  • Heads Up! MTN to start giving flash SMS notifications on bundle usage

Heads Up! MTN to start giving flash SMS notifications on bundle usage

MTN Ghana has come under pressure in recent times over how “quickly” their bundle disappears. Last week, a friend told me how her 2GB of data just vanished in a day.

Well, personally, I don’t believe data can just vanish, except in some rare scenarios where there have been genuine mistakes from telcos (some of which never really get solved), the secret to how fast your data is consumed lies in your browsing habits. We shared tips on how to prevent some apps from using all your data.

For example, I asked this friend to check her data usage to see which apps were actually responsible for her loss. The result – WhatsApp had used over 2GB in just a few days.

Since the introduction of the status feature, WhatsApp has been consuming a lot of data and lots of people don’t even realise. The truth is that a video status lasting for 30 seconds is averagely 20MB per the videos I post on my status. Watching just 5 of these videos will set you back around 100MB.

Why all this explanation when we are talking about flash notification on bundle usage?

Well, for starters, before this, MTN does not give indications as to when your bundle is getting finished. Networks like Vodafone and the then Airtel (now AirtelTigo) inform you when your bundle is being used. There are notifications for 50% usage, 90% usage, etc so you have a fair idea how much data you have remaining.

These notifications help to keep a subscriber in check, hence the good news that MTN will send Class 0 Messages on bundle usage. A few people will ask: ‘What are flash notifications or Class 0 messages?”.

What is a Flash SMS Notification?

A message that appears on the recipient’s mobile screen directly. The recipient does not need to go to the mobile phone inbox to read the message, nor is the message allocated to the SMS inbox. Flash SMS is a Value Added Service feature to the standard SMS delivery and is most commonly used to immediately catch the recipients’ attention. Flash SMS Notification is also known as a Class 0 Message, mostly on Apple Devices.

On the MTN Network, a typical example of an SMS Flash Notification is the call summary that one receives at the end of every call, detailing the call cost and duration.

MTN Flash SMS Notification on Bundle Usage

Although MTN has said that the feature will be active starting 3rd April, there is no real guideline as to how often notifications will roll out.

Some users were, however, less than enthused about the feature.

    Update:

The most recent message from MTN Ghana’s Facebook Page indicates that users will be able to reply with 1 to renew their bundle OR 2 to approve charging from their main account.

The message read: “Y’ello! Please be informed that from 3rd April, 2018 you will be receiving prompts on your bundle usage. Kindly reply with 1 to renew your bundle OR 2 to approve charging from main account.”.

However, it there is still the problem of notifications for those who use their mifi or devices that can not receive flash.

What do you think about the feature? Will getting notifications as you use your bundle help you to properly manage and check your usage?

  • Surfline Shortcodes, Tips, Tricks, Check and Recharge Balance & More

Surfline Shortcodes, Tips, Tricks, Check and Recharge Balance & More

Surfline launched in August 2014 and has been providing 4G data services to Ghanaians in Accra, Tema and Takoradi ever since. Personally, I got a Surfline Mi-Fi last week because my first choice Internet Service Provider was messing around so much with me.

I initially planned on getting the Surfline SIM Card, but my phone, although 4G did not support the band on which Surfline was operating on. The Surfline Mi-Fi I got cost GHS 250 and came with 5 GB of data. For someone like me, 5 GB seems so little.

In this post, I would want to talk about the shortcodes I found most useful, after using Surfline for close to 14 days. I hope you find them useful too and use them.

How to Check Surfline Data Balance on your phone

One of the easiest ways to check your Surfline balance is by using the Surfline Self Care Portal. However, in my case, I could not register for the portal (something I hope to get fixed asap). I, therefore,e needed to check my balance using my phone. I tested this method on MTN, Tigo, Vodafone and Airtel; it worked perfectly.

To check your Surfline data and cash balance:

    1. Dial *718*77# on your MTN, Tigo, Vodafone and Airtel handset
    2. Enter your Surfline number starting with 025
    3. Choose Option 1 (Check Balance)
    4. Exit the application, wait till you receive a message detailing your balance details.

How to Bundle Surfline and buy credit

Surfline has a range of bundles, which include limited and unlimited, as well as night bundles and bundles for people in a business.

    To bundle your Surfline bundle:

    1. Dial the Surfline Recharge Code *718*77# on your MTN, Tigo, Vodafone and Airtel handset to access the USSD menu
    2. Enter 3 to select the purchase bundle option
    3. Enter your Surfline number starting with 025
    4. Select your preferred bundle category, enter 00 for more bundles
    5. Select your preferred bundle
    6. Exit the application, wait till you receive a message confirming your bundle purchase.

How to Buy Surfline Data Bundle Using Mobile Money

Dial *389*7# to purchase your Surfline data bundle using mobile money.

One of the easiest ways to bundle on Surfline is to use mobile money, with no internet connection available, this option works.

Vodafone X – A Comprehensive Guide to Bundle Plans and Subscribing

Vodafone X has been around for a long time now, evolving at great speed and impressing many on its voyage. Ever since I heard “Vodafone X” in the latter part of 2013, it has remained one of the best data plans in the country. In this post, we look at the whole “Vodafone X thing” and which plan may be best for us.

    Who can use Vodafone X?

Vodafone X, in short, is a “group of youth-centred data plans by Vodafone Ghana”.

Vodafone X packages can be subscribed to by Ghanaian youth between the ages of 15 to 24. If you registered your Vodafone SIM with an ID that puts you below 15 years or above 24 years, you cannot register for the service. This makes sense on the part of Vodafone, especially as most of the people in the age bracket of 15 to 24 are active online and use data a lot more. This means that Vodafone X will give them the opportunity to do more when they pay less.

What happens when you are over 24 years?

As mentioned earlier, you cannot subscribe to any of the Vodafone X packages when you are over 24 years of age. If you are still interested in using Vodafone X even though you are above the age of 24, you could go buy the “already made Vodafone X sim cards”. For users who were already on Vodafone X before passing the 24-age limit, they shall not be affected and will continue to bundle and enjoy the Vodafone X packages so long as they remain active.

As of now, you can subscribe to Vodafone X regardless of your age.

    The Vodafone X Plans

There are currently 10 very unique plans you can choose from. 4 of these plans have a duration of a month – and an indication that the monthly plans are very popular. Only one app – the X-treme Monthly Plus provides free app data for Snapchat. All of the plans, however, provide free app data for WhatsApp.

Which Bundle is right for me?

This is a very tough question and for most people, it is difficult to answer. I would recommend that you start with the “smaller” bundles and see how long it takes you to exhaust them. A good way to start is with the X-Monthly plan which gives you 1.2 GB of Browsing Data and 500 MB for WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter for roughly GHS 12.

With this plan, it is easier to assess what your needs are. If you are able to exhaust the X-Monthly in just 2 weeks, you should definitely move to a higher plan. On the other hand, if the X-Monthly bundle is exhausted after in or after the third week, then with a little tweaking of your browsing habits, it should be the perfect plan for you.

One mistake a lot of Vodafone X users (those on monthly bundle plans) make is that they think they have “a lot of free data” and hurriedly consume more than 50 percent of their data limits in the first week of subscription.

As a Vodafone X user, you should always watch your browsing limits and abstain from downloading unnecessary content just because you have “a lot of data”. Remember, photos and videos consume bundle the most so you should be mindful of apps like Snapchat and Instagram.

We wrote an article on how to use less data on your mobile. You can read that here: How to Stop Snapchat and Instagram from Using all your mobile Data.

How to Subscribe to Vodafone X

Subscribing to Vodafone X is fast and easy although some people do face problems sometimes. You can subscribe by dialling 5888 or *5888# and following the prompt. For a complete Guide on How to Subscribe, click here: How to Subscribe to Vodafone X

What happens when my duration is up, yet I still have a bundle?

Although this does not happen frequently, a lot of users, at the end of their duration may still have some bundle left. Sadly, Vodafone X does not support “data roll-over”. This means that all your remaining data will be lost once you renew your plan or activate a new plan.

    The Bottom Line

There are a lot of data plans from the various network operators but quite a lot of people seem to be interested in Vodafone X. This may be due to the “difficult to resist” offers or a good marketing strategy or a combination of both. However the case, Vodafone X does not look to be going away soon and will continue to remain the favorite of a lot more people.
