  • 3 reasons why I’m buying the new Huawei Y7 Prime 2018

3 reasons why I’m buying the new Huawei Y7 Prime 2018

The Huawei Y7 Prime has a 5.99-inch 1440 x 720 FullView display with 269 PPI pixel density and 18:9 aspect ratio. The device is powered by a 1.4GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor and comes with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage with the option of an expandable memory of up to 256Gigs. Y7 Prime has a 3,000mAh Li-ion battery.

Yeah, that’s all just specs. Last week. while at the Accra Mall. I happened to pass by the Huawei Shop there and spent a few minutes with the device. Well, the time spent was enough to convince me to get one.

Here are the top reasons why I will be getting the Huawei Y7 Prime 2018.

    Camera

Dual Cameras have become the norm, almost a convention and Huawei is already on that ship. Huawei Y7 Prime 2018 comes equipped with 13MP + 2 MP rear cameras. The wide-aperture feature gives DSLR like depth to your photos (those photos with a very blurred background; the ones you see off professional DSLR cameras).

I spent a great deal of time testing the front camera. I mostly find myself taking selfies always and for me, the front camera is very important in making a buying decision. The 8-Megapixel front camera was awesome. It also has a LED flashlight – which I never used, but the quality of the photos it gave out was amazing. Lots of details and great colour.

    Performance

I never had the chance to use last years Y7. However, what I do know is that it was powered by the Snapdragon 435, higher than the Snapdragon 430 processor in the 2018 model. That notwithstanding, the current 2018 model was so smooth to use. Juggling between the already installed applications, the camera, recording videos and playing them back all went well. There was no lagging or freezing.

    General Design and FullView Display

The device that I got my hands on was in Huawei’s signature blue colour. Bear in mind that the Y7 Prime 2018 comes in 3 solid colours: Black, Blue and Gold. Although the rear cover of the phone felt like it was made of plastic, the finishing and colour gave it a design, while mastering a premium look.

Then comes the 18:9 screen ration, what Huawei calls the FullView Display. 18:9 displays are perfect for multitasking using multi-window where each app is rendered in neat squares of 720 x 720 pixels each. The FullView Display, together with the bezel-less design affords the phone a modern 2018 design.

Other Great Features of the Huawei Y7 Prime 2018

    Extended Finger Print Functionality

On the Huawei Y7 Prime 2018, the fingerprint is not used to just lock or unlock the phone. It can also be used to answer calls, capture videos and photos, stop the alarm as well as browse photos.

Selfie Toning Flash, even in low light

Price of the Huawei Y7 Prime 2018 in Ghana

For all of the great features and functionalities, you would think the Y7 Prime 2018 will cost a fortune. Well, the good news is Huawei is making it possible for everyone to use this wonderful phone. With only GHS 859, you can get yourself a brand new Y7 Prime 2018 at any phone retail shop in Ghana.

In addition, you get free MTN Data – 2GB every month for the next 6 months and a gift box from Huawei.

  • Long Overdue: Ghana to be fully Paypal-compliant by 2020

Long Overdue: Ghana to be fully Paypal-compliant by 2020

Ghana has concluded discussions with renowned online payments system Paypal and will, therefore, if all goes well, become one of the Paypal-compliant countries soon, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has announced.

The Vice President made the announcement at the launch ceremony for the first phase of the first mobile money payments interoperability system in Ghana in Accra on Thursday 10th May 2018.

Online payments system Paypal supports online money transfers and serves as an electronic alternative to traditional paper methods like cheques and money orders. The company operates as a payment processor for online vendors, auction sites, and other commercial users, for which it charges a small fee in exchange for benefits such as one-click transactions and password memory.

To be implemented in two phases, Ghana’s entry into the Paypal system is expected to be completed by the first half of 2020 and forms part of Government’s ongoing efforts to build a new and modern economy.

According to the roadmap presented by Paypal, by the second half of 2019, Ghanaian merchants should be able to receive payments for their goods sold online. By the first half of 2020 Ghanaian consumers would be able to make payments for goods and services purchased online via Paypal accounts.

“It is now up to us, the Bank of Ghana, GHIPSS, Banks, Fintechs, Telcos and Merchants to make this happen within this time frame and also to prepare for the opportunities it presents,” Dr Bawumia urged, adding, “I would ask that GHIPSS puts together a working group of stakeholders to work to implement this roadmap.”

“This presents exciting opportunities for Ghana” the Vice President continued, “and we should take full advantage of it. We should see, amongst other developments, a major boost in e-commerce in Ghana. We are building a new and modern economy.”

The launch of the first mobile money payments interoperability system in Ghana is also in furtherance of Government’s drive for a new and modern economy, according to Vice President Bawumia.

It is expected to largely eliminate the difficulties associated with traditional banking services, such as the difficulty in opening bank accounts, the high costs associated with maintaining a bank account relative to customers’ income levels, the need to have basic literacy, administration and record keeping abilities and English-language capacity to operate a bank account, and the sheer intimidating nature of banking halls.

Following the launch, customers will be able to move freely monies from mobile money to mobile money accounts across different networks. This means that customers who have mobile money accounts with say, MTN can easily transfer or receive money from other networks such as Airtel-Tigo or Vodafone.

Furthermore, mobile customers can move money from their mobile money accounts to bank accounts without any hassle, freeing up funds locked up in the telecom sector.

As well, from the bank side customers can move money from their bank account(s) to mobile money accounts.

According to Fintech experts, this will make Ghana one of the global leaders in the interoperability payments space.

Download now: Wala App Launched to drive blood donations in Ghana

Over the years, many Ghanaians have had to depend on family, friends and paid volunteers for blood donations. This is sadly due to an inadequate stock of blood in blood banks across the country. To address this challenge, the National Blood Service and BISA have partnered to develop the WALA health App to drive voluntary blood donations.

On Friday the 4th of May, 2018 Wala Health application was launched at the Efua Sutherland Park. The event was graced by the Second Lady of the Republic of Ghana, H.E Samira Bawumia.

She encouraged the public to download the application and also to donate blood to help save lives. Minister of Communications, Hon. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful stated that technology has to have a practical application for our people and the Wala App is a practical application for the people and the government is ready to support practical app developers.

Other dignitaries available at the launch were The Ministry of health through its representative, and the Mayor of Accra, Mohammed Adjei Sowah.

On the 3rd of August 2017, the National Blood Service Ghana signed an agreement with Bisa, to partner in the development of Wala Health Application. Developed by Raindolf Owusu a Ghanaian based software developer and founder of Oasis Websoft and Dr Denis Addo a healthcare practitioner. Wala simply means Life in one of the Ghanaian dialects, Ga. The app basically serves as a platform for blood donation, which provides information on various blood donation events across the country.

It also enlightens its users on blood donation and its importance. With other features available its users have access to frequently asked questions, data on blood donations and daily tips on other diseases such as diabetes and stroke. Users can also call the National blood centre call centre directly from the app.

The mandate according to the National Blood Service Ghana is to ensure an effective and coordinated national approach to the provision of safe, adequate and effective blood and blood donations making it accessible and affordable to all patients.

Voluntary blood donations in Ghana currently stands at 36% which is 3.6 over ten donations and also a blood collection inverse per thousand population of 6.1. Which means out of every thousand population only six people donate, which does not meet the blood donation requirement of 270,000 units of blood that is a percent of the population.

Technology has transformed many nations positively and as the world is evolving we must evolve with it. Developed countries have more effective health care systems as a result of the efficient use of technology and as the developing country, Ghana is, we have to adopt such methods to improve the healthcare systems.

As the number of mobile applications is increasing every day and people spend more time on their phones, creating an awareness and equally providing an effective means to ensure blood donations as an application can help meet the requirements of the blood service as more individuals donate blood to save lives.

During the launch of the application, there was free health screening and also blood donations. Let us accept voluntary blood donation as a civic responsibility. Together we can achieve the WHO target of 100% voluntary donation by 2020. Wala, Get Empowered To Save A Life Today.

  • MTN introducing Mobile Money “ATMs” in Ghana soon

MTN introducing Mobile Money “ATMs” in Ghana soon

Telecoms giant, MTN is working to deploy machines that could take deposits and dispense cash for its mobile money business.

JoyBusiness has gathered that MTN has already secured the self-servicing kiosk, but with limited functions like sim change and airtime.

However the plan is to allow the machine take deposits and dispense cash, this is to aid their mobile money business. It is also to ensure that at every point in time, subscribers can turn to this machine to transaction transfers or the mobile money business.

    Approvals

JoyBusiness understands MTN had to suspend the mobile money function on the self-servicing kiosk, even on a pilot basis. This is because they have not secured the necessary regulatory approvals. Sources say even though the regulator is willing to approve the service, it wants to be carried out in a way that would not result in MTN operating as a fully fledged bank.

The regulator is also worried about the impact on vendors currently in the country, as it employs more than 150,000 persons.

The Payment and Settlement bill, which will seek to address issues like this, is yet to receive parliamentary approval. Therefore, it is likely that it might take a while before MTN can introduce the full service to aid its mobile money business.

Is MTN planning to become a bank?

MTN Group Chief Executive Rob Shuter announced during the 2018 Deloitte Africa outlook conference in Woodmead that it is working to become Africa’s biggest bank. According to the telecoms giant, this has been influenced largely by the progress made by its mobile money business.

Mr Shuter said, “The core digital service that we have decided to put our money on is Mobile Money. Mobile Money is really about leveraging the strength of the brand and leveraging the strength of the distribution because we have built a huge informal distribution network for prepaid airtime to bring customers into a transactional banking system.”

He pointed out that MTN has deployed Mobile Money across 14 markets and “if we look at our 30-day active users, which is the most important metric, we are growing by half a million customers a month. I think that’s pretty cool and today we are sitting at 21 million subscribers”.

    Response from MTN Ghana

Speaking to JoyBusiness, the former Chief Executive of MTN Ghana, Ebenezer Asante said the plan is to rather partner with the commercial banks to provide banking services to the population rather than becoming a bank, “the model that we have implemented across the region is all about partnership rather than directly going into banking services.”

Mr Asante added that they want to concentrate on their core business and rather join the banks to improve financial inclusion in the country rather going out, to compete with the commercial banks.

    Impact on mobile money merchants

The service if rolled out, would definitely affect some merchants in the country. The mobile money business currently employs more than 150,000 persons in the country. There is the likelihood that a lot more people would choose a self-servicing machine over the merchants out there. This development could then affect commissions earned by merchants.

Returns on Mobile Money business for MTN

Figures from the Bank of Ghana showed that MTN has about 90 percent of the GH¢2.3 billion of the mobile money accounts held with commercial banks. MTN as at October 2017 had GH¢2.1 billion representing 93.5 percent of deposits held at commercial banks.

The Data from the Bank of Ghana also showed that Fidelity Bank had the largest share of mobile money deposits with GH¢583 million, ECOBANK has Gh¢470 million, while CAL BANK has GH¢229 million.
