  • How to avoid being a Victim of MTN Mobile Money Fraud (Safety Tips)

How to avoid being a Victim of MTN Mobile Money Fraud (Safety Tips)

MTN Mobile Money is undoubtedly the biggest mobile payment solution available in Ghana today.

What started as a small convenient way of conducting business transactions has rapidly changed into a platform capable of doing a bit more. Every new day, people are registering on the MTN Mobile Money platform.

As it is with any service, with the benefits, come the bad guys, who are looking for ways to make money the easiest way.

A lot of people have shared experiences with people who have been frauded on MTN Mobile Money to the extent that some believe it is an inside job at MTN.

However, we are not here to go into those details. Today, we look at safety tips to guide us so that we are not caught up in the den of the fraudsters.

Here are safety tips on how to guard yourself against MTN Mobile Money Fraud:

Keep your MTN Mobile Money PIN Private

Yes, this is the number one tip. Your Mobile Money PIN is for just you and you are not obliged to share it with anyone. Most people have claimed that personnel from MTN called to ask for their Mobile Money PIN.

Man distressed after giving out his MTN Mobile Money PIN and suffering stress.
Never give out your MTN Mobile Money Fraud

From statements that MTN has released over the years, it is clear that Mobile Money agents and MTN workers are not to ask you for your PIN to initiate any transaction on your behalf.

As a matter of security, you are not to share your PIN with your Family and Friends. Even if you do, you are to change it immediately.

Keeping your PIN private will help to safeguard you against many of the fraud stories we hear concerning MTN MoMo.

Choose a strong PIN for your Mobile Money account

I believe hackers have not gotten way smarter over the years, it’s just people becoming more foolish and relaxed over security issues.

When it comes to Mobile Money PINS, the situation is no different.

You find people using their year of birth or the current year or a sequence. Researchers at the data analysis firm Data Genetics have advised people to avoid birthdate, 1234 and 8068. However, you should also avoid a sequence like 2345, 6699, 2244, 9876 etc.

You should use a PIN that would be difficult for people to guess, but easy to remember. If you currently have a weak PIN, you can change it.

How to Change MTN Mobile Money Pin

    1. Dial the MTN Mobile Money short code *170#
    2. Select Wallet
    3. Choose Change MM PIN
    4. Enter your old PIN
    5. Enter your new PIN to set and confirm

Verify Phone Calls and Messages purportedly from MTN

Almost all of the Mobile Money fraud stories that I have heard usually stem from either a phone call or a text message or both.

Keep in mind that MTN will send Mobile Money SMS via the nameMobileMoney. Any message from suspicious phone numbers regarding your mobile money account is probably fake. They mostly follow up with instructions, which you should never pay heed to.

Beware of scam calls asking you to send MTN mobile money to their accounts to receive cash prizes or asking for your account details.

Whenever in doubt, don’t hesitate to call MTN customer service number 100. Most importantly, why do you think you have won a promo when you never participated in one?

Confirm transactions and don’t hand your phone over to Mobile Money agents

About confirmations, when you make a deposit at any MTN mobile money merchant shop or agent, make sure you receive a confirmation text before you leave.

Check to be sure the text received is from MobileMoney and has the correct amount stated.

Also, when withdrawing money, confirm that the name of the MoMo Merchant is what is actually displayed before you enter your pin to confirm the transaction.

Mobile Money agent with phone in hand
Confirm all transactions before approving them.

You shouldn’t give your mobile phone to agents to do a transaction on your behalf. If you give your phone to an agent to initiate a transaction on your behalf, you expose yourself to being defrauded.

However, for those who don’t know how to read or write, this may not be possible. Such people should try to go to the agent with someone they trust or work with only “trusted Mobile Money agents”, although this is not entirely fool-proof.

Finally, if you suspect any fraudulent activity on your wallet, the best thing is to Call MTN on 100 or visit their nearest Customer Service Centre to make the report or use the online portal. Like MTN Ghana has said in their numerous ” Anti Mobile Money Fraud” campaigns, “Don’t be a MUGU.”

Have you ever fallen victim to mobile money fraud or do you know someone who has been frauded via MTN Mobile Money? Share your experience.

  • How To Activate MTN Sunday Special For Unlimited Calls

How To Activate MTN Sunday Special For Unlimited Calls

Weekends are for family and friends in most parts of Ghana.

It’s either you go clubbing with your close friends and lover or you get chatty on long calls or catch some fun with family right at home.

If you prefer to make calls on weekends especially Sundays, you would know how expensive it could actually be to make calls on Sundays.

If you are a beneficiary of the MTN Jara offer, you may probably be thinking that it doesn’t matter since you pay 54 pesewas to make free calls throughout the day.

Unfortunately, that isn’t true. The Jara offer only works from Monday to Saturday. So if you are relying on the Jara Offer to make calls on Sunday, you might as well want to check your balance after each call.

However, this should not be so much of a worry to you. MTN has a special package for all who enjoy making calls on weekends especially Sundays.

    What Is MTN Sunday Special?

The MTN Sunday special is a special call and SMS bundle which allows MTN users to call and text other MTN subscribers throughout the day and talk for as much as they wish.

In this article, we shall look at how to subscribe to this package and make unlimited calls on Sunday.

Who Can Use MTN Sunday Special?

The MTN Sunday special is available to all MTN Prepaid customers who wish to make long calls on Sundays and pay a largely discounted price for making those unlimited calls on Sundays.

What it means is that all fixed and post-paid lines cannot benefit from this offer.

Also, this offer is for anyone using an MTN Prepaid Simcard in Ghana irrespective of the region or town.

How To Subscribe To MTN Sunday Special Offer

To subscribe to the MTN Sunday Special Offer, there are two methods: Using the SMS method or using the shortcode method.

You can subscribe to MTN Sunday Special in Ghana offer via the steps below:

    1. Dial *5050#
    2. Select option 1 for Free MTN calls, SMS & 20MB Data till 11:59 PM on Sunday for GHS 1.09 or Select option 2 for Free MTN calls & SMS till 5:59 PM on Sunday for 54 Pesewas.
    3. Press 1 to accept the offer you have selected.

The amount should be deducted from your airtime balance immediately. However, if it is not yet a Sunday before you subscribed, the service would not be available to you until the next Sunday. So you can subscribe ahead on weekdays and use the service on the following Sunday.

If you want to subscribe via SMS, do the following:

    1. Open your text message app.
    2. Enter ‘START’ in the message column and send to the shortcode ‘5050’
    3. Select the offer you’re going for by replying 1 or 2 to the next response you get.

How To Deactivate MTN Sunday Special Offer

The MTN Sunday special offer comes with an automatic renewal policy which makes the service to be renewed automatically on every Sunday for as long as you have enough airtime in your account.

Sometimes, this can be very annoying since one may not want to renew your offer but MTN does it automatically for you.

But, there is a way out. That is for you to first withdraw yourself from the offer before MTN thinks of renewing it for you.

To deactivate the MTN Sunday Special offer, follow the steps below:

    1. Open your text messaging app.
    2. Enter ‘STOP’ in the text box.
    3. Send it to the shortcode ‘5050’
    4. Reply 1 to confirm the deactivation.

    Conclusion

The MTN Sunday special offer is one of the most-used MTN promotion packages since it offers people the chance to talk to family and friends for a very long duration at a very cheap rate ever.

If you are one of those people who make many calls on Sunday or you just want to make some long calls on the coming Sunday, you should try subscribing to this MTN offer. It gives you so many results for a small payment.

  • How To Stop MTN Data auto renewal In Ghana

How To Stop MTN Data auto renewal In Ghana

The Automatic renewal or auto-renewal feature is purposely provided by network service providers to enable subscribers to get their data packages renewed as soon as they reach the end of their validity.

While rollover or automatic renewal enables you to keep the remaining of your existing data while adding a newer volume and extending your expiry date, this may not be ideal for everyone.

For most people, unfortunately, they are unable to buy airtime on their phones regularly and that makes it difficult for the auto-renewals to go through most times.

Even when they go through, they go a long way to drain the airtime wallets of such subscribers.

For this reason, some people may want to deactivate the automatic renewal option for their data packages.

In this article, we shall look at the steps involved in deactivating the auto-renewal function on your MTN Data bundles.

    Deactivating MTN Ghana Data Bundles

To deactivate the automatic renewal of all MTN Ghana data packages aside from the fibre broadband and Turbonet data packages, just text ‘Stop’ to 138.

The MTN Turbonet data packages do not expire anymore, hence making it unnecessary for automatic renewals to be made available. MTN Ghana has, therefore, removed the auto-renewal service from the Turbonet USSD Menu.

    Conclusion:

With this method, you can deactivate automatic renewals for the following MTN Data packages: MTN Special offers, Midnight bundles, Daily bundles, weekly bundles, monthly bundles, kokrooko bundles, MTN Basic Packages, social media bundles and video bundles.

This method will only work if only you have already subscribed to any of the data bundles listed above. If you have not subscribed to any of them, please do not try the deactivation. Also, if you do not have any problems with the automatic renewal, you should not attempt this method since trying it may make you lose existing data upon its expiry.

  • 0244300000 is the only secure number from MTN Ghana; Don’t fall for scammers

0244300000 is the only secure number from MTN Ghana; Don’t fall for scammers

Fraudsters nowadays have been finding new ways of stealing from MTN subscribers, what they mostly tell you is that they are calling from MTN office and then will continue with their usual tricks.

There have been cases on which subscribers have been complaining about how MTN staff will be calling them asking them to turn off their phone for some time because there is ongoing maintenance.

Some fraudsters will also call to tell you that you have won a prize on their ongoing promotion and he or she is calling you to guide you on steps to follow in order to receive your gift.

What you need to be aware of is that MTN Ghana will only call you with 0244300000 to either give information or to discuss an issue with you.

When does MTN make such calls?

They mostly call you when you win a promotion or you have reported a problem and they are calling to help you out or ask you to give them feedback of the problem you are facing using their network.

I remember asking MTN customer care on Twitter on how I can change the name on my sim card as my sim card was already registered when I bought it, I then received a reply from them and the person was asking for my number to further assist me.

Within minutes I received a call from MTN office number 0244300000 and he first asked me some questions and then later discussed with me the documents I need to make available before visiting any of their branches to do the change of name.

What time will you receive such calls from MTN customer service number 0244300000?

MTN starts work from 9 AM to 5 PM from Monday to Friday and on Saturday closes at 12 PM. So you will mostly receive a call from them on working days, but if it is a critical situation or maybe you reported a problem to them and they need to call you to assist you, then they will call anytime but with this number (0244300000) and not any random number.

Here are the things to take note of:

    • Anytime you win a promotion, MTN will only call you with their official line 0244300000.
    • MTN will never ask you to type in some code, install any third-party app to redeem your gift or visit a website aside their official website.
    • All MTN promotions together with its winners’ numbers can be found on their official website mtn.com.gh

    Conclusion

MTN  will only call you with their customer service number 0244300000 and not any other number. If you receive any call from someone claiming to be calling from MTN without calling using this number, then please don’t pay attention to him or her and kindly report that number by either dialling 100 or 0244300000.

  • How To Borrow Airtime And Data On MTN Ghana More Than Once

How To Borrow Airtime And Data On MTN Ghana More Than Once

More than often, we run out of airtime in the middle of a call or texting.

Usually, one would be left with much pain when this happens.

Most times, you’ll have to resort to your mobile money wallet, thanks to MTN Mobile money.

But, what happens if you don’t have a mobile money wallet or in the worst-case scenario, your mobile money wallet is also empty?

That brings a challenge. Perhaps it’s even deep at night or a place far from town.

How do you get airtime to finish what you started?

You know, leaving someone at the peak of a conversation could go down as a bad vibe at the end of the day.

You certainly don’t want to create any negative impression. So you want to be sure to catch up as soon as possible.

Well, MTN Ghana foresaw this problem occurring and hence decided to help you with the MTN Xtratime service.

    What Is MTN Xtra Time?

The MTN Xtra time service is a service by MTN Ghana which gives active MTN customers the chance to borrow airtime and data and payback later at a 10% rate.

With the Xtratime service, you are given a limit based on how much airtime you buy and how much calls you make.

So, this service is tailor-made to fit every user’s pocket.

How To Subscribe For The MTN Xtratime

    1. Dial *506#

    2. Select your preferred amount (If you qualify, you should see a list of amounts)

    3. You can press 4 for more options

    4. To get data, you can select the “request a data advance” option

    5. Select your preferred data bundle

    6. Press 1 to confirm

You should receive your data or airtime afterwards.

Who Is Eligible For MTN Xtratime

Just as any other credit facility in the world, one needs to satisfy certain laid down conditions in order to be able to borrow airtime from MTN Ghana.

    1. The sim card must be a prepaid card
    2. Your main account balance shouldn’t be more than 4 cedis at the time of the request.
    3. Your sim card must be properly registered
    4. You must have recharged your line at least every month in the past 6 months.
    5. You must have a certain volume of average airtime usage in a month.

If you satisfy all the above conditions, then you are qualified for the MTN Xtratime service.

Meanwhile, it is important for you to know that MTN reserves the right to indicate if you are qualified or not.

    Conclusion

If you are a regular airtime user, you could get an advance of up to 10 Ghana cedía worth of airtime from MTN.

Also, if you use data often, you can get 300MB and above data advance from MTN Ghana, using this service.

All you need to do is to make sure that you satisfy all the conditions above.

Finally, provided you took an airtime advance which isn’t up to your given limit, you can take another advance until you reach your limit.

So, if your limit is 5 cedis and you took 2 cedis, you can go back for another 2 cedis without first paying for the initial 2 cedis. Same way, you can request for data advance in place of the second 2 cedis airtime.

But once you reach your limit, you can’t get the data advance either.

  • How To Subscribe For The MTN 141 Service For Cheap Data

Everything is digital now. The whole world is virtually becoming a digital world with the internet becoming more popular than it has ever been at any point.

As such, the demand for internet data packages have reached an all-time high.

In a country such as Ghana where data is considered to be unnecessarily expensive, one thing we all hope for is some “free data” or cool data promotion.

Why MTN Ghana 141 Service Is Your Solution

Well, if you’re a student who uses the internet so much for your research works, or a business person who relies on the Internet to make money, or that young person who loves to stream videos, you know exactly what I’m saying here.

And oh, if you’re someone who finds pleasure in liking the latest gist on social media and commenting on photos, you are definitely part of this.

Chances are that you have probably contacted those guys in WhatsApp groups saying they sell data at a cheaper price and you are supposed to pay so they send you the data.

It’s very sad but I’m sure some of them have even duped (chopped) you before.

Well, MTN Ghana has some good news for you.

With the MTN Just4U data package, you get to enjoy cool data packages designed for you alone, based on your data use throughout the week.

    4. Select 1 to confirm your choice
    5. Press okay to accept the data.

    Conclusion

This is one of the best data packages you can subscribe to as an MTN Ghana subscriber. Even though most of the data packages here last from between 3 days to one week, the volume is usually huge and good for heavy data users.

Personally, I go for the 2.5GB for 12 Cedis Package which helps me in my research works.

Also, do remember that this data package is not transferable. And you can only buy on the sim card you use to subscribe. You cannot buy a different number using this service.

The service is made to suit every sim card as per the usage metrics.

I hope this data pack works for you and saves you from the hands of those unscrupulous “data boys”. Kindly share other affordable data packages you know of in the comment box beneath the post.

  • 4 ways To Know If An MTN Mobile Money Call Or SMS Is Fake

4 ways To Know If An MTN Mobile Money Call Or SMS Is Fake

The technological advancement we have all been praying for didn’t come at a cheap cost, after all.

Following the tremendous growth of the mobile money industry, many scammers have been brewed and this has become a threat to the service in Ghana especially.

In this article, we shall discuss four ways to point out a fake Mobile Money call or SMS.

It has become increasingly difficult to differentiate true MTN mobile money notifications from fake ones but with this article, you’re on your way to 98.9% safety.

Let’s jump right into action now:

MTN Mobile Money Transaction Codes Contain 10-digits

Any true MTN mobile money SMS sent by MTN Ghana to your phone after a successful transaction should contain a Transaction code which is not more than 10-digits.

Most of the crooks who try to dupe others of their hard-earned currency via their mobile money accounts, just type transaction codes as they do not have the power to distribute transaction codes. In doing this, they mostly end up typing fewer or more digits than actually required.

So, to check whether an MTN Mobile Money message is authentic or not, one of the first things you should do is to check the transaction ID.

MTN Mobile Money Messages Are Usually Free From Grammatical Errors And Have Same Formats

The messages you receive from MTN Mobile Money notifications are usually automated messages and so have the same outlook like any other one you may have received in the past.

The messages are usually free from grammatical errors as they’ve been pre-written by qualified professionals who have ensured up to 99.9% clarity and accuracy.

One common feature of fake mobile money messages is their trademark clueless grammatical errors spread all over.

Most of these fake messages do not sound professional and lack the grammatical beauty that comes with the original message.

So, in order to confirm the authenticity of such messages, you may compare it with any previous message you received from MTN Mobile money. If there is a difference, well, you’ve just saved yourself some stress.

MTN Ghana Only Calls You With 0244300000

MTN Ghana, just as any of the other network service providers in Ghana has a specified line for calling customers over queries, promotions or any other issues.

As such, any calls received from any foreign number aside 0244300000, claiming to be calling from MTN Ghana office is a fake call and shouldn’t be tolerated.

MTN Ghana can never call any customer with a private number or any other network’s number.

Your MTN MOMO Balance Should Be Equal To What’s In The SMS

Anytime you receive money from anywhere via MTN mobile money, your new balance should be the sum of your previous balance and the new amount received. This figure should be the same as what you see in the SMS notification received.

That’s to say, if you had 512.00 GHS in your account and you received 300GHS from someone, the available balance in your SMS notification should be 812.00 GHS. And when you check your mobile money balance via *170#, you should also get 812.00 GHS.

If the amount in your SMS notification differs from what you see in your account balance, you have just been saved from some hungry scammers.

    Conclusion

Do not give your password to anyone you do not trust. Do not transfer any money to anyone who calls you, indicating they have wrongly sent you some money until you can confirm that it’s true.

In today’s world of endless toil and troubles, the last thing you want to go through is a trauma associated with falling victim to a scam. Be safe and enjoy the fruit of your labour.

  • How to Get Free 50MB Data From MTN right now

How to Get Free 50MB Data From MTN right now

If you are an MTN subscriber, you probably have been enjoying some of the best data coverage. However, getting a free internet bundle these days seems impossible most especially when dealing with Ghana’s giant network provider, MTN.

Except for MTN subscribers on MTN’s Turbonet offer, normally prepaid subscribers pay a lot more for data. This is why anytime there is the chance to get free data from MTN, we have to take advantage of it.

Gone were the days where people used to get free FBT that aids them to get free data from the network providers. Today, those FBTs are no more working. The only way to get the free data bundle is to be dashed by them.

Recently, MTN Ghana has an issue with its fire optical cable and due to that their internet connectivity was affected. After successfully solving the issue, they deem it an honour to reward all their customers with a free 2GB data bundle which lasted for only two days.

Most people were unhappy about this data because it seemed MTN reduced the speed.

    Free data
