How to use less mobile data when browsing on your phone
When was the last time you bundled mobile data? How long did it take? Well, for a lot of people, data just runs too fast, and we end up blaming our Internet Service Providers. Like I said in a post sometime back, I don’t believe Internet Service Providers steal our data.

Data usage is all about habits and a few tricks. I used to be very frustrated with how my mobile data was running until I reviewed my habits.

The key to saving your data usage is knowing that apps have become more data-hungry and are constantly pushing new versions for an update.

Earlier, web surfing used to be mostly in text. Now, video streaming services have gained widespread popularity, and social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram have also integrated video services as a mainstream appeal.

It has become increasingly difficult to reduce data usage on Android and iOS.

However, by adopting a few strategies (mostly available in the apps themselves) and changing a few habits, you can save more data than you think. We will look at how to use less data when browsing the web generally and also focus on WhatsApp’s data-saving features.

Here is how to use less mobile data on phone:

Use data compression in Google Chrome

You know the Google Chrome browser right? It’s one of the browsers I recommend for mobile users.

Google Chrome is one of the most popular Android browsers. It has an inbuilt feature that can significantly reduce data consumption on Android.

When data compression is turned on, all of your traffic is passed through a proxy run by Google. This means that your data is compressed and optimized (size reduced) before being sent to your phone. This results in lower data consumption and also speeds up the loading of pages without any significant change in web content.

To use data compression
- Open Chrome
- Tap on the 3-dot menu on the upper right corner
- Tap on Settings and scroll down to Data Saver.
- There you can tap on the upper right corner to toggle Data Saver on.

Watch and configure WhatsApp

Yeah, WhatsApp. It’s very popular here in Ghana and comes with a few settings to reduce data consumption. You can also change a few habits on WhatsApp and you will be using much fewer data. Let’s look at which settings and habits to change.

Let WhatsApp save data during calls

Did you know WhatsApp has an option to save data during chats and calls? It allows you to lower the amount of data it uses during voice calls.

To activate the data saving option, enter Settings, then Data Usage. In the options, check Low Data Usage.

If you experience low-quality calls after activating the setting (less likely), you can turn it back on.

Turn off auto-downloading of media

You can set WhatsApp to download multimedia files automatically only when on Wi-Fi. This helps you save data and prevents the downloading of unnecessary media files, especially if you are in a lot of groups.

In the Settings > Data Usage menu, there is a section for Media auto-download. Selecting ‘When using mobile data’ gives you a menu to check whether to download images, audio, videos, and documents or none of these (by keeping all options unchecked).

Cut down on WhatsApp Status

This is not a setting, but rather a habit. You need to cut down on the number of WhatsApp Status you watch in a day.

When you first get the status feature in the WhatsApp update

For a lot of people, they don’t realise watching videos on status is almost identical to streaming video on youtube – In both instances, you are viewing video content from the internet. Like the earlier part of this article stated, watching videos online takes up a lot of data, so limiting your WhatsApp status viewing would drastically save you a lot of data.

Mobile Money Is Not Enough: Why you Need a Bank Account

The Mobile Money service is one that has come to stay especially amongst the Ghanaian citizenry.

For the past eleven years, the mobile money industry has dominated the Ghanaian payment ecosystem with over 20 million people currently using the service in the country.

In spite of the numerous advantages of the mobile money platform which includes payment of bills, instant money transfer, quick payments and purchase of airtime and data bundles, the Mobile Money service is not entirely a replacement for the traditional banking system.

In this article, I shall give you reasons why you still need to have a bank account even if you have all the various mobile money platforms available in Ghana.

The Banking system in itself is a major part of the global financial system and it has been for the past so many years.

The introduction of the mobile money service was only to make banking easier and faster. Therefore, there are still instances where one needs to have an actual bank account to do some things.

Transferring Huge Amounts Of Money

Except you are a Mobile Money agent which also comes with its limitations, you can only send up to 5,000 cedis within every 24 hours on your mobile money account.

This means if you wish to send money beyond this amount, maybe from 10,000 Cedis and above, the Mobile Money platform may not be a perfect option for you especially if you are not a registered merchant or agent.

For this reason, you may have to fall back on the traditional banking system where you can send as much money as possible by depositing directly into the account of the recipient.

This is one of the major reasons why you may not be able to use your mobile money entirely without periodically returning to the bricks and mortar banking halls once upon a long while.

Seeking Huge Loans For Business Or Personal Needs

The Mobile money system is a near-perfect replacement for the traditional banking system however, an oldie is always an oldie.

With your Mobile Money, especially the MTN Mobile Money, users can borrow money from their wallets based on their transactions and how long they’ve been using their mobile money wallets.

While this is true, an individual can only take up to 1,000 cedis per mobile money account at a time. This makes mobile money loans a short term loan for settling urgent issues.

However, for those seeking to raise good capital for their businesses and some other personal needs, the need for the banking system is not even up for debate.

They need to run back to their various banks for support in such situations since banks are able to give out loans to the tune of millions of cedis.

Limits On Mobile Money Wallets

Depending on the type of Mobile Money account you have, there are limits on the volume of money you can have in your wallet at any given time.

For most people, the limit is pegged at 10,000 cedis while others have their limits pegged at 20,000 cedis and 50,000 cedis respectively.

This means that if you intend saving money in your mobile money wallet, after some time, when your balance exceeds the limit, you would have to go back to your bank.

So, Mobile Money is in essence, a temporary way of saving money for long-term goals.

International Money Transfers

While there are third party software and websites which enable people to send and receive money internationally using their mobile money wallets, it is largely impossible to do that directly from your mobile money wallet.

For the sake of trust and security, using such third party applications for such money transfers may not always work especially when there are huge amounts of money involved.

So, in such situations, the safest and most convenient solution is the bank for which you need to have a bank account.

Conclusion

In spite of all the good things that the mobile money service has brought to the Ghanaian population especially in terms of payments and money transfers, the Mobile Money platform is not a complete replacement for the old banking system.

There are still reasons why you need to have bank accounts to supplement your mobile money wallets.

Ghana has 6 types of driving license and they are :

A – License A is for those who drive Motorcycles.

C – Is for drivers who can drive buses and moderate goods. Must contain 1-45 passengers.

D – Drives coaches and heavy vehicles, buses and must contain 1-65 passengers.

E – License E is for those who can drive industrial equipment like harvesters, bulldozers, forklifts and many more.

F – Drivers who are eligible for licence F are those who can drive heavy carrying vehicles like articulators and many more.

To be eligible in applying for driving licence in Ghana:
- One must be above 18 years.
- Must have basic education (BECE), adult education or must be able to read and write.
- You must go through a 48-hour training with a DVLA authorized driving school before you will be eligible to get a driving license.
After going through the needed procedures you are going to have your driving licence processed in two weeks time.

When you finally get your driving license it becomes valid for two years starting from the date issued.

Monthly Limit: GHS 20,000 (The total amount of money that can be sent or received through your mobile money account in a month).

Total Balance Limit: GHS 10,000 (The highest amount of money you can have in your Mobile Money account at any given time. )

Tier Two

Of the two categories, Tier two is the higher tier and it comes with the following limits:

Daily Limit: GHS 5,000

Monthly Limit : GHS 50,000

Account Balance Limit: GHS 20,000

How To Check Your Mobile Money Limit

To confirm which of the two tiers you’re on and how much of your limits you’ve used already, follow the steps below:
1. Dial *170# on your phone to open the mobile money portal
2. Dial 6 to select ‘My Wallet’
3. Dial # to view the next page
4. Dial 8 to check your wallet limits
5. Enter your MOMO pin
On the next page, you should see a detailed summary of your daily and monthly limits. This includes the amount you’ve used up and how much you have left of your limits.

Like any other financial institution or service in Ghana, the Mobile Money service comes with a set of rules and regulations.

One of the regulations governing the service is the Wallet limit. Based on the level of your mobile money account, you have daily, monthly and total account balance limits.

Most often, when we have a new phone, it is usually difficult to configure the internet settings and we are left with no choice but to go to the Customer Service of the Network Operator for your phones and other devices to be configured. Well, I bring you the recommended internet settings for all the networks in Ghana.

For android users, you can just use the “General” settings that I have used on every android phone and it works perfectly.

How to set up internet settings in Ghana
1. Go to your device’s settings
2. Go to wireless and settings
3. Select Mobile networks
4. Select Access Points Names
5. Create new APN by taping the “+” sign or pressing Menu and selecting new APN
6. Select Name and enter “General”
7. Select APN and enter “internet”
8. Save the Settings
9. Activate to use new Access Point Name

How to Subscribe to MTN Jara in Ghana

Subscribing to the MTN Jara promotion is easy. All you have to do is dial the code *5055# and follow the prompts. The Jara is an auto-renewal promotion, therefore you will continue to be deducted 50 pesewas every day until you deactivate the service. If you activate the service while in any of the promotional zone regions (Upper East, Upper West, Nothern, Volta and Brong Ahafo), you can still make free unlimited calls to someone who is in the non-promotional regions (Ashanti, Western, Eastern, Central, Greater Accra).

The promotion automatically renews at 12 am each night if the subscriber has at least 50 pesewas of credit available on their line.

I feel MTN Ghana has introduced the Jara service in these 5 regions because residents of the regions do not make a lot of calls.
