main features of the Galaxy unpacked.

The earbuds are a more revamped version of Apple’s air pods and come with much anticipated wireless charging cases and give 6 hours of use per charge. The fact that the core of the sound system was built by AKG means the sound can be guaranteed to be epic, to say the least. The ergonomic design ensures the earbuds don’t fall out during vigorous exercise but have a nice aesthetic look to them The seamless and easy connection to the tab 5se shows that it’s going to work for mainly Apple devices and that Samsung is keen on building its own ecosystem to rival Apple.

The new galaxy watches, fully expected to be introduced in combination with galaxy fit shoes but then failed to arrive at the party may be debuted at the Mobile World Congress scheduled for next week. The watches arrive in two forms; the action for an everyday look and the fit for the gym gang. Both watches are extremely lightweight, slim come with water resistance and a week of use per single charge as a really cool add on. A heart rate count is an added functionality and then there is stress measurement (a feature the Garmin Vivoactive 3 came with last year ) which is supposed to help you keep down stress. Basically, the watches check all the boxes and are only differentiated from in each other in looks.

    The Samsung Galaxy S10

A look at this phone and clearly you can see that Samsung did their homework on this design after low s9 sales. With an all-new dynamic AMOLED, a right-sided Infinity O display cutout(which houses the front camera) and a 6.1” edge to edge side to side, the phone looks absolutely gorgeous with a firm touch. The leaks pretty much got everything right but seen up close and in better image quality just reiterates the stunning design.

Samsung is pretty much unrivalled in terms of display and an HDR10+ screen with 42% less blue light and 551 PPI just solidify Samsung’s hold on the crown. The images showed appear to be much brighter in colour and more vibrant. An all-new ultrasonic(faster and safer) fingerprint scanner is also in the display rather than at the back in previous models. The back of the phone comes in 3 other variants(prism black, prism blue, flamingo pink and prism green and yellow) and has a ceramic black or white variant for the higher end 12 GB/ 1TB option/

The back of the phone has a new ultrawide 16-megapixel lens with an angle of 123 degrees which is pretty great for taking landscape photos in addition to the telephoto lens for better zoom and the regular 12-megapixel camera. Reverse Power share is a feature that allows you to wirelessly charge another device from the back of the phone. It was first seen in the Huawei Mate 20 Pro but is also included in the new S10 as well which is very handy.

The S10 E comes at $750 ( same as iPhone XR) while the base option for the S10 starts at $900 and the S10 plus with a double front camera starts at $1000 which is by no means cheap considering the Dollar-Cedi rate.

The icing on the cake was the Galaxy Fold which is a 4.6” display when folded but a 7.3” tablet when opened up. The phone allowed 3 app multitasking with a seemingly smooth experience even when changing from the single screen to the double screen. The 5G S10 was also shown with a bigger 6.7” display but with all the base specifications.

And that rounds up the Galaxy Unpacked. Next stop, Mobile World Congress. Until then, please subscribe for more Tech news.

  • Music streaming service SoundCloud has over 200m tracks – 5X that of Spotify

Music streaming service SoundCloud has over 200m tracks – 5X that of Spotify

SoundCloud announced in a blog post today that the 200 millionth track has been uploaded to the platform.

Artist Francesca Lombardo’s ‘Eye Ring’ became the 200 millionth track uploaded to the audio-streaming service. SoundCloud celebrated the milestone with an interview with Lombardo, suggesting that her song is “actually a prime example of the boundary-pushing content that SoundCloud is known for”.

The track-count has grown from 170m at the end of 2017 (according to SoundCloud’s recent financial results) – so 30m tracks were uploaded to the service in 2018 and early 2019.

For her part, Lombardo – who has nearly 50,000 followers on the service – had warm words for SoundCloud. “I’ve worked hard to keep a steady release of music over the years, across other labels and my own, as I always want my fans to come back to something new,” she said. “SoundCloud is also a great place to archive my mixes, radio shows and remixes that have happened over the years, which I think gives a good representation of how I have evolved and what I do as an artist across my various projects.”

As the world’s largest open audio platform, SoundCloud hosts such diverse audio as Chance the Rapper’s first mixtape, the entire NASA historical audio library and BTS’ Jimin’s record-breaking track.

  • An itsy-bitsy look at what to expect in Tech in 2019

An itsy-bitsy look at what to expect in Tech in 2019

From phone companies copying Apple’s notch design to widely leaked pixel 3, 2018 came with its fair share of interesting mobile technology and with flagship phones being released every year, 2019 is likely to follow the same trend. From Mobile World Congress to Tech October, here are some of the most anticipated events of 2019.

    Mobile World Congress

This is the hub where all good things mobile phones and accessories are showcased and it happens every year in Barcelona and this year is scheduled for the 25th to the 28th of February.

With so many leaks, perhaps the highlight of the show will be the Samsung Galaxy S10. With the hope of 3 models to be released and almost no bezels, the hype is well deserved. We would also see many phones with less and fewer bezels. Wearables also made their way to MWC and we might have Google watch or an update to Wear OS. Who knows?

    Health Tech Summit

With the launch of smartwatches, the health sector has been revolutionized as heartbeats can be tracked almost all the time instead of once a month at the doctor’s and calorie intake and burn can be measured day by day just to name a few. Health Tech summit shows the world major advancements in this emerging tech zone and is definitely an event to keep an eye on.

    Tech October

Tech October can be broken down into 3 companies: Apple, Google and Microsoft.

    Microsoft

Each year Microsoft release its Surface Pro’s, Surface Laptops and the Surface books which have been received with much success and 2019 promises to be more exciting.

    Apple

Not too much to be said here as this is probably what most people are waiting for. However, we would see whether Apple would still the notch and form factor of the iPhone Xs or change for a no notch form. We would also anticipate the new iPads and hopefully Airpods 2.

    Google

Every year, the pixel holds the crown for the worlds best smartphone camera and we would see if this is the case for 2019. We would also see Android 10/Q rolling out and we live to see what new things it might bring. The Pixel slate might get a retouch or be discontinued, we never know.

Somewhere along the line, we might see Huawei bring out its weapons into the smartphone world. The Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro were well received and Huawei may just continue that trend.

Other companies to look out for are Oneplus and Xiaomi who always bring great budget phones into the market. Oneplus is reportedly working on a 5G phone which is definetely a phone to look out for. Gaming phones, which are a promising market may also have some new additions to their line-up and that will be great to see.
