While much of the recent crypto-related news headlines have focused on the softer Bitcoin price, the interest in Bitcoin in Africa has continued to grow at a rapid pace.
Paxful, the world’s leading cryptocurrency-marketplace, reports that its total number of transactions from African consumers amount to roughly $64,357,115 per month. Nigeria and Ghana rank alongside giants like the United States, United Kingdom and Canada on Paxful’s list of top 10 markets internationally.
The African continent accounts for the highest number of new subscribers to the portal per month. The appetite for cryptocurrency is widespread. Over the past year, transactions on the Paxful platform from South Africa increased by 25%, by 60% in Nigeria and by up to 100% in other parts of the continent.
For Africa as a whole, Paxful has seen a 225% increase in users in the last 12 months.
Millennials Drive The Future
The demand for cryptocurrency is notably characterized by a marked increase in the 18-30 age group. Lagos, Akure, Abuja, Benin City, and Accra stand out as the leading centres of Bitcoin commerce in Africa.
The average bitcoin purchase is $60, while the average Paxful wallet transaction is currently under $30.
Many parts of the continent are already au fait with mobile money payment systems. African millennials are finding that cryptocurrencies offer alternative convenient and cost-effective access to the global financial system.
A Peer-To-Peer Revolution
Africans are using cryptocurrency to satisfy both personal finance needs and entrepreneurial ventures; transferring goods, services, and money domestically as well as globally.
For some, virtual currencies have the benefit of acting as a hedge against constantly fluctuating local bourse. Virtual currencies also serve as an effective and more profitable alternative to their local currency.
People tend to use them to buy goods and in return, merchants may double their profit since the price of bitcoin tends to fluctuate.
There is also an emerging generation of Africans buying crypto as investment vehicles into promising blockchain start-ups. A relatively small number of Africans trade digital currencies speculatively for profit.
“The adoption of Bitcoin across the globe re-affirms our belief that crypto will take its place as a mainstream financial system. As has been the case with other disruptive financial tech innovations like mobile money, Africa is leading the peer-to-peer financial revolution. Our aim is to continue to partner with consumers to expand access the global financial system.” Ray Youssef, CEO of Paxful.
“As a company, we’ve learned a lot from African consumers. For instance, we’ve improved our mobile capabilities to cater to the widespread use of smartphones on the continent. Our experience in Africa has strengthened our capability to serve consumers regardless of geographical location or origin.” Artur Schaback, CTO Paxful.
Vodafone Ghana has officially reached an agreement with the National Communications Authority (NCA) for the purchase of one slot of the 2×5MHz frequency spectrum in the 800MHz band for mobile services.
The slot, purchased at the cost of US$30million, was awarded to Vodafone following successful financial negotiations with the NCA, in line with the Authority’s published programme for the bid process. The award paves the way for Vodafone to operate an LTE 4G spectrum frequency to enhance the user experience for its customers.
Commenting, Yolanda Cuba, Chief Executive of Vodafone Ghana, said:
“We are excited that after three years of persistent constructive engagement with the regulator and policymakers, we now have the opportunity to operate an LTE 4G licence in Ghana. We are happy that our customers will finally experience faster data speed starting next year. Vodafone is committed to continuously work with the regulator to promote digital inclusion in the country, for which the 4G spectrum will play a critical role. It will also enable Vodafone to work with the government on its agenda of digitising Ghana’s economy.
I would like to thank our shareholders – the government of Ghana which has 30 per cent shares, and Vodafone Group with 70 per cent shares in Vodafone Ghana – for their commitment to our operations and their support in our quest to deploy 4G in Ghana. With such a strong partnership between our shareholders, Vodafone Ghana is optimistic about a great future for our customers and the country”.
Vodafone believes that the access to 4G spectrum that it has now will contribute to its vision of igniting Ghana’s digital revolution. The company is set to commence an active technical process in the coming weeks to align its infrastructure to deliver 4G to its customer base early next year. The licence also highlights a positive end to the year for Vodafone Group, which is celebrating a decade of existence in Ghana’s telecoms industry.
A new passport application centre has been commissioned to enable Ghanaians to acquire passports in a short period.
The new Premium Passport Application Centre which is located at the Accra Digital Centre will enable applicants to go through the passport application process within 30 minutes but at an additional charge of GHS 50.
The move is a collaboration between government and international company, VFS Global, to address the cumbersome processes which have characterized passport applications in Ghana.
According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, similar facilities will be established in other parts of the country to make passport acquisition more convenient.
“The Ministry is still committed that additional passport offices are established in each region to ensure that each Ghanaian has easy access to apply for their passport in every regional capital in Ghana without necessarily travelling outside their respective regions.
“It is against this backdrop that the ministry through the approval of cabinet has engaged the services of VFS Ghana Limited, a specialized business process outsourcing agency to provide front offices for receiving online passport application. This is aimed at providing the Ghanaian public with the option of improving with respect to online passport application in a seamless convenient manner,” the Foreign Minister said.
How the Passport Centre will operate
Madam Ayorkor Botchwey also outlined the process by which Ghanaians who want to use the premium service will have to undergo.
“Passport applicants who want to use this service, will go through the vetting and do their passport applications as usual. They will fill the form online, be vetted and then be given an appointment date. Afterwards, all their data will be captured and then they will make payment of GHS 50 and GHS 100 for standard and the premium services respectively”.
“It is just another passport office just like the one we have at the old Ministry of Foreign Affairs office. Everything will be done so it goes through the superior vetting at the regional office and then the passport booklet is issued. So, it is the same process we have at our passport offices. This is to give Ghanaians many more options to acquire their passports”, she added.
In November 2018, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration announced that Ghanaians can now acquire passport forms online.
This change was announced among what appears to be a series of reforms in the acquisition of passports.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the forms which used to cost between GHS 50 and GHS 100 and mostly sold in the banks will now be free.

Fameko, a Ghanaian ride-hailing platform has been launched in Accra with special offers for both drivers and riders.
Speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb, the Chief Executive Officer, Kofi Agyapong said the Fameko Taxi App offers services like Fameko Luxury where car rental companies can acquire luxury cars for individuals or groups for their trips.
He said there is a driver recruitment service where drivers are recruited for companies upon their request.
“If you are an individual and you need our services, we can give you competent drivers,” he added.
In addition to the above services, Mr Agyapong said there are insurance and vehicle tracking packages for drivers and vehicle owners who sign up to the Fameko Taxi App.
For customer security, he explained there is a system where Fameko monitors the movement of their drivers and know their whereabouts and what is happening to them.
Mr Agyapong touted Fameko as the only online Taxi service designed to give drivers flexible charges in terms of rate as well as protection to the drivers.
“We are able to track their identity if anybody cause harm to the driver or there is a theft on any issue, we can be able to track and know where the person is,” he explained and added, “Drivers are assured of competitive fares where customers pay by cash or mobile money.”
Fameko according to Kofi Agyapong offers drivers pre-paid services where they will are permitted to load their Fameko Taxi Wallet with cash to prevent issues of drivers owing the Taxi App Company.
Drivers who were at the launch also expressed their excitement of having a Ghanaian-owned service transport App with lower charges and flexible payment terms.
According to them, “Fameko has proven to listen to the concerns of drivers and we expect them to give a great competition to the others who are already in the system.”
The Fameko Taxi app is available on iOS and Android.
Ecobank Ghana in its effort to work around the cash-lite and financial inclusion mentioned by the government has taken a step further to launch Ecobank Xpress Money Promotion as an incentive to provide an enabling financial environment for sustained economic growth.
Ecobank Xpress Account is needed to give Ghanaians the platform to transact business and make payments across 34 countries online.
According to the Managing Director of Ecobank Dan Sackey, the Xpress Account is “one of the surest ways by which we can contribute to making Ghana a cash-lite, society.”
“If the country does not need to print note of currency, we are saving the resources of the country. It is a must that Ghanaians engage in cash-lite economy and indeed cashless communities,” he urged.
Speaking at a press launch, Mr. Dan Sackey said the Ecobank mobile application sets the pace in the banking sector to take in Ghana’s unbanked population; adding that the financial inclusion campaign requires a concerted effort and cannot be done alone.
The Ecobank Express Account is a self-service, real-time, online digital account or wallet that is easily operated on the mobile phone.
With a registered SIM, one can download the Ecobank Mobile App, open an Ecobank Xpress Account instantly and start transacting business.
“Currently, you can withdraw or deposit money into your Xpress account from any of the over 1,500 designated Ecobank Xpress Point locations around the country. You can also send and receive money to and from any bank account or mobile money wallet in Ghana as well as send and receive money across the 34 countries we operate within Africa,” Mr Sackey stated.
Explaining how the promotion works, Head of Consumer Banking at Ecobank, Tara Squire said a deposit of Ghc50 or more into the Ecobank Xpress Account at any Xpress Point gives the customer the chance to win their share of over Ghc500,000 in cash and instant airtime or data.
“The Ecobank Xpress Money Promotion is aimed at rewarding customers with a deposit of Ghc50 or more. Every week, 133 customers will be rewarded and a deposit of Ghc50 into your Xpress Account gives you one slot and so the more the money, the more your chance to win big. First deposit attracts instant reward in the form of airtime or data. The interest rate on this promotion is 4 percent and it is running now up to March 8, 2019,” he explained.
He reiterated that the launch is a mass drive aimed at encouraging customers and the public to use the Ecobank Xpress Account for payments in place of cash transactions; thus the Xpress Point has created job opportunities for Ghanaians.
“Non-customers are encouraged to open the Ecobank Xpress Account instantly, fund it and use it for transactions for cash prizes as the promotion lasts for 3 months,” he added.
Artificial intelligence is steadily making its way onto our smartphones and may be a key feature in the next one year.
Many devices released in the past few months, from the new Google’s Pixel phones to Apple’s recent releases have included AI-focused hardware and software. These phones use AI in all sorts of clever ways, from imaging and photography to power efficiency and security.
Those who have not been in the AI game are expected to soon introduce smartphones with special functions and if rumour flying around turns out to be true, Africa’s number one mobile phone brand TECNO Mobile might be preparing to release its first AI-powered smartphone into the market.
While no much details have been so far revealed about the upcoming smartphone with AI-capability, there are indications that the said smartphone will come from the Camon Series and will be available in two variants just like the Camon X/X Pro. Both devices will feature one of a kind AI-Beautification, AI-HDR, AI-Bokeh, AI-Selfie.
The Camon line of devices are primarily focused on photography, though we were not privy to the full specs of both devices, the leaked images we got is pointing in the direction of four cameras, Dual 16-Megapixels at the back and 25-Megapixels + 5-megapixels AI-powered front cameras that will come with the ability to capture clear selfie.
Also, With the integrated AI-algorithm, the cameras will be able to recognize up to 250 different kinds of faces, scenes, Food, nature and animal.
So if everything goes as the rumour suggests, the upcoming devices will launch this November in Lagos, Nigeria. While we are excited about the possibility of an AI-powered smartphone from TECNO Mobile, the question remains – Can TECNO pull off the AI thing.
Facebook-owned instant messaging platform WhatsApp has finally added the Stickers feature allowing users to send different stickers while chatting just like other instant messaging apps.
In the latest update version 2.18, users can now see a new option in the emoji section of the app called Stickers. In the beginning, only one sticker pack comes pre-installed with the update.
However, the built-in sticker store gives the option to download more, the store also has the option to download stickers from the Google Play Store.
Though several third-party sticker packs are available, it still lacks some good stickers that you might want to use.
So why not create your own stickers and use it. Well, if you are looking for creating your own stickers, follow our step-by-step guide.
Pre-requisites:
The latest version (2.18) or above of WhatsApp
Working internet connection
First step: Creating an image with no background
The first thing you are supposed to do is click your images with the expressions you want and convert it to PNG file format with no background.
To do that open your smartphone camera and click some images and now let’s convert them into PNG file format with no background and then will add them to WhatsApp.
So here’s how to convert your pictures into PNG with a transparent background or no background.
Now, open any image you want to convert into Sticker
Erase the background and crop it accordingly
Save the image in PNG format (as WhatsApp only supports PNG format for Stickers)
Note: Create at least three images as WhatsApp does not allow to add a Sticker pack with less than three images in it.
If you have completed the steps mentioned above, download another app called ‘Personal Stickers for WhatsApp’.
Download the app and open it, you can use this link.
The app will automatically detect all the stickers you have created
Tap on the ‘Add’ button located beside the sticker
Again tap on ‘Add’ option when asked
Once done, open WhatsApp and head to the Stickers section by tapping on the Emoji icon from the left of the text box.
Select the Stickers option and look for the stickers you have added. Tap on it to send.
iPhone Users
At the time of writing, there are no external sticker apps that use this new feature on iOS. As soon as we know of a sticker app or one becomes available, you will be able to get them from the App Store.
If you still want to enjoy this, get an Android and have some fun.
Huawei has enjoyed tons of plaudits in recent times for premium smartphones such as the Mate 10 Pro and the P20 Pro, but what about if you need a phone that is easier on the wallet?
Well, the Chinese manufacturer does a brisk business selling low and mid-range handsets aimed at the budget conscious consumer. One such device is the Y9 that sports a notchless 5.93-inch FHD+ display, dual camera setups front, a massive 4,000mAh battery, and a GHS 1099 price tag.

Look, Feel and Performance of the Huawei Y9
Design
Huawei has given the Y9 a quality metal unibody design that feels reassuringly good in the hand and defies the notion that this is a budget-minded handset.
The phone is comfy to hold thanks to its rounded edges, and the metallic design means that the Y9 isn’t as slippery as a bar of soap, nor does it turn into a fingerprint magnet, unlike phones with an all-glass design. The finish is a little reminiscent of the Honor 7X that launched back in 2017, which is no bad thing in itself.
The Y9 follows the standard layout found on Huawei handsets with the volume controls sitting above the power button on the right-hand side. Fans of the audio jack will be happy to note that there is a 3.5mm port on the bottom of the device to the left of the MicroUSB charging port.
Performance
While OLED is pretty much the benchmark when it comes to smartphones, the 5.93-inch IPS LCD on the Y9 provides good viewing angles and colours are vibrant enough although the screen is a little on the warm side. This can be adjusted in the Display settings by choosing between Default, Warm, and Cold, although you can customize this even further if you wish.
Sporting a Kirin 659 octa-core processor and 3GB of RAM, the Y9 isn’t the speediest handset you’ll ever use but considering its GHS 1099 price tag performance is more than useful.
Apps and games opened quickly enough although the phone does get a little sluggish when there are loads of apps open or if you get too tab happy when using the Chrome browser. We don’t place too much stock in benchmarking apps, but we’ve run the Huawei Y9 through Antutu and Geekbench 4 with the results below.
In terms of connectivity, the Y9, unfortunately, lacks NFC which means that it is incompatible with Google Pay. With slots for both dual-SIMs and a MicroSD card, you can enjoy dual-SIM connectivity and expand the phone’s storage with a MicroSD card simultaneously.
Software
If you’ve used a Huawei or Honor handset from recent times, you’ll already have a good idea of what to expect from the EMUI interface. The Y9 runs Huawei’s EMotion UI interface v8.0 running atop of Android Oreo 8.0 which brings a whole host of additional features with it. While we’ve seen the newer EMUI 8.2 appear on handsets such as the Mate 20 Lite, EMUI 8.0 is still a vast improvement over previous versions.
When setting the phone up for the first time, you’ll find that the app drawer is disabled by default, you can avoid this iOS-like experience by merely delving into Settings, Display, and toggling the Home Screen Style to ‘Drawer.’
There are a few pre-installed apps that include Netflix, Instagram, Messenger, Booking.com, Z Camera, as well as a few games such as Asphalt Nitro, Dragon Mania, Kingdoms, Puzzle Pets, and Spider-Man, all of which can be uninstalled, so there’s nothing to get worked up about.
If EMUI isn’t quite your bag, you can always install a third-party launcher such as the Nova or Pixel launcher to customize your home screen the way you prefer.
Huawei phones are known for having quick and accurate fingerprint readers, and the Y9 doesn’t disappoint with its easily accessible sensor on the rear panel below the dual camera setup. You also have the option of setting up facial recognition to unlock the phone, and the experience is surprisingly good, it unlocks the phone in an instant.
Battery
With a big 4,000mAh battery, you might expect the Huawei Y9 to get through the average day with comparative ease, and you would be correct in that assumption. The combination of the big battery coupled with a Full HD+ display and a chipset that sips power results in the ability to get two days of usage with around 6 hours of on-screen time, without getting to single digits.
If you need even more battery life, you can enable power-saving features such as Power Saving Mode and Ultra Power Saving Mode to go event further between charging sessions. You can even reduce the screen resolution from 2160 x 1080 to just 1440 x 720 so that the GPU doesn’t draw quite as much power to eek out some extra battery life.
Of course, when the battery is eventually flattened you are left with charging it back up via the MicroUSB port which is nowhere near as quick as Huawei’s proprietary SuperCharge technology seen on the company’s flagship devices. After a couple of hours, though, the battery is fully recharged, and the Y9 is ready to go again.
Camera
The Y9 sports a total of four cameras with two on the front and two on the back. The back pair consists of a 13MP sensor with f/2.2 aperture and Phased-Detection-Auto-Focus (PDAF) while the accompanying 2MP sensor provides depth-of-field information for those bokeh and portrait shots.
The specifications are impressive, and in real-life, the rear cameras produce more than acceptable results. The f/2.2 aperture of the main 13MP sensor means that low-light and night shots aren’t as amazing as what the P20 Pro would produce, but they are still very serviceable and good enough for social media purposes.
The front pair includes a 16MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture along with a 2MP sensor to again provide depth-of-field information when taking selfies in portrait mode. As with the rear camera setup, the front cameras produce images that are perfectly fine for sharing on social media. If you fancy yourself to be the next David Bailey you may need something a little more powerful and a whole lot more expensive.
Pricing and Availability of the Huawei Y9
Price of the Huawei Y9 in Ghana
The Huawei Y9 is available to buy in Ghana starting from 9th November 2018. Here are the shops you can get from and their prices.
The Huawei Y9 (2019) costs $250 in Nigeria, Kenya and other regions.
Conclusion
With similar specifications to the Honor 7X but with dual camera setups front and rear and a massive 4,000mAh battery, the Huawei Y9 brings increased camera chops and up two days of battery life to the table for just GHS 1099.
On the downside, the Y9 makes do with a MicroUSB 2.0 charging port, and NFC is missing altogether which means users won’t be using Google Pay. However, the Y9 has a solid metal design, a quality IPS display, adequate performance, handy dual cameras, an audio jack, and the incredible battery life that we’ve found so impressive.
The Huawei Y9 meets almost all of the requirements you might want in a smartphone, especially when you consider the GHS 1099 price tag. If you can live with EMUI, the Huawei Y9 is a serious alternative to the similarly priced Moto G6.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has advised Ghanaian passport applicants to use the online application service following complaints of a shortage of the paper-based (manual) passport Application Forms at commercial banks.
The online application service is part of an e-Government strategy, which is targeted at ensuring the use of information technology to provide citizens with efficient and effective passport services through a secure, fast and convenient means.
It is also aimed at injecting efficiency and reliability in passport service delivery and eliminate the existing difficulties that have bedevilled passport acquisition in Ghana.
In a statement issued in Accra on Thursday, November 1, 2018, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it has followed public concerns that there was a shortage of the manual forms in the system.
Statement from the Ministry of Finance
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has taken careful note of public concerns regarding Passport acquisition in the country and has therefore resolved as follows:
