5 Top Apps To Be Selected At MTN Ayoba Hackaton Finale happening on 17th September 2021

Over the weekend, the MTN Ayoba Hackaton 2021 was held virtually. Developers pitched their app ideas. The event had 26 shortlisted participants out of 171 enrolled applicants.

Assigned mentors or coaches groomed the participants before their presentation. Ayoba Super App is meant to provide a platform that hosts micro apps that would leverage on MTN database to reach a wider audience.

The Ayoba Hackathon 2021 called for applicants to join the race to win funding support of up to GHS 50,000.

On the presentation day, the participants shared their anxiety and excitement about their pitch—a mixed feeling about what they had prepared and what outcome the judges expected.

A participant shared his anxiety; ‘I am just focused on doing my very best, to leave an impression beyond my application, hoping my application is something that they find pleasing and something that they think is worth getting on board with. So I am very hopeful, and I hope that things will turn out well in my favour’.

All participants were able to share their presentations generally to the satisfaction of the judges. The competition seems keen when the organisers are challenged with mind-blowing sustainable solutions in the tech world.

The grand finale of this project will be held virtually to award the Top 3 apps with a cash prize. According to the organisers, all participant apps would be hosted on the Ayoba Super App.

We hope to see these apps from the Hackathon make a big hit on the Ayoba platform and transition into global independent apps, where useful.

  • [Updated] MTN to MTN Calls not connecting for most customers in Ghana

[Updated] MTN to MTN Calls not connecting for most customers in Ghana

Update: As at 20:51 GMT on Monday, 26th July 2021, the call services seem to have been restored for a lot of customers.

A lot of MTN customers on the evening of Monday, 26th July 2021, have been complaining that they are unable to make calls to other MTN numbers. The first complaint came to me at 19:27 GMT.

Most of these complaints have been on social media. A few people I spoke to also on WhatsApp encountered the same issue.

I tried calling 4 different MTN numbers and the call just drops.

Although this is a general issue, correspondence on MTN Ghana’s Twitter account seems to tackle it “individually”.

Hopefully, MTN Ghana resolves the issue so we can all go back to making calls. Do well to check out MTN’s Mashup offer if you make a lot of calls.

  • PES Officially Renamed to ‘eFootball’ + Fan WhatsApp Group

PES Officially Renamed to ‘eFootball’ + Fan WhatsApp Group

Konami, the official developer of one of the most popular football games in the world, Pro Evolution Soccer (PES) has changed the name to eFootball.

Pro Evolution Soccer, popularly known by many as PES has been one of the top football games in the world and has served gamers for over 25 years. Over the years, the name has always been Pro Evolution Soccer (PES).

But now, that is going to change after Konami officially announced on Wednesday 21st July 2021 that they will be changing the name from Pro Evolution Soccer (PES) to eFootball. If you are a PES follower, then you might have realized that the 2020 version of the game was called eFootball PES but now there will be no PES attached to it.

This news was revealed after an official reveal trailer was released on the official YouTube channel of eFootball (the video has been embedded below).

This rebranding is expected to take place when the new release comes out in early autumn this year. The game will be released on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC, Android, and iOS devices.

In addition to the rebranding, the game will now be a digital-only, and free-to-play game. When the game is released, you will be able to play exhibition matches and a selection of 9 teams (clubs) to play with but as time goes on, Konami promises to add more features.

Also added to eFootball is the new cross-platform feature. With this feature, a user on either Xbox, PS, Android, or iOS device will be able to play against each other without any restrictions.

In terms of the graphics, eFootball is built on Unreal Engine which has allowed the developers to unveil their Motion Matching animation system. This according to Konami “converts the vast range of movements that players make on the pitch into a series of animations, selecting the most accurate one in real-time”.

To find out more about the rebranding, watch the video below.

NOTE: if you are an active eFootball PES Mobile version player on either Android or iOS, make sure to text +233509464229 on WhatsApp to be added to the new WhatsApp group where more guides and information will be shared for free.

  • You Can’t withdraw your MTN Mobile Money at a Merchant without an ID

You Can’t withdraw your MTN Mobile Money at a Merchant without an ID

Starting from 1st February 2021, MTN Mobile Money customers will not be able to withdraw their money at a merchant unless they have a valid national ID Card.

The move is seen as a way by MTN Ghana to curb the high prevalence of fraud on the widely adopted MoMo platform.

Under this new system, one of the following cards need to be presented at the merchant for a Mobile Money transaction:

    • Ghana Card
    • Driving License
    • Passport
    • Voter’s ID
    • SSNIT ID and
    • NHIS

According to MTN Ghana, “when an agent is performing a cash-out for a subscriber, the agent is required to select the ID type and enter the ID number of the ID card the subscriber provides.”

As mentioned earlier, this new update to the way MTN Mobile Money withdrawals are done at the merchants will be in full force on February 1.

With the new system, MoMo withdrawals at merchants are going to take longer as the merchant has to now enter the ID Type and the ID Number (2 extra steps).

Kindly note that you can use any of the IDs listed above provided they have been registered in your name, and not necessarily the ones that you initially registered your Mobile Money with.

  • Breaking: Ghana’s Ministry of Health Website nabbed using stolen WordPress theme

Breaking: Ghana’s Ministry of Health Website nabbed using stolen WordPress theme

One thing web developers and organisations as a whole hate is to see their website taken down by hackers.

Therefore, a lot of individuals spend a lot of time and money protecting their website against hackers. This includes developers of the themes themselves.

Vulnerabilities in themes can cause websites to be hacked, so theme developers are always on the lookout to put out the best software possible.

However, when Government organisations fail to pay for themes and resort to using nulled, pirated or stolen themes, this does not only hurt developers and other tech players but also put the thousands of individuals who visit these sites in trouble and at risk of a hack.

Yawa: Ghana’s Ministry of Health Website appears to be using a nulled (stolen) version of the popular Jannah Theme, which cost only $45 or GHS 270 – when they could just have bought it.

Developers of the theme, who might be suffering from the loss of revenue from actions from organisations such as the Ministry of Health, or the developers who work for them appear to have gone “Anas style”.

The developers seem to rely on some code in the theme to check if the theme is registered and deface websites of unscrupulous individuals who want to use the theme without paying for it.

You can check out the messed up Ghana Ministry of Health site here.

As a member of the Accra WordPress Meetup group, I hope this issue is resolved fast, at least for the love of the community. However, developers, whether on WordPress or any other platform, should not be ripped off, even under the GNU General Public License v2.0 that WordPress themes and plugins are released under.
