  • Understand Bitcoins: Event: How Cryptocurrency can make you rich!

Understand Bitcoins: Event: How Cryptocurrency can make you rich!

Last December, I started writing about cryptocurrencies and bitcoins in specific. In parts one and two of the “Understanding Bitcoins” series, we looked at what bitcoins are, why they have become popular, and ways their value is determined. We also went into details to talk about how to create bitcoin wallets and the popular exchanges in Ghana.

For those who are quite new to this Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency thing, it gets confusing. Sometimes, it makes sense to get a face to face meeting, to get people to really understand the whole cryptocurrency space.

The series continues next month. This month, I have been held up busy, as I am making a few preparations for Mfidie and the first ever Accra WordPress Meetup, scheduled to take place in February this year. It was during the WordPress Event discussions with Adjei-Kyeremeh Kofi that I learnt of this event I am about to share with you below.

    Cryptocurrency Conference 2018

On the 10th of February 2018 GC Global in collaboration with Coin Forest brings you the first edition of the cryptocurrency conference happening on the 10th February at iSpace, Accra. At the conference, information will be shared on how to take advantage of an ICO or trade in cryptocurrencies to make returns. The GC Global Bitcoin event is going to teach you all about Cryptocurrency. The truth about Bitcoins, how to buy and sell, trade in crypto and how to invest and make money in the crypto industry. It’s easier than you think.

  • Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 plus to be announced in February 2018 at MWC

Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 plus to be announced in February 2018 at MWC

The Samsung Galaxy S9 is just a month away from becoming official, as Samsung has confirmed that its 2018 flagship will see a launch at MWC in February.

It’s unlikely the impending unveiling will have many surprises in store, though, as we already know a much about the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus, courtesy of the online rumour mill.

Evan Blass, a well-known tech informant, says he learned from a C-level executive at a smartphone-case maker that the Galaxy S9 and larger Galaxy S9 Plus will be available to pre-order on March 1 and will go on sale on March 16.

Rumoured Specifications of the Samsung Galaxy S9

    • 5.8in / 6.2in QHD+ Super AMOLED curved display (570ppi / 529ppi)
    • Android 8.0
    • Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 (US) / Samsung Exynos (UK)
    • 4GB RAM / 6GB RAM
    • 64GB/128GB / 64GB/128GB/256GB storage
    • Cat 18 LTE support (1.2Gbps download speeds)
    • Rear-mounted fingerprint scanner
    • 12MP Dual Pixel camera with OIS (f/1.5, f/2.4) / Vertical dual rear-facing camera
    • Bixby AI assistant with dedicated button
    • USB-C, 3.5mm headphone jack
    • Wireless charging support
    • IP68 water and dust resistance
    • Built-in FM radio
    • Updated DeX docking station

If you already know you’re going to drop the cash on a Galaxy S9 or S9 Plus, the big day is March 1st. Pre-orders should be live at that time, but there will most likely be some variation across different markets and carriers. Here in Ghana, Pre-orders are expected to be around 15th March.

Phones will reportedly ship and hit store shelves in Ghana during the last week of March 2018.

Predicted Price of the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus in Ghana

The Samsung Galaxy S9 is predicted to go for GHS 4,200 with the S9 Plus at GHS 4,800 when they are released into the Ghanaian market this year. Depending on deals that they could come with, the prices should be a bit lower.

  • Why you should never root your Android phone or even try to!

Why you should never root your Android phone or even try to!

Rooting is a process that allows you to attain root access to the Android operating system code (the equivalent term for Apple devices is jailbreaking). It gives you privileges to modify the software code on the device or install other software that the manufacturer wouldn’t normally allow you to. Simply put, rooting your phone allows you to remove restrictions put on the phone, mostly by the manufacturer.

I was a big fan of rooting phones! The first time I rooted my phone, it was because Android KitKat had been released and I desperately wanted to try the new OS. At the time, I could not have KitKat on my Samsung Galaxy S4, so I had to root, to be able to install a custom ROM with Android 4.4.2.

I remember the joy I shared that day. Prior to rooting, I had read a lot of scary stuff on XDA Developers. But then, I said to myself: “Hey Shepherd, you might as well risk it! You didn’t buy the phone anyways!”.

    Announcing my first successful root.
    Announcing my first successful root.

For those who feel their phone can’t do enough, rooting it may provide the ultimate sense of liberation (I am a big fan of customisation! And that’s why the now Obsolete Windows Phone OS was never my taste).

But if rooting can provide liberation and freedom, why would I ask you not to attempt it?

Why you shouldn’t Root your Android Phone

    Rooting is no longer necessary

The practice of rooting was very popular in the early days of Android, especially by people who fancied the idea of customising their phones and giving them added functionalities. Usually, when a new version of Android was rolled out, it could take as long as a year for Phone Manufacturers to release an update to handsets.

It was very frustrating to know you own the latest flagship, but couldn’t have the latest software. Also, security updates could not be delivered on time if the update for the operating system was not available. Users who wanted these security fixes had no option than to root.

However, in this day, a lot of the top brands push updates between one to 3 months when new Android Versions are out. When it comes to security, Google pushes the security updates directly to the devices, making the Android OS much safer than before. So why root to get a security update when it would be available in a month anyway?

Rooting is a difficult process and you can destroy your android device

Most definitely. Every different model of a device has a different way to root it. In fact, depending on the current Android versions of the device, the rooting methodology will be different.

This makes rooting mostly a trial and error kind of thing and it is not rare to meet someone who is still trying to root their phones after more than 3 unsuccessful methods. Unless you are willing to do a lot of investigation and be very patient with the trial and error phases of rooting your device, don’t try it!

The average person who tries to root his/her phone may end up bricking it. This means your phone may become useless. Sometimes, you end up with a boot loop (where the phone keeps restarting itself).

Rooting can expose you to security vulnerabilities

I mentioned earlier that some people root their phones to get security patches. However, rooting your phone can also lead you into the situation where you are unable to get updates for your Android.

If you do go further to install a custom ROM, can you trust it? Most ROMS are made by people who waive all liability related to the ROM and even warn you not to use it.

Moreover, rooting your device will evade lots of the OS-level security features Android has put in place. When I wrote an article on why an antivirus may not be necessary for Android Phones, I certainly was not referring to rooted devices.

    What do you think?

Rooting may sound like all fun, but the points raised above are very serious and legitimate ones you should look at. Don’t adopt the “it-won’t-happen-to-me” mentality. Look sharp!

Don’t root your android phone, unless it is a phone you don’t really need anymore and can afford to use it as a lab rat in your own experiment. Take this from someone who once made money rooting phones for people (I did warn them though)!

Features of the Tecno Camon CM

First ever 18:9 aspect ratio on a Tecno Phone

What’s so special about the 18:9 ratio? Well, regular smartphones (like the Tecno Camon CX and the Hisense King Kong 2) come with the widely accepted 16:9 screen ratio. This meant that the left and right sides, as well as the top and bottom of the phone, would have bezels. But with the 18:9 ratio, manufacturers are able to achieve a larger display on a comparatively smaller body.

Tecno managed to bring the 18:9 aspect ratio, but with very significant bezels. This did not go well with a lot of their fans who expressed a lot of dissatisfaction on their Facebook page.

The first pictures released by Tecno suggested that the Camon CM will be bezel-less. Fans were disappointed to realise the real phone had very significant bezels.
The first pictures released by Tecno suggested that the Camon CM will be bezel-less. Fans were disappointed to realise the real phone had very significant bezels.

    Improved Camera Experience

As a Camon phone, the one area Tecno cannot compromise on is the Camera section. True to the spirit of a Camon phone, the Tecno Camon CM comes with a 13 megapixels front-facing camera and another 13 megapixels rear camera. Both the front and rear cameras have LED flash.

The LED flash at the rear of the phone packs enough brightness to be used as a torchlight. Generally and for accessibility options, users of the phone can use it as a notification indicator.

    Processing Power, RAM and Storage

Just like any other Tecno Phone, The CM is packed with a quad-core processor functioning with the MediaTek MT6737 chipset. The processor can reach speeds of 1.25 Gigahertz. Although scanty on the ram side, with just 2GB, it is still enough and manageable to use the CM without any visible lagging (freezing).

The phone also comes with 16GB Storage space, but there is an option to upgrade this via an SD Card to 128 GB. The combination of processor, ram and storage is enough to keep the phone running for all average users. If you need more processing power, I suggest you get the Tecno Phantom 8 or wait for the next Phantom phone, which is likely to be released in the last quarter of 2018.

Tecno Camon CM (2018) in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria: Specs, Price, Buy, Swap

The Tecno Camon CM  (a.k.a Tecno Camon C11 or CMore) has been launched in Nigeria with another launch in Ghana expected soon. Ever since the camera focused Tecno Camon series was introduced in 2015, over 6 million handsets globally have been sold, helping consumers experience high-quality selfie technology at the touch of a button.

The Tecno Camon CM comes with a 5.65-inch Full Vision display screen dishing out an 18:9 aspect ratio with 720 x 1440 pixels resolution which is very poor since the screen of the CM is significantly bigger than its predecessor, the Camon CX.

Apart from the full vision display screen, the Camon CM runs on Android 7.0, another disappointment, as we have earlier leaked other Tecno phones coming out this year, all of them with Android Oreo 8.1.

The Tecno CSeries is a family of camera-focused phones, but they do good on productivity for the average user, and the Tecno Camon CM looks to be no different.

  • Leaked: TECNO to release at least 3 Oreo Phones early 2018, See Specs

Leaked: TECNO to release at least 3 Oreo Phones early 2018, See Specs

Last year was very good for TECNO. As early as in March 2017, the company released the Tecno Camon CX and the Camon CX Air. As with all Camon Series, the camera was the big takeaway from the CX. Tecno fans across the country are naturally waiting for the release of the successors to the CX and the CX air.

Everyone is looking forward to seeing what TECNO will do this time around. There have been rumours about what the new phone will be and how it will look. However, Mfidie.com can reliably confirm that the Chinese company will soon unveil an 18:9 display smartphone in Ghana. The phone will be the Tecno Camon CM. While we have not yet fully confirmed the specs of the Tecno Camon CM, we do know the Camon series are great on camera but perform relatively poor when it comes to performance specs. The Tecno Camon CM should naturally follow suit.

Oh, this article says 3 Android 8.1 Oreo phones. I have only mentioned one so far. Let’s get to the others!

We went a step further to check from benchmarking platform Geekbench to see if any new TECNO Devices have been tested “in the wild”.

Apparently, there are two or more TECNO Phones in the works: TECNO CA7, the TECNO CA8 and TECNO R8. We are pretty sure that these are just codenames and not the phones’ final names. When you look closely at the specs of the CA7 and the CA8, it is only safe to assume, from precedence, that the two phones are variants of the same model.

Leaked specs of the Tecno R8 as seen on Geekbench.
Leaked specs of the Tecno R8 as seen on Geekbench.

As the phones are yet to be released, it is again safe to assume that the results from Geekbench may not be a 100%, but they shouldn’t differ much from the final product we should see.

Both the Tecno CA7 and CA8 have been listed with a MediaTek MT6763V/V processor, otherwise known as Helio P23, however, the former has 3GB RAM while the latter has 4GB RAM. In terms of software, the pair gets Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box, which should be more than a welcome idea for many fans.

While the Helio P23 processor implies that the Tecno CA7 and CA8 will come just below the Tecno Phantom 8 (which has the Helio P25 and 6GB RAM and is currently the company’s high-end phone), the MediaTek MT6737 chipset on the Tecno R8 suggests that this phone is targeting the entry-level market, just like the Camon CX Air that shares the same processor. On the contrary, the R8 has been listed with a mere 1GB RAM, which is half what is used on the CX Air, but it has the same Android 8.1 Oreo as the others.

  • Surfline Shortcodes, Tips, Tricks, Check and Recharge Balance & More

Surfline Shortcodes, Tips, Tricks, Check and Recharge Balance & More

Surfline launched in August 2014 and has been providing 4G data services to Ghanaians in Accra, Tema and Takoradi ever since. Personally, I got a Surfline Mi-Fi last week because my first choice Internet Service Provider was messing around so much with me.

I initially planned on getting the Surfline SIM Card, but my phone, although 4G did not support the band on which Surfline was operating on. The Surfline Mi-Fi I got cost GHS 250 and came with 5 GB of data. For someone like me, 5 GB seems so little.

In this post, I would want to talk about the shortcodes I found most useful, after using Surfline for close to 14 days. I hope you find them useful too and use them.

How to Check Surfline Data Balance on your phone

One of the easiest ways to check your Surfline balance is by using the Surfline Self Care Portal. However, in my case, I could not register for the portal (something I hope to get fixed asap). I, therefore,e needed to check my balance using my phone. I tested this method on MTN, Tigo, Vodafone and Airtel; it worked perfectly.

To check your Surfline data and cash balance:

    1. Dial *718*77# on your MTN, Tigo, Vodafone and Airtel handset
    2. Enter your Surfline number starting with 025
    3. Choose Option 1 (Check Balance)
    4. Exit the application, wait till you receive a message detailing your balance details.

How to Bundle Surfline and buy credit

Surfline has a range of bundles, which include limited and unlimited, as well as night bundles and bundles for people in a business.

    To bundle your Surfline bundle:

    1. Dial the Surfline Recharge Code *718*77# on your MTN, Tigo, Vodafone and Airtel handset to access the USSD menu
    2. Enter 3 to select the purchase bundle option
    3. Enter your Surfline number starting with 025
    4. Select your preferred bundle category, enter 00 for more bundles
    5. Select your preferred bundle
    6. Exit the application, wait till you receive a message confirming your bundle purchase.

How to Buy Surfline Data Bundle Using Mobile Money

Dial *389*7# to purchase your Surfline data bundle using mobile money.

One of the easiest ways to bundle on Surfline is to use mobile money, with no internet connection available, this option works.

  • Forget Santa! Enjoy up to 70% discount on Jumia this festive season

Forget Santa! Enjoy up to 70% discount on Jumia this festive season

Its barely 4 days away to the end of the year and Jumia Ghana is giving out goodies to online shoppers during this festivity. Just like Santa, Jumia is spreading the discount love to all shoppers to enjoy up to 70% off on items in their ongoing Christmas store sales.

This year’s Christmas Store have all items ranging from fashion, electronics, gifts, home appliances etc. Jumia says ‘the best place to shop for this festivity is Jumia’s Christmas store’.

Jumia wants its customers to shop right during this holidays to avoid overspending hence it has seized the opportunity to educate shoppers on how to make use of some basic shopping tips to avoid them going broke.

    How to Shop Right

    Outline your needs

Knowing what you actually need, is a good way to start your shopping. Pen down all items you are sure to need during this festivity. By making a list, you are fixing your gaze on that which is important so to avoid impulse buying.

    Shop on Budget

Allocate an approximate amount to each item you have purposed to buy. Try your possible best to reduce the possibility of overspending the allocations in the budget. Plan to bargain on items that are ‘bargain-able’ especially if you are shopping from an offline traditional market.

    Stick to your list

Try as much as possible to stick to the list you have created for your shopping. In as much as you might have forgotten to add some items to your shopping list, resist the urge of impulse buying by planning to go without them if possible.

    Look for discounts

Discount shops such as Jumia Ghana can help you save a lot of money this season. Look for discount shops with the quality product and get up to 70% discount off on items on your list.

    Shop online

For convenience, online shops such as Jumia is ready to reduce your stress by asking you to place an online order for those items you need. Your items will be shipped and delivered to your doorstep wherever you are. Since these items will be going to one location, you might get discounts on the delivery. This helps you avoid the hassle of an offline market and help save money for other equally important stuff.

    Shop early, save money

Festivities often affect changes in the price of items. Most times, because items are high in demand, prices tend to shoot up. To avoid its impact on your budget, it is advisable to shop early to save money; because you might not get all the discounts you might be aiming at on all the items you have on your list.

    Take advantage of Promotional sales

One way to save big is to take advantage of promotional sales that abound during festivities. Both offline and online shops will be ready to give huge discounts on flash sales and Xmas sales. Prioritize these outlets and get your needs sorted for the season.

    Buy a gift for someone

Selflessness is the blueprint of love that Christmas brings. If you aren’t sure what to buy, you can play the ‘guess what I bought for you this Christmas’ game. The person will be eager to know what you bought. Let the person guess and say all that he or she needs for Christmas. Then you have a fair idea what the person wants. Choose from the most affordable and buy for the person.

    Budget for uncertainties

Uncertainties are unplanned activities whether pleasant or unpleasant. To be on the safer side, set aside an amount to rely on should there be any unplanned activity. This will go a long way to help you in the next few weeks of the next month if that budget ends up untouched.

3 Apps every Ghanaian needs for the Christmas and New Year

    Merry Christmas!

That time of the year is here. Christians and the world at large are celebrating Christmas and the New Year. Here in Ghana, Christmas is never complete without a lot of messages and well wishes. There are also a lot of parties and get-togethers.

During festive times like this, time with Family and Friends is most important. However, you can not leave your technology behind. Mfidie.com brings to you 3 apps you need to have installed on your phone to really enjoy and celebrate the festive season.

If you know of any other app relevant for the season, leave a comment below.

Ride-Hailing apps: Taxify, Uru or Uber

Man must look sharp and with so many ride-hailing apps in Ghana, it is almost difficult to go with just one. I have installed 3 of these apps because, like any rational consumer, I want value for money.

Whenever I am in a fix, and want a ride, especially in this festive season, I just check the prices on all there of them and choose the one that makes more sense.

Keep one or more of these apps close, since the Troski and taxi drivers can start pricing outrageously.

    New Year and Christmas Wishes

This new app has tons of Christmas wishes to send and share with loved ones. Christmas wishes allow you to express love and sincere thoughts in just the right way to anyone you know. However, here in Ghana, there are a lot of Pasco messages that are brought back each year. This app makes life easier by providing special messages that are different and unique.

The app works even if you don’t have internet access. Once downloaded, you can share wishes and greetings with your beloved ones via SMS, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.
