MTN Jara: What is it?

MTN Jara is an ongoing promotion by MTN Ghana that enables MTN customers in selected regions of the country to make unlimited calls to other MTN numbers for 24 hours at the cost of GHS 0.50. The promotion works in the Upper East, Upper West, Nothern, Volta, and Brong Ahafo Regions of Ghana.

How to Subscribe to MTN Jara in Ghana

Subscribing to the MTN Jara promotion is easy. All you have to do is dial the code *5055# and follow the prompts. The Jara is an auto-renewal promotion, therefore you will continue to be deducted 50 pesewas every day until you deactivate the service. If you activate the service while in any of the promotional zone regions (Upper East, Upper West, Nothern, Volta and Brong Ahafo), you can still make free unlimited calls to someone who is in the non-promotional regions (Ashanti, Western, Eastern, Central, Greater Accra).

The promotion automatically renews at 12 am each night if the subscriber has at least 50 pesewas of credit available on their line.

Why MTN Jara?

I feel MTN Ghana has introduced the Jara service in these 5 regions because residents of the regions do not make a lot of calls. In encouraging them to call each other, MTN can make some money as well as influence their mobile user behaviour. In the future, when the Jara promotion is over, residents will still need to make calls and they would be willing to pay more.

Information Worth Mentioning

But once there’s the chance that you can withdraw that airtime through Mobile MOney, it’s likely that when you buy airtime worth 10 cedis and you later need money, you can withdraw 9 Cedis out of that 10 cedis airtime. So, MTN loses 9 Cedis profit through this transaction alone.

Ideally, no business would want to put itself in a situation where they’ll keep making losses. And MTN will absolutely not put itself in such situations.

The Alternative Way To Change Airtime Into Cash

All hope isn’t lost yet. Even though MTN doesn’t allow you to directly convert your airtime into Mobile Money, you can still convert that money into cash or Mobile Money.

So, it’s simple. You just have to find someone who needs airtime at the time and transfer the airtime to them using the MTN Me2U service.

So, the person either pays you with cash or they can pay into your Mobile Money wallet upon receiving the airtime.

Secondly, since yours is a business account and your transaction limits are higher, it’s only right that you’ll get a higher volume of monthly transactions – which translates into higher commissions for you.

How To Register For a Business Account

To register for a business account, you need to follow the steps below:

1. Dial *5051# on your mobile phone
2. Select ‘Register’ from the list which pops up
3. Select your region of residence
4. Wait for a moment to receive an SMS confirming your registration. A reference number will be included in the SMS.
5. An MTN Mobile Money agent will be assigned to inspect your location
6. After successfully passing the inspection phase, you’ll need to download and fill the Merchant Recruitment form, the Merchant Account Holder Form and the Merchant Agreement form.

After going through all these processes successfully, you should be ready to use your MOMO Business Sim card now.

It should take roughly 3 days for it to be ready in most cases.

Whichever method you use, you’ll be required to pay a fee of GHS 0.65 which is the subscription fee. This amount recurs every month and is paid through your Mobile Money account.

How To Activate MTN Contact Backup Using The Sim Menu

To activate the service using the Sim menu, kindly follow the following steps on the phone and Sim card you want to activate the service on.

1. Go to your phone menu
2. Select Services
3. Select My MTN from the list
4. Select MTN Backup
5. Select ‘Synchronize’.
6. You’ll receive a notification that your MTN Sim Backup was successful.
7. Next, click on okay and wait patiently. You’ll see ‘Sending message’
8. Wait for a while. You’ll receive a payment confirmation request.
9. Enter your Mobile Money PIN.
10. Select 1 to finish the process.

How To Activate MTN Contact Backup Through Customercare

If you are unable to use the SIM menu for the activation, you can as well contact the MTN customer care for assistance on activating the service on your line.

Kindly follow the steps below:

1. Dial 100 on the MTN line you want to activate the service on
2. Select your prefered language
3. Press ‘5’ to speak to a customer care agent
4. Hold for a while and explain to them what you want.
5. You’ll be helped to get it activated.

After successfully, activating your MTN mobile contacts backup, you’ll keep receiving text messages anytime you add a new contact to your phonebook. MTN will automatically update your backup list and notify you via SMS.

Here are the steps to follow to retrieve your contacts:

1. Visit the contacts backup site
2. Login to your account with your phone number as the username and the password you used during your registration.
3. Look through the ‘devices’ session on your dashboard to determine when last there was a backup.
4. Select the device you wish to recover your contacts on. Make sure that the device you select matches with the exact phone you’re using now.
5. Click on ‘Sync now’ and you’ll receive a message indicating that the server is about performing synchronization.
6. Click on ‘continue’ to start the whole process.
7. When the recovery is complete, you’ll receive a message signalling that the process is done.
8. Finally, you’ll receive a text message informing you that your contacts have been restored.
