Vice President Launches 2018 Cyber Security Awareness Campaign

A report by the Center for Strategic And International Studies (CSIS) and McAfee has revealed that cybercrime cost the world 608 billion USD in 2017 alone according to Dr Mahamadu Bawumia at the launch of the National Cyber Security Awareness Campaign and the National Cyber Security Awareness month dubbed “A Safer Digital Ghana” at the Kofi Annan ICT Training Center in Accra.

Dr Bawumia said that a robust digital ecosystem is essential in achieving the Ghana Beyond Aid Agenda. The report highlighted major concerns especially in the developing world captured in a quote “the relationship of the developing world to cyber-crime is complex as the mobile interconnections that have brought the internet millions are easily exploited the countries with the greatest losses as a percentage of national income are in the mid-tier nations; those that are digitised but not yet fully capable in cybersecurity “.

His Excellency said that the awareness month is to bring to the attention of the public, the already critical importance of security within the cyber security, the cyber ecosystem of Ghana as well as the profound impact of dynamic technology in our lives.

He said, “Ghana is part of the global village that is pushing for connectivity in an increasingly digital world”. Daily connectivity, he added, has become an essential commodity but increased interconnections mean vulnerability to cyber attacks.

He said that attackers usually aim at accessing, changing or distorting sensitive information, extortion of monies from others or interruption of business processes.

“As we become more reliant on a digital economy, we must have a collective responsibility to create awareness as an imperative for ensuring that our digital world is secure and mutually beneficial to all users,” he said. Dr Bawumia added said that government has made fundamental changes and improvements in a number of ways in using digital technology such as the National Digital Address System, Mobile Money Interoperability System (MMI), National Identification Card System, Paperless Port System as well as a number of e-government initiatives such as e-justice and criminal justice case tracking system, e-immigration and so on.

Minister of Communication, Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful said that the use of ICT has seen tremendous growth with the most vibrant users between the ages of 18 to 28 years. She said that a Global Cyber Security Index report in 2016 estimates that about 12 billion devices will be connected to the internet by 2020.

An annual report by the Global Digital Agencies revealed that about 10.11m Ghanaians are reported to be using the internet representing 35 per cent of the population.

She said that appropriate legal regimes are needed especially in developing countries like Ghana to combat cybercrime. “It is clearly evident that our region has also witnessed massive improvements in the use of internet and digital technology in the past few years” she added.

“Statistics released by Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement System and Bank of Ghana indicate that over almost a million transactions were recorded through the MMI as at the end of August 2018, barely 3 months after the system was launched” she stated.

Mrs Owusu Ekuful said the Ministry facilitated a Maturity Assessment conducted by the World Bank in collaboration with the University of Oxford placed Ghana at the formative stage in the cyber security level. The report, she said, identified the lack of awareness in cybersecurity as a major stumbling block as well as the instances of exploitation of children online, fake news alerts, online scams especially with the

identities of Members of parliaments, mobile money fraud and so on. She asked that the National Budget make provisions for cybersecurity.

The Minister for Information designate Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said the cybersecurity program has come at a crucial time in our development where there is widespread agitation on the effects of the cyber world and cyber manipulation which pose as a major threat to national security.

“In Ghana specifically, while we are making efforts to deepen internet access, constitutions, individuals and businesses, the state is also making efforts to digitise major aspects of our national life. Government’s sensitisation agenda in key public institutions is aimed at efficiency, service delivery and consistent actions in a global digital age.

He added that significant achievements have been recorded with the introduction of Paperless Port Process, MMI and many others which he described as catalysts to development. He said that increasing risks inherent in the cyber world call for increasing need to hasten cyber robustness in Ghana.

Others present at the launch were the Deputy Minister of Communications Mr George Andah and Mr Vincent Sowah Odotei, Minister for Interior Mr Ambrose Dery, National Cyber Security Advisor, Mr Albert Antwi Bosiako, National Cyber Security Technical Working Group, other international and local stakeholders, security personnel and the media.

  • MoneyGram and Zeepay just made remmitance to mobile wallets in Ghana possible

MoneyGram and Zeepay just made remmitance to mobile wallets in Ghana possible

Cross-border payments brand MoneyGram is now working with Ghanaian fintech Zeepay to provide remittance services to mobile money users in Ghana.

The service, according to MoneyGram, will make it possible for customers to send funds to any mobile wallet in the country. This includes MTN Mobile Money, Vodafone Cash, Zeepay wallets, and the AirtelTigo Money Wallet.

MoneyGram and Zeepay inked an agreement to launch the service in the country with the Director for Africa at MoneyGram John Gely signing the deal on behalf of the company.

Zeepay Ghana Limited’s Managing Director Andrew Takyi-Appiah told reporters that their partnership with the money transfer company is a response to the wide use of technology in the country. Takyi-Appiah added that it will contribute to financial inclusion, a major challenge for many people in Ghana.

The government is keen on improving banking for its citizens, according to reports, considering that around 50% still remain unbanked.

Based on an interview with Ghana’s Finance Minister Sampson Akligoh, the government wants to achieve 90% financial inclusion by 2020.

The Finance Department recently approved a bill promoting payment systems and services. The development will reportedly be presented for ratification soon.

Zeepay and MoneyGram’s partnership will not only make sending money to Ghana a lot cheaper and more accessible, it will also pave the way for other fintechs to enter the country, observers say. MoneyGram’s Regional Director in West Africa Patrick Appiah said that the brand desires to be at the forefront when it comes to digital financial services.

Africa remains one of MoneyGram’s key markets. In 2017 alone, Ghana received a whopping $2.2 billion in remittances, an amount that increased an estimated 4.3% based on numbers from the year before.

According to World Bank data, Ghana ranks as the fifth largest recipient of remittances in the continent. Remittances going to the country come from migrants living and working in Nigeria, the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany and the United States.

  • Hello Tonaton, Where is the Search Bar?

Hello Tonaton, Where is the Search Bar?

Tonaton is Ghana’s biggest classified site and one of the most visited sites in the country, in the top 25. Somewhere last year, I made an uninteresting comparison between Tonaton and OLX as well as gave tips on buying from the site.

However, although buying and selling are what Tonaton is primarily set up for. However, there are a variety of users on the site.

I am one of those extreme users of the site. I primarily use it for price comparison and price checks.

Earlier today, I visited the Tonaton website to check for the prices of Playstation Consoles.

So after searching and seeing an ad I wanted to check out, I naturally clicked.

Below is the screen I was greeted with.

Satisfied with the information gathered, I decided to search again for another type of PS4.

Now look back at the image above. There is no search bar.

No Problem, I clicked on the Tonaton logo and behold, no search bar on the homepage too.

For a classifieds site, primarily, people should be searching for stuff and you should make this possible for them. It doesn’t really give users a lot of comforts if they have to navigate two or three pages just to search for something.

Hello Tonaton, kindly add back the search bar. I understand that you may want people to stay more on your pages to view all the ads, but “hiding” the search bar does not seem fair.

Maybe it’s just an A/B testing, maybe it’s a final push. Whatever it is, it is frustrating. When I visit Tonaton, I want to search and find goods and services, not to search for the search bar.

  • Ghana is 2nd Worldwide in Search for Bitcoin online

Ghana is 2nd Worldwide in Search for Bitcoin online

The US dominates the markets for Bitcoin in terms of trading volume, a number of exchanges, ICOs, and other such blockchain-related statistics.

However, many wouldn’t know that it falls behind in search interest. Japan is also highly ranked amongst the most crypto-friendly nations. But, when it comes to search interest on Google, both these countries fall far behind lesser developed nations like South Africa and Ghana.

Google Trends data reveals that, so far in 2018 (YTD as of September 3rd, 2018), South Africa leads ‘Bitcoin’ search interest. Ghana stands second with Slovenia third.

Google Trends ranked these nations on the basis of a scoring system on a scale from 0 to 100.

Here, 100 is the location with the most popularity as a fraction of total searches in that region. Similarly, 50 indicates a region with half the popularity. Regions with not enough data for the term are assigned a value of 0.

South Africa, with a 100 score commands almost double the search interest of the term ‘Bitcoin’ in the US, where the score stands at 52. Ghana is second with 75 along with Slovenia (also at 75). Japan scored the lowest, with just 2 points.

Other prominent nations such as Switzerland, the UK, and Hong Kong, scored 59, 44, and 37 respectively. Saudi Arabia scored 13 and Russia 7.

In the beginning of the year, Bitrazzi highlighted how Bitcoin bulls against the dollar doves indicate an opportunity for Africa to lead the case for implementing Bitcoin as a global reserve currency.

In April, they highlighted 4 of the many use cases where blockchain is already transforming Africa.

The bottom line is that the African continent does hold a lot of potential and promise for blockchain and its flagship cryptocurrency, Bitcoin.

  • BIMA Doctor App to be launched in September 2018

BIMA Doctor App to be launched in September 2018

The prestigious event took place on August 25th at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra, honouring innovative players in the healthcare industry. The West African Clinical Alliance recognized BIMA for its pioneering work in improving access to quality health care through the use of mobile technology.

According to the OECD, there is at most 1 qualified physician per 10,000 people in Ghana, and the combination of soaring population and rising urbanization is driving higher demand for health care services, particularly as non-communicable disease such as diabetes and hypertension continue to rise. In Ghana, it is common for patients to travel considerable distances or sacrifice hours waiting in a clinic before seeing a doctor.

This, along with the high cost of consultations, often prevent people from seeking medical help. In this context, telemedicine provides an opportunity to relieve the burden on the hospital system and to provide a safe and confidential way for citizens to obtain medical advice, wherever they are in the country.

Launched in 2015, BIMA Doctor is a pioneer of the telemedicine industry in Ghana and is the first and currently only licensed provider in the country. It began as a pure medical advisory service, allowing subscribers to access unlimited consultations with licensed medical practitioners over the phone for only GHC 3 monthly.

In the past 3 years, the service has evolved into a full-fledged telemedicine service, offering access to both generalists and specialists, e-prescriptions via SMS as well as a laboratory referral service providing discounts to subscribers. Just recently, BIMA Doctor has enrolled all customers onto a Health Coaching Programme delivering targeted health content via SMS and recorded voice messages.

Christina Tuemmers, mHealth Division Manager, explains “We are honoured that our contribution to improving access to affordable and quality healthcare has been recognized. The award is a major step in recognizing telemedicine as a standalone health service”. Dr. David Sunu, Chief Medical Officer of BIMA Doctor, adds ”BIMA is at the forefront of legitimate telemedicine practice in Ghana. This award is a confirmation of our high clinical standards and customer service that underpin the delivery of the BIMA Doctor Service”.

Damien Gueroult, Country Manager, reveals “We believe that the roaring mobile penetration and increasing data usage in Ghana will create a vast opportunity to reach the mass-market who have previously been excluded from health services and in particular preventive care. Just next month we will launch the BIMA Doctor mobile App which will offer additional value-added services to our customers”.

The BIMA Doctor App will be launched in September of this year through which subscriber can access and manage their medical records, locate the nearest health facility and talk to the BIMA Doctor medical team by phone or chat.
