2018 Hackathon: Ho Technical University Electronic Voting System Wins

A team from the Ho Technical University (HTU) won the grand prize at this year’s Hackathon; a collaborative computer programming contest that seeks to challenge the skills of computer engineering, science and technical students in tertiary institutions across the country.

The team won the “Best Product Idea Award” for developing a secured electronic voting system using blockchain technology, and was awarded a GHC3,000.00 cash prize.

The epic competition organized by Hacklab Foundation was held at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and attracted the participation of 112 teams from 15 tertiary institutions, which solved challenges using Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, and Block Chain technologies.

The project featured entrepreneurs and other industry stakeholders who mentored and shared expertise with the participants.

Mr Carlos Ankora, Head of the Computer Science Department, presenting the prizes to the Management of HTU, said the Institution produced five teams which won a total of four out of a possible eight awards at the event.

He said the feat included the “Most Promising Female Developers Award”, won by the University’s all-female team for developing an environmental monitoring system to help stakeholders deal with issues such as pollution.

Mr Ankora said another team won the “Vodafone Special Award” for a hospital crowd funding programme to streamline donations to health facilities.

Professor Emmanuel Sakyi, Interim Vice Chancellor of the University, said the success of the teams was evident of the “strong collaboration between lectures and students”, as well as a strong team spirit within the departments.

He said the Technical University would continue to ensure that students were equipped with “frugal innovative ideas that can transform society and impact Ghana’s development”.

Professor Sakyi said Information and Communication Technology must be utilized to enhance teaching, learning and research, and commended lecturers for helping elevate the image of the University “despite the institutional and logistical challenges”.

He promised management’s continuous support towards such activities and asked students to endeavour to win more laurels for the Institution.

A total of GHC6,800.00 was awarded to the HTU entrants, as well as a free Microsoft training course for the all-female team.

  • Heads Up! MTN to start giving flash SMS notifications on bundle usage

Heads Up! MTN to start giving flash SMS notifications on bundle usage

MTN Ghana has come under pressure in recent times over how “quickly” their bundle disappears. Last week, a friend told me how her 2GB of data just vanished in a day.

Well, personally, I don’t believe data can just vanish, except in some rare scenarios where there have been genuine mistakes from telcos (some of which never really get solved), the secret to how fast your data is consumed lies in your browsing habits. We shared tips on how to prevent some apps from using all your data.

For example, I asked this friend to check her data usage to see which apps were actually responsible for her loss. The result – WhatsApp had used over 2GB in just a few days.

Since the introduction of the status feature, WhatsApp has been consuming a lot of data and lots of people don’t even realise. The truth is that a video status lasting for 30 seconds is averagely 20MB per the videos I post on my status. Watching just 5 of these videos will set you back around 100MB.

Why all this explanation when we are talking about flash notification on bundle usage?

Well, for starters, before this, MTN does not give indications as to when your bundle is getting finished. Networks like Vodafone and the then Airtel (now AirtelTigo) inform you when your bundle is being used. There are notifications for 50% usage, 90% usage, etc so you have a fair idea how much data you have remaining.

These notifications help to keep a subscriber in check, hence the good news that MTN will send Class 0 Messages on bundle usage. A few people will ask: ‘What are flash notifications or Class 0 messages?”.

What is a Flash SMS Notification?

A message that appears on the recipient’s mobile screen directly. The recipient does not need to go to the mobile phone inbox to read the message, nor is the message allocated to the SMS inbox. Flash SMS is a Value Added Service feature to the standard SMS delivery and is most commonly used to immediately catch the recipients’ attention. Flash SMS Notification is also known as a Class 0 Message, mostly on Apple Devices.

On the MTN Network, a typical example of an SMS Flash Notification is the call summary that one receives at the end of every call, detailing the call cost and duration.

MTN Flash SMS Notification on Bundle Usage

Although MTN has said that the feature will be active starting 3rd April, there is no real guideline as to how often notifications will roll out.

Some users were, however, less than enthused about the feature.

    Update:

The most recent message from MTN Ghana’s Facebook Page indicates that users will be able to reply with 1 to renew their bundle OR 2 to approve charging from their main account.

The message read: “Y’ello! Please be informed that from 3rd April, 2018 you will be receiving prompts on your bundle usage. Kindly reply with 1 to renew your bundle OR 2 to approve charging from main account.”.

However, it there is still the problem of notifications for those who use their mifi or devices that can not receive flash.

What do you think about the feature? Will getting notifications as you use your bundle help you to properly manage and check your usage?

  • MTN Content Manager: This MTN Shortcode may solve your problems

MTN Content Manager: This MTN Shortcode may solve your problems

MTN Ghana has a whole lot of shortcodes for services in Ghana. For a lot of people, it’s just experimentation to try out which services work or which ones are nice.

The majority of people are mostly unimpressed with some of these services but are also unable to unsubscribe from them. Note that before now, the easiest way to stop a service was to send “STOP” to the shortcode that the service delivered messages or alerts on.

There comes a problem, however – more often than not, unsubscribing or stopping a service does not seem to work. Sending stop to the shortcode does not give any feedback, and hence there are no results. And there is also the issue of receiving messages from real sender IDs and not shortcodes. In this way, users find it difficult to stop services.

I have personally tried several times to unsubscribe from some services but failed. What’s more? The long waiting time to speak to an MTN agent via the call centre is something that puts me off. For me, it’s a joy that the MTN Content Manager is here, and it comes with a shortcode that is not so easy to remember, after all, that’s why there are shortcodes!

What does the MTN Content Manager do?

The MTN Content manager is a portal that users can access by dialling *175# on their MTN phones. The portal, which runs via USSD enables MTN subscribers to view, add or cancel MTN Services and Subscriptions.

How to unsubscribe from an MTN Service via the Content Manager

    • Dial *175# on your MTN Phone to access the dashboard.
    • Choose Option 1 (My Subscriptions)
    • A record of your current subscriptions will show up.
    • Choose the subscription you would want to stop
    • Select “stop”

And that’s how to unsubscribe from services easily on MTN.

  • Standard Chartered Bank’s Cyber Security Summit 2018 organised in Accra

Standard Chartered Bank’s Cyber Security Summit 2018 organised in Accra

Standard Chartered Bank Ghana has organised a Cyber Security Summit in Accra. The summit, which took place at the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel, engaged top stakeholders in the banking and security sectors.

Technologies such as big data analytics, the Internet of Things (IoT), the blockchain, and mobile computing are reinventing the way companies, especially those in the financial and banking sectors handle everything, from decision making to customer service. The automation of virtually all business processes and the increasing digital connectedness of the entire value chain create agility, but they also significantly raise cybersecurity risks and threat levels.

The 3-hour event saw an educative and insightful panel discussion on cybersecurity issues at the government, institutional and end-user level which a focus on how to prevent and tackle the threats.

In attendance were representatives of the Police and telecommunications networks, as well as key stakeholders in the financial and security sectors of the country. Also invited and in attendance were students of the University of Ghana Business School and Ashesi University students.

The panel discussion was moderated by Bernard Avle. Panelists for the day were:

    • Alex Bram, Co-Founder at HubTel Ghana,
    • Prof. Nii Narku Quaynor, a scientist, and an engineer who has played an important role in the introduction and development of the Internet throughout Africa,
    • Sheikh Jobe, Chief Information Officer of Standard Chartered Bank, West Africa,
    • Hon. Vincent Sowah Odotei, Deputy Minister of Communication, and
    • Archie Hesse CEO of GhIPSS

Professor Nii Narku Quaynor confessed that “Globally, we do not know how to create systems that are bug-free”. Therefore, there was the need to raise awareness of cyber crimes and put risk mitigation plans in place at the various level of application usage and management.

Alex Bram of HubTel put forward that the first Cyber threat always comes from within an organisation. It was therefore imperative that when fighting against Cyber threats, start from within.

The Deputy Minister of Communication, Hon. Vincent Sowah Odotei expressed Government’s commitment to fighting cybercrime and stressed on the fact that the government takes such threats seriously. According to him, the Government has put a lot in place to ensure that there is Cyber Security.

Perhaps the biggest revelation and probably the most satisfying for a lot of the people in attendance and those who watched the live stream on Facebook was the revelation by Michael Mensah, the Head of ICT at the Bank of Ghana (BoG). In his speech, he said that the Bank of Ghana will soon require financial institutions in the country to publish their cybersecurity policies.

Mr Mensah further hinted that a bill is expected to be passed by parliament soon and this will ultimately will help banks to “achieve both business and security-focused objectives as well as regulatory compliance in an efficient and effective way.”

At the end of the summit, one thing was clear – there was the need to tackle cyber threats collectively, and as such all players in the cybersecurity space needs to come together to create viable solutions. Like Archie Hesse, the CEO of GhIPPS rightly put it: “Coming together to work on Cyber Security for the industry is something we should aim for.”

  • The best ways to disconnect your Facebook account from third-party apps

The best ways to disconnect your Facebook account from third-party apps

Following the revelation that research company Cambridge Analytica harvested data from more than 50 million Facebook users to use in the run-up to the 2016 US presidential election, it’s a good time to think about which third-party organizations you’ve given access to your Facebook data and revoke any you’re not entirely comfortable with.

You might also have granted access to apps that have since changed hands, meaning they are now passing your data along to organizations you wouldn’t have given permission originally.

Cambridge Analytica obtained data through an innocuous-looking personality profile tool called thisisyourdigitallife – the kind of app you might grant permission to your profile without thinking twice. Here’s how to find out who’s looking at your profile and stop any apps that have more access than they should.

BookLamp is a now-defunct app dedicated to comparing the content of novels. It was bought by Apple in 2015, but you might now have been aware if you’d connected it to your Facebook account

    What are you sharing?

Often, when you want to use a new online service, you’re given the option of creating a new account just for that site or logging in using your Facebook or Google account. It’s often tempting to opt for the latter – it’s quicker, more convenient, and you only have to click a single confirmation button – but by doing so, you can end up sharing far more data than you realize.

Logging into an app with Facebook can share a vast amount of information that’s invaluable to advertisers and organizations like Cambridge Analytica, including:

    • Full name
    • Friends list
    • Profile picture
    • Photos
    • Education
    • Work history

Quizzes and personality tests shared on Facebook also request access to your data, and it’s all too easy to simply click ‘Accept’ without considering why a horoscope app wants to know where you went to school or make posts to your friends on your behalf.

If you've been using Facebook for many years, you probably won't recognize all the apps you've given access to your data
If you’ve been using Facebook for many years, you probably won’t recognize all the apps you’ve given access to your data

    How to disconnect apps

To see what you’ve given permission to access your data, check out your App Settings page. You might be shocked just how many are listed, and although some will be familiar, there’s a good chance many won’t be.

Click any of the apps here to see what information you’re sharing with its developers. You can choose to stop sharing certain types of information with an app, though you can’t stop it accessing your public profile without disconnecting it completely.

The exact options presented when you click an app will depend on its developer. Sometimes you’ll be able to view a full privacy policy, but it’s not mandatory for developers to provide one. If you’ve given an app permission to post to your wall, removing it will also give you the option to remove those posts

Bear in mind that if you remove an app, the developer might still have your data on file. Facebook notes that the only way you can remove this is to contact the developer yourself.

Your friends might install apps that share your information with third parties, so it's worth taking a minute to consider what they can see
Your friends might install apps that share your information with third parties, so it’s worth taking a minute to consider what they can see

If you want to stop sharing your Facebook data with any third parties, select ‘Edit’ under ‘Apps, websites, and plug-ins’ and disconnect your account from the Facebook Platform (a set of tools and services for developers to create their own products).

You don’t just need to worry about your own sharing preferences, either – third parties can also receive your data when your friends install an app. According to Facebook, this “makes their experience better and more social”, but since you have no control over which apps they trust, it’s wise to consider turning this off. To prevent this, visit your App Settings, select ‘Edit’ under the heading ‘Apps other people use’ and uncheck all the categories you’d rather keep private.

Finally, whenever you log into a site using Facebook or connect a new app, make sure you check which information it’s requesting and consider whether it’s really worthwhile. As Cambridge Analytica showed, apparently benign requests can be anything but.
